Experiences of moviprep / colonoscopy

My mother had bowel cancer in her 50s and I have had some symptoms which could be signs of, amongst many other things, bowel cancer. So I went to my GP and am booked in for a colonoscopy next Wednesday. I have read through the instructions given to me with the moviprep as well as googling it, and I'm dreading it. It lists nausea and vomiting as common side effects. Malaise and pyrexia ( fever - I had to google that one) as very common. I have to be up at the hospital about 40 mins drive away at 7.15 am so was planning to drive myself, but will I be in a fit state to drive the morning after taking the moviprep and after 24 hours fasting? I have to take the moviprep at 1 pm and 6 pm ( I think) on the day before. I feel queasy just thinking about it. Any tips?

Really anxious now. This time tomrrow will have started the prep

Fraxion · 20/06/2019 19:26

I meant Good luck @mrsed1987 earlier! Hope it goes okay for you. I've had Picolax in the past so kind of know what to expect re prep.

mrsed1987 · 20/06/2019 20:35

@fraxion thanks! Thats the bit thats making me anxious! Will i be someone that goes for a few hours and then is able to get some sleep? Or will i be running backwards and forwards to the toilet every 5 minutes for the whole night! Lol

shurrup · 20/06/2019 20:51

mrsed1987 and Fraxion

Like I said everyone's experience is going to be different but I was just the same. I had a terrible week thinking about what was coming. Really dreading drinking the 'vile' stuff. To my taste it really and truly wasn't vile. I won't say don't worry cos you probably still will but really it's not bad.
My colonoscopy was uncomfortable at certain points but it was a much longer investigation than normal and they found a much bigger than normal polyp that they mostly removed. He seemed convinced it was benign so fingers crossed pathology says the same but yes Fraxion waiting for the results isn't nice. I have to have the remaining bit taken out but won't be so worried next time.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. x

mrsed1987 · 20/06/2019 21:07

@shurrup thank you for your reassurance, i just want it to be saturday night already!

Fraxion · 20/06/2019 22:41

Fingers crossed for you @shurrup. When I had the Picolax the first time they gave me too much and I was up the whole bloody night. I had a barium enema that time. There was a big macho guy in front of me for the same thing and he came out about in tears, I was petrified as I had no clue what I was going in to. Turns out he was bit of a pussy because it was actually nothing at all. The worst part was the 2 hour drive home with my arse cheeks clenched just in case 😂

mrsed1987 · 21/06/2019 07:44

Well today is prep day. First dose at 7pm then second at 6am, as appointment is at 2.45pm tomorrow. Typically my LO was restless last night so ive had a crap nights sleep

shurrup · 21/06/2019 15:47

Good luck mrsed, hope you find the prep as easy as I did. #fingerscrossed

mrsed1987 · 21/06/2019 16:11

@shurrup thank you. Ive made it up and popped in the fridge. Typically my period has come and im starving!

shurrup · 21/06/2019 17:40

Good oh! I dipped my finger in to taste it lol. It tasted fine but wondered if a bigger gulp might taste different, it didn't.

You can message from the loo you know Grin

I'll be thinking of you. This time last week I started at 5pm - all over with now!

mrsed1987 · 21/06/2019 18:30

@shurrup Ill take you up on that offer. My LO has been crying for the last hour and a half so stressed me out even more. Do you think it would matter if i started before 7pm? Just wanna get it over with now

shurrup · 21/06/2019 19:12

No start when you want. I'm with you! x

shurrup · 21/06/2019 19:13

i'm a bit late! How's it going. Taste not bad? #fingerscrossed

mrsed1987 · 21/06/2019 19:15

@shurrup i statted at 6.45pm, what difference is 15 minutes going to make lol. Im 2.5 glasses down, taste was ok the first glass, bit of gagging after i gulped the second and the same so far with the 3rd.

Decided to come and perch on the loo as wasnt sure how much warning you actually get? Lol

mrsed1987 · 21/06/2019 19:17

But i am cold!! Im sure it makes it easier to drink but its a lot of cold liquid in one go lol

shurrup · 21/06/2019 19:25

You're doing great. I didn't gulp, you've got two hours to get it down. I used two straws, took a swig then a gulp of orange cordial but do what's best for you. You might get bum ache if you sit there the whole time. Have you got a chair you can put near and have a book, ipad, phone to amuse yourself lol.

Should start working soon Blush

shurrup · 21/06/2019 19:25

put a dressing gown on!

shurrup · 21/06/2019 19:28

you've got quite a big gap between your two doses. Mine was 5pm to 7pm then a 2 hour rest and start again at 9pm.

You may not find the 2nd litre more difficult with the big gap. x

mrsed1987 · 21/06/2019 19:50

Nothing yet. I guess i will have warning, to get to the loo? Just want it to start lol

shurrup · 21/06/2019 19:59

I started after about 45mins. My son had just text to say when does it start? I replied 'dunno' then got the urge lolol.
You don't get long to stay close. Not wearing underwear might help lol.
You managing with the taste?

mrsed1987 · 21/06/2019 20:01

Its started lol. Id just gone down stairs and had a cuddle with my little one and quickly rang back up here. Im hoping ill have it for a couple of hours and then can get some sleep! (Wishful thinking?)

shurrup · 21/06/2019 20:05

No you should be okay for a decent few hours.

Well done! Nearly there! x

shurrup · 21/06/2019 20:06

decent few hours SLEEP lol

mrsed1987 · 21/06/2019 20:09

I hope so!

fraxion · 21/06/2019 20:48

I'm dreading that moviprep stuff, at least with the Picolax once you drank the initial 'potion' you could just drink any clear liquid. Hope you get some sleep mrsed!
