Has anyone had a neurectomy?

Hi, I'm booked in for a foot neurectomy and have been told it will be very painful... I'd be really grateful to hear anyone else's experiences as it's come along quickly and I'm nervous!

Footle I can understand why you're worried. You do need to feel confident with the surgeon involved. I was quite scared just before I had my op but was reassured by the fact my surgeon had done a lot of neurectomies and a very kind nursing team.

I don't know where you live but can Pm details of my surgeon if you would like.

I'm glad you hijacked as it's really good to hear from you, and I'll check your thread as that's exactly what I need to read thanks (mine's a Morton's neuroma too). Sorry you've got two of them Footle.

Mine's in a couple of weeks too. Have you had your pre-op assessment/discussion? What have they told you? My surgeon does lots of them he says, but he also said that they are more complicated than a bunion op as it's different tissue and sort of less obvious :/ However he said that he has a great success rate.

Thanks so much for referring me to your thread, orangeflutie, it was exactly what I needed to read. I've never met anyone else who's had this (apart from a woman on the ward who was having surgery when I had my steroid injection). Interesting to read that others have had a bad reaction to the steroid injection too - when I told the doctor this the reaction seemed to be that it's usually very good at improving things! They nearly put more in when they did an anaesthetic recently, and it was only because I'd spotted 'steroid' on my notes that I could beg them not to do it again!

Footle, how much time are you allocating to recovery, out of interest?

FeetStreet Happy to have helped and over a year on I've got a tiny scar and am back running. I definitely think the operation is worth having and I hope yours goes well.

Footle I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name surgeons publicly. I'll PM the details but appreciate that you live in the NW. I live in the SE:) so depends how far you want to travel.

Thanks orange, I hope so too! It'd be wonderful to be able to run comfortably - I've had this for 9 years now so I just can't imagine it!

Oh that's interesting footle. The surgeon and nurses said that I was to lie down in bed for two weeks, only getting up to go to the loo (and I will be having showers with the aid of a 'Limbo' dressing cover as I really can't bear the thought of going without for any amount of time).

They said you shouldn't even make your own food, as your foot would swell up too much and it would hamper the healing. I came home and told dh this and I'm pretty certain he thought I must be swinging the lead! It's going to be very odd as I've been looking after the children all day every day for the last five years next month, and it sounds like I'm going to be unable to do that at all.

Do you have someone to look after you? They said that you could be driving after three weeks, but it will be painful. I'm going to have to be up and running hobbling at the start of September but the nurse thought that sounded ok.

Footle, I do too! It's nice to go through it with someone, especially as it seems that most people don't know what a neuroma is and it's a bore to talk about it too much to non-sufferers...

My op is on the 8th August. I went in for a hypothetical chat about next steps (imagining something next year) last Wednesday, and left the hospital with an appointment in two weeks' time! The surgeon just walked into the room while I was talking to the podiatrist, and said "Why are you thinking of next year? Want it now?". So I'm still adjusting to the idea!

It's really useful advice you've given, thank you. I've heard that bunion surgery is excruciating, so I hope this won't be as bad for you, and sorry if I've put the frighteners on you unnecessarily. And you're well prepared with foot shielding techniques

Good to hear that the Limbo its job. I haven't received mine through the post yet, so I hope it fits as it's a bit late if not! Thanks. Its been jolly painful the day after running for ages. Got worse and finally went to gp. Scan appt took a month to arrange, xray was same week. Hope to get an answer now as missing the running...

Yes it did but carried on with ibruprofen for a while. Have had to give up heels/ non cushioned flats. Only wearing trainers or hotter sandals at the moment and no running :(

Had scan. Maybe swelling on tendon rather than nerve, possibly bursitis? Will have to go back to gp for results propper...

The feeling of walking on large lump that isn't there is it exactly. Problem seems to stem from between second/third toes and is worse after activity. Been rubbing on ibruprofen for a while, but not that effective now. Have had click when riding bike which may come from foot...
