URGENT ADVICE NEEDED RE. SICK DD

Evita · 13/02/2004 21:08

Hi, am going to be v. quick as dd v. sick.

Ok, so she's had a fever for 3 days, but was coming down with something for a week. Dry cough at night thought it was probably croup which she's had before. Cough went, fever up to 40 so have been giving calpol and neurofen. She's clearly in a lot of pain as she's sort of half asleep but moaning constantly. Took her to the gp yesterday who said chest and ears were fine but throat v. inflamed and gave antibiotics. Since I started them yesterday she's had non-stop diarreah and has refused to eat or drink ANYTHING, I mean literally nothing, totally dry nappies now for 24 hours.

So, do I stop the antibiotics as they may be affecting her stomach? If I do am I putting her at risk with her throat? Or is she not eating and drinking because of her throat? She's v. unhappy and listless, hasn't walked a single step in 3 days, she either sits on my knee looking glazed or on the floor looking glazedly at the t.v. And she's finding it v. hard to sleep which is not like her, even when ill she usually zonks out.

And she's crying / moaning ALL the time. Also not like her.

Have phoned NHS direct they just say take her to gp but it's the weekend. Don't want to go to A&E unless absolutely necessary.

I am going to bed now Evita - but please get your dd seen by a doc - even if you disturb her, sureky it is better to get her checked out
especially if a 7 e say so - why not ring them back and ask what they suggest you should do if you can't get transport....??

nutcracker · 13/02/2004 22:08

The doc can't refuse to come out either, so if they do INSIST.

jmg · 13/02/2004 22:10

Evita
When a child is dangerously dehydrated then they go to sleep - the being asleep is a symptom of the dehydration - some of them never wake up. I don't want to scare you but TBH I can't imagine being in your sitiation and not taking her to A&E. You really must get her there NOW.

Evita it could take hours for the emergency doctor to come. If her nappy has been dry for so long she may need to be on a drip.

I would call a cab and get her to hospital immediately. Call first to ensure they accept babies at your local A&E. If you are in London Chelsea & Westminster have one.

Hope she is better soon xxx

Evita · 13/02/2004 22:14

Yep, we're off to A&E, she won't drink anything and I think her lips are looking too dry (got her asleep on my knee while dp gets things together). Found a cab co. which will take us with her in a carrier. Will let you know how we get on.

Thanks for all your help.
