Have had low iron on and off for years. Currently got low ferretin, low folate and low b 12. Been prescribed tablets and while it helped, levels not improved much so been checked and have coeliac. Hair falling out unfortunately.

Is very common but often undiagnosed. I pushed for a test for Coeliac and was right it seems. Awaiting confirmation endoscopy. If your anaemia is ongoing and not improving then ask for a test.

Lagoonablue · 06/07/2014 10:01

Ferroglobin is Ok'd but not sure is as strong the tablets from docs.

If you are coeliac you just won't be absorbing enough no matter how much you take.

ballofworry · 06/07/2014 10:11

thanks , awaiting blood test results from doctors for ceeliac ...prodicting will be negative as iv heard thay can be ...and then they will just say its due to periods im sure , so wil then go to my gastro guy whom i saw few years ago i think see if he can shead some light ..

Yep Grin

Pollywallywinkles · 06/07/2014 17:40

It is a regular occurrence for me.

My GP said that I should keep taking iron until the ferritin level stabilises at around 50.

I get horrendous constipation from the supplements and tend to switch to liquid iron after a while and make sure that there are iron rich foods in my diet.

ballofworry · 07/07/2014 13:15

My hair is now coming out........feeling well pissed off. Don't have my gastro appt for weeks. I am taking all the iron tablets but nothing seems to be getting absorbed. I just want to start the GF. So I can feel better. How are you ball of worry?

gingeroots · 08/07/2014 09:34

Lagoonablue ,and others , that's really not on that you're feeling so bad .

There is such a thing as an iron transfusion ,maybe they won't give one until they are more sure of cause ,but could you go back to GP and stress how ill you are and ask for something other than tablets ?

What's a GF ? ( sorry ,you've probably explained up thread and I've missed it )

ballofworry · 08/07/2014 09:51

lagonablue hi there , whats your level ?

im feeling so tired so tearful today , had hour nap yesterday , today doing stuff round house but tempted to go back to bed ....
i got a print out of my recent blood tests and results for
" Anti-tissue transglutnase"
says some numbers , then negative , (next line ) more numbers weak postive , (next line ) more numbers positive

top of form says tell patient ok ..
.
i may be jumping to conclusions as im no doctor ....but i have heard you can be slightly gluten intolerant/or should i say sensativity with a negative result ...

iv made an appointment with my GP for next wednesday hopefully can explain my results
i also may get in touch with my gastro consultant privately and ask his advice ....
ibs for years but coiuld it be mild coeliac .....Hmm

Lagoonablue · 08/07/2014 12:21

Don't know my results just that all iron, b12 and folate low and doc says I have coeliac but need endo to confirm.

GothMummy · 08/07/2014 12:42

Its interesting that so many people think their anaemia could be related to gut disorders, I had no idea until recently that could be the case.
Im OK - ish, at work and struggling a bit as I would like to lie down on the floor!

Does low iron give the rest of you lowered immunity? As I seem to have been constantly ill for months, I pick up everything the kids have, and a whole load of fun extra bugs that only I seem to get, I have constant things like eye infections/stomach bugs/flu type symptoms and this morning woke up with a swollen gum! Really fed up. It seems like one thing after another. And this on top of really really heavy periods, and irregular bleeding. I just feel like crawling under my duvet and staying there.

ballofworry · 08/07/2014 16:31

yes low iron can cause lots of these things so i understand it , i have had mouth ulcers , sore throats , thrush at mo ...nice sorry (TMI) and yes from what i have read anemia is linked with gut problems . as bad absorbing .or it can be ...maybe mine is just because i to have heavy periods and i eat very little green vegies ....
my ibs made me go to docs as its got worse ...and i did look up coeliac and say iron as a symptom , along with hair thinning , tired ...so doc did tests for intolerances and my ferritin was flagged up as abnormal , my other results came back normal , but i have had a print out and not so sure ....

very tired right now , could head to bed now but i cant ....roll on 9 oclock then bed hear i come

DD is only 12 and has all the same - mouth ulcers, thinning hair, exhausted all the time. She can only take one iron tablet a day. She has been gluten and wheat free for a while which did seem to help (although she does not have coeliac). But she is very low at the minute. She eats very well and it is just always classed as unexplained anaemia. One thing I thought was interesting in a previous post was mention of a sore throat. DD complains about her throat a lot and I didn't know if it was linked. Vit D is low too and also mcv (???) something to do with red cell size, I think).

NickNacks · 08/07/2014 18:07

My red cells are a funny shape which apparently causes my anaemia.

GothMummy · 09/07/2014 00:35

Oh your poor daughter, nicky, thats utterly miserable to feel like that at only 12 years old.

gingeroots · 09/07/2014 08:30

That's awful NickNacks ,can't they do anything else to help her ?

nicky2512 · 09/07/2014 22:37

I know its not fair. And she is so good about it. She gets a bit tearful but she doesn't complain and she keeps going, even when she is exhausted. She has a gastroenterology appointment later this month (25th I think) and I'm going to try and push for more tests or something then. I'm scared that it will get worse as she grows up.

ballofworry · 10/07/2014 18:13

hows everyone feeling on the iron pills , ? think i am a tiny tiny bit better , havent had a nap for 2 days ..which is good for me .

OP posts:
Superworm · 10/07/2014 19:22

I have low iron and vitamin D levels and the GP started treatment for both yesterday. I also have coeliac disease and thought it was that making me so exhausted.

I have achieved nothing today and had a nap this afternoon as I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer!

Good to know I'm not alone Smile

ballofworry · 10/07/2014 21:37

its grim isnt it ... im seeing my GP next week hope to get some answers on why my iron ferritin stores so low , i have IBS tests for coeliac come back ok (blood tests )

eating spinach every day , red meats nuts seeds ...trying to give an extra boost ......

hope you start to improve soon ....x
