Experiences of moviprep / colonoscopy

My mother had bowel cancer in her 50s and I have had some symptoms which could be signs of, amongst many other things, bowel cancer. So I went to my GP and am booked in for a colonoscopy next Wednesday. I have read through the instructions given to me with the moviprep as well as googling it, and I'm dreading it. It lists nausea and vomiting as common side effects. Malaise and pyrexia ( fever - I had to google that one) as very common. I have to be up at the hospital about 40 mins drive away at 7.15 am so was planning to drive myself, but will I be in a fit state to drive the morning after taking the moviprep and after 24 hours fasting? I have to take the moviprep at 1 pm and 6 pm ( I think) on the day before. I feel queasy just thinking about it. Any tips?

Definitely take the second dose . If you are not empty enough they may not be able to see what they need to

ShapelyBingoWing hope it goes OK for you to x

happyfrown · 01/08/2017 19:13

its best to be as empty as u can so they can get a good view (sounds gross lol) I had the throat camera on the same day so I had to fast and was only allowed water then no liquids 4hrs before appointment if I remember right. it was testing!
hope it all goes well Flowers

It needs to be clear-just like water!
I was still passing very small amounts when waiting in the Hospital-Nurses said this was normal and fine so long as its clear
Get it all drunk (smile)
Good Luck Bingowing

charliebear78 · 01/08/2017 19:36

Why can I never do the smilies?

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 01/08/2017 19:52

Big Vaseline-coated wave to shapelybingowing - how are you finding it? I'm getting through it slowly. I started at 6 pm and have now managed most of the second dose. The first one took me 3 hours because of the nausea. I don't feel so bad now but it tastes viler than ever. I find if you're feeling queasy, the last thing you want is a large volume of liquid in your stomach so I am spacing it out more. Wonder if we will sleep tonight. Good luck tomorrow.

DH has said he can drive me up tomorrow if I don't feel up to it and we'll just chuck the little ones ( 7 and 3) in the car in their PJs. I have to be there at 7.15.

Perhaps embarrassingly Mycar, I think I'm so used to chronic diarrhoea that this isn't that bad. I'm on my second lot of prep now and have a method that's making it go down easier...I have about a third of a glass of prep in big gulps through a wide straw then while the last mouthful is still in my mouth, bring a glass of ice cold cream soda to my mouth, swallow the prep and immediately take in the cream soda without letting any air into my mouth. Washes the taste off before my tastebuds really acknowledge it.

I feel like I swash about when I walk I've had so much fluid! I wouldn't normally drink this much over 2 days, never mind a few hours.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 01/08/2017 20:21

Sounds like you've got your strategy all worked out, shapelybingowing! I'm gulping it, a couple of gulps at a time followed by washing it down with herbal tea.
Does it stop you from feeling hungry too? The only time I started to feel hungry was in between the doses. Usually drinks with artificial sweeteners make me more hungry, so I wonder if there's some real sugar or something that can be metabolised in there (maybe the macrogol?)

I think it's full of dextrose. That said, I'm actually famished. I had a couple of boiled eggs this morning so was doing really well up until around 4. I get cold when I'm hungry and am absolutely freezing too!

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 01/08/2017 22:32

I had eggs too! I guess we're a bit limited for choice when they say eat a normal breakfast but no fruit, veg or cereals.
I've been through a couple of cold and shivery phases today. I'm wearing full length leggings and a fleece even though everyone else has been in Tshirts. Dug the hot water bottle out to take to bed tonight. I'll be going up very soon.

Several blankets here. I'm off to bed after I've had this last drink as I'm pretty energy devoid. And I need the extra layers in order to stay warm.

Good luck for tomorrow. My appointment is at 11:20 so I'll check in after I'm out the other end.

ShapelyBingoWing · 02/08/2017 10:48

Hopefully! I'm just sat in the waiting room for mine.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 02/08/2017 11:00

All over now and best of all, all clear. Smile I was awake throughout as I asked for just a low dose of sedative. Interesting watching my insides on a screen. Saw my appendix too!

About to enjoy my first meal in 27 hours...

Yikes! Reading with some interest (and horror) as I'm having a colonoscopy the day after I get back from holiday in a couple of weeks.
I was assuming I'd be ok to go to work the next day, does anyone know if that's the case?
