URGENT ADVICE NEEDED RE. SICK DD

Hi, am going to be v. quick as dd v. sick.

Ok, so she's had a fever for 3 days, but was coming down with something for a week. Dry cough at night thought it was probably croup which she's had before. Cough went, fever up to 40 so have been giving calpol and neurofen. She's clearly in a lot of pain as she's sort of half asleep but moaning constantly. Took her to the gp yesterday who said chest and ears were fine but throat v. inflamed and gave antibiotics. Since I started them yesterday she's had non-stop diarreah and has refused to eat or drink ANYTHING, I mean literally nothing, totally dry nappies now for 24 hours.

So, do I stop the antibiotics as they may be affecting her stomach? If I do am I putting her at risk with her throat? Or is she not eating and drinking because of her throat? She's v. unhappy and listless, hasn't walked a single step in 3 days, she either sits on my knee looking glazed or on the floor looking glazedly at the t.v. And she's finding it v. hard to sleep which is not like her, even when ill she usually zonks out.

And she's crying / moaning ALL the time. Also not like her.

Have phoned NHS direct they just say take her to gp but it's the weekend. Don't want to go to A&E unless absolutely necessary.

I can't begin to tell you all how touched I am by your lovely messages of support, they made me weep! Mumsnet is such a wonderful network of fab moms, I'm very grateful to have 'met'.

Well, as suspected by me the antibiotics were affecting poor dd badly, dr said her tummy was v tender and she was a bit dehydrated so they rehydrated her, did blood tests etc (HATE THAT so does dd), and there's no horrible scary infection. She's clearly got a v. bad throat but chest and ears are ok and I think the antibiotics have just made her feel much worse rather than better. So we're home and I have to keep a close eye on her drinking. Dr. said don't bother about food, just get her to sip bits of water every 10-15 mins or so and that will be enough to keep her out of danger. So I've filled every recepticle in the place with water and will bug her incessantly with liquid all day. She's still extremely poorly, I've never seen her like this and she's been bad before. Usually she doesn't do this non stop waily cry like she's in pain. She's a poor little thing, they sort of 'regress' into being little sick creatures when they're really bad don't they?

Thanks again so much for your concern and I'm really sorry for any sleepless nights I've caused! It's such a trauma when they're v. ill isn't it?

Evita - glad things are looking a bit better. We had almost the exact same experience with ds, I know how scary it is. They do recover quickly though.

We found the best thing was very weak ribena. I know it's not good for teeth, but as an emergency measure it was really good, as ds would drink more of it than water.

Hope she's better soon!

Evita · 14/02/2004 11:22

Gosh, I think I'd give her just about anything to drink at the moment, teeth are the least of our worries!! Thanks, I'll try some ribena.

I'm off to get a bit of kip now myself while dd is flaked out on dp's chest (lucky dd ...). It's been a long night ...

Angeliz · 14/02/2004 12:19

Glad to hear she's o.k Evita

It's awful isn't it when they're poorly, you just feel on edge the whole time watching them. Hope she's better soon++++++

Evita · 14/02/2004 15:35

Yes, you do feel on edge. I don't know if it gets better with 2nd and 3rd ones. But for me, 1st timer with v. little experience of babies (virtually no extended family) I feel such a dork sometimes. I've tended all the time to worry incessantly about everything and had lots of self doubt all the time about the decisions I make. So I never really know if I'm worrying at the right moment, thus my indecision about what to do last night. dp thinks I worry much too much so I try to always take the angle of playing down my worries but in the case of last night I think I was right and you guys helped me make the right decision.

The responsibility you have over another (very precious) person's life is daunting isn't it? You simply can't fail and can't make mistakes.

have just read this thread - you definitely did the right thing Evita. Once my dd had a temp of 40.3 and I freaked out, phoned for an ambulance...it turned out that she had a viral infection which was really not too serious but little babies and children cannot regulate their own body temperature hence the fevers coming on so strong.Hope she is feeling better soon, have you got lots of diorylite for her to drink?

WideWebWitch · 14/02/2004 16:22

I'm glad she's OK evita. I was going to suggest ice lollies or ice cubes too. Hope you get some sleep this afternoon.

Lisa78 · 14/02/2004 17:31

glad she is getting better Evita

Don't worry about worrying IYSWIM - we all do it and its always better to check with a medic if you're at all concerned - you did the right thing, we here on MN say so

clairabelle · 14/02/2004 17:36

Glad to hear she's slightly better

mammya · 14/02/2004 21:02

Oh dear Evita, have just read this thread, no wonder you can't make the Tate tomorrow...

How is the little one today?

popsycal · 15/02/2004 10:02

hope she is feeling better
and that you are getting some rest too

fairydust · 15/02/2004 14:20

Hope your dd is a little better today.

just remeber it's ALWAYS best to be safe than sorry with little ones - don't ever feel a dork or feel silly about worrying them - i'm sure you'd rather someone tell you there's nothing to worry about rather than something bad happening.

Hope you all manAge to get a bit more sleep
