Ds 2.8 having antibiotics....Urgent advice needed please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In brief....Ds has had a horrid cough for 6mnths now...
I have always treated him with homeopathic remedies...he has never had any form of medicine, calpol etc.
On Wednesday I took him to the docs who thought it wise to give him a five day course of antibiotics as this cough has gone on so long.I hated the idea, but he is not improving at all,...so we started the amoxicillin yesterday.
In a day he has become floppy, miserable & has been very ,very sick twice. He also has the runs which is I guess the sorbitol (wretched stuff) in the antibiotics..
He also has a temp of 38.5
Should I stop them right now as he seems to be reacting so badly to them or ??????

Cant bear it...very & need some advice please.

Ds cried at the thought of being moved..& got almost hysterical. They are v.busy at the hospital & said that there would prob be a long wait....
So...I've made the decision to start the antibiotics again & see how he goes for the rest of the day...if he's not any better or worsens by tonight..I will take him to hospital.

Cannot believe they do not /will not come out to see poorly children

I can't believe with all the history (long term cough, young toddler, very high temp) they haven't come out. Could you ring NHS direct again? I wonder if they GP is advised to go out by NHS direct you might get more joy? Not what you should have to do of course but do you see what I mean?

Lullabunnyloo · 07/04/2007 13:18

called them again & another doc rang....talking about mild cystic fibrosis?????????????????
said policy was no house visits for children & to bring him for a chest xray & urine test.
said the cold air would do him good

my normally boisterous, cant stand still little boy cries at the idea of getting out of bed....reply from doc ...'oh well, children dont always know what's best for them.Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Ds has drunk a pear & banana smoothie, lots of water & just eating some tiny houmus sandwiches....so thats something.

temp still 104.

Ring them again and say that you NEED a home visit.

Get stroppy if you have to.

pooka · 07/04/2007 13:31

But if no joy then do go to the hospital. While they may be busy, they will triage and will ensure that you are seen asap. And given the gp has referred to need for x-ray and urine test, these are things that need to be done at hospital rather than at your home.
Don't leave it and see - bank holiday weekend (typical - mine always need docs at bank hlidays) so best to get seen now rather than having to go tomorrow, or on Monday.
Good luck.
Also I have recently read advice that warns against tepid bathing for temps because can aggravate problem. I know that the last thing I want when I have a fever is to get undressed and chilly. Not sure what the thinking is behind the shift, but a friend's dd had a febrile convulsion and the recommendation was to not do tepid sponging.

Lullabunnyloo · 07/04/2007 15:18

Ds is sleeping,am leaving things till tomorrow a.m-if no improvement will go to the hosp.

I got really ratty with the em doc...but it makes no difference..their policy is nohome visits.

oh dear.....

I bet if you went to a&e, with such a poorly child, with such a high temp, you would not have to wait, and you would be seen immediately

my instinct would be to go now

SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 07/04/2007 15:27

I think I would be thinking about the hospital, lully. If you are worried about him, take him.

pooka · 07/04/2007 15:28

I'd go when he wakes up. Start getting together now what you might need - drinks and maybe a buggy and so on. Any toys that may help distract him.
If you leave it until tomorrow chances are it would be just as busy and if I were you I would avoid another night of worry.

Lullabunnyloo · 07/04/2007 15:30

lulu....he's not well enough...dh is out so i'd have to get a cab etc....
I want to see if the antibiotics kick in at all overnight & if the temp goes down.

He's eating,drinking,passing urine,no more vomitting,chatting etc...so not desperately ill....just not right.

these threads are beginning to shock me- kids get sick - they do not need home visits or a and e when they are eating drinking talking

sorry but they dont

if you were all asked to pay the call out you would think twice

Lullabunnyloo · 07/04/2007 15:37

i'd willingly pay a call out fee for peace of mind.

OP posts:
GreenandBlackOtter · 07/04/2007 15:38

yeah?

you should go private though- these calls will be in excess of £150 before you start on drugs

paulaplumpbottom · 07/04/2007 15:39

I gave my dd antibiotics for the first time Saturday. The color was horrible. She spilt some and it actaully stained her skin yellow. No telling what that stuff does to her insides

SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 07/04/2007 15:39

green&blackotter:

To be fair, in one of the earlier posts, she did say that her son was floppy, unresponsive and blue.

I think that merits an ambulance, never mind an a & e visit or a home call from a doctor.

And in any event, my doctors have ALWAYS said that they would rather be called out to ten healthy children than miss the one that was really, really ill. (of course they may be just being polite)

You know when your child is not well, and on a bank holiday weekend when all conventional doctors surgeries are shut it can be very, very worrying.

Lullabunnyloo · 07/04/2007 15:41

i have never said he was blue

OP posts:
SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 07/04/2007 15:41

sorry, lully, my mistake. Didn't scroll down to check, just got a bit cross

GreenandBlackOtter · 07/04/2007 15:42

i had this a week ago

i need to audit emergency call outs an see just how many ARE emergencies

GreenandBlackOtter · 07/04/2007 15:42

it was MY child who was blue

paulaplumpbottom · 07/04/2007 15:43

How is he feeling Green&black?

SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 07/04/2007 15:44

So what do you do on a bank holiday weekend if your child is ill, but possibly not ill enough for a & e?

Do you just leave them for four days with your fingers crossed?

SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 07/04/2007 15:44

sorry, green&black otter, I missed your thread - how is he?

Lullabunnyloo · 07/04/2007 15:44

it's ok honey...just dont want this thread turning sour...am weepy and knackered enough as it is.

I feel home visits should be there for children, the elderly & vunerable

OP posts:
SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 07/04/2007 15:45

me too, lully - glad he's a bit better, anyway.

RustyBear · 07/04/2007 15:48

My sister nearly didn't take her son to hospital, despite a very high temp because he was eating & drinking.
Luckily, because she thought he 'didn't seem right' she took him - he had pneumonia.
