Has anyone else had a BRACE fitted as an adult???????

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 12:52

I am due to go to orthodontist this afternoon and I am getting soooooooooo nervous which is stupid

I was going to have it done 4 years ago but chickened out as I will have to have a tooth taken out

I had braces for years as a teenager and had loads of teeth taken out then

But to get them straight I will have to have a side one taken out

I am nervous because I started the treatment 4 years ago and then cancelled it and said I couldn't afford it but really it was just me being stupid

DH is coming with me as moral support

btw I am not afraid of dentists I am embarressed that I cancelled it 4 years ago really BlushBlush

How many others have had adult braces?

.

Sorry Kanga have had no experience of this but just wanted to say good luck, and aren't you brave for having it done!

fairyjay · 01/03/2006 13:00

When I lived in Germany - admittedly many years ago - it seemed to be the 'in thing' for adults.

Good luck to you!

starlover · 01/03/2006 13:08

i haven't had it done but am considering it!

please keep us updated on how it goes...

if you don't mind me asking, how much is it costing you?

Feistybird · 01/03/2006 13:11

A good friend of mine (early 30's)is due to have hers removed this year after 3 years, all because one tooth at the front was very sticky-outy.

She doesn't regret it at all - was a bit uncomfortable at times, esp when the dentist had to alter it every so often and she did get a bit fed up with the hygiene side of it until it became routine.

She does look good tho.

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 13:32

I had braces recently
They were on for 18 mths total
Really pleased I had it done and wish I'd done it sooner

Good luck

Blondeinlondon · 01/03/2006 13:36

Oh mine cost 3K

starlover · 01/03/2006 13:38

bil did you have metal ones or those invisible ones?

Blondeinlondon · 01/03/2006 13:48

metal wires but the plastic things they stick on your teeth were clear

I was more aware of them than other people
Once I had them I spotted lots of other folk with them on in my office

I had train tracks as a teenager... but the orthodontist removed them too soon and my teeth reverted back to how they were! argh

have lived with horrible teeth for far too long and would love nice straight ones! not sure i can afford that much though

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 17:21

Well guys I am back

He didn't actually do anything today and so am going back on 20th April for X rays and impressions etc.

The bad news is that he wants to do top and bottom and to take out 3 teeth SadSad

One of my upper cannines is still in my gum and so will have to have sedation or GA ShockSad

He said last time he was quoting me £1300 and now having the bottom done too it would be about £2000

This is for the clear squares + wire iyswim

i have a track on my lower teeth which are really bright blue and i quite like them now had them for a year and will be taken out in about 2/3 months and i cant wait.

I am so glad that i had them put on even if i did have a gap at the front for months and i think they were worth every penny.

misdee · 01/03/2006 17:39

i want my teeth redone, i had traintracks between the ages of 16-18, and then had a removable retainer for 6months. my teeth havent kept position, and i am unhappy with them. Once we get sorted out with peter being well, then i think i will have the braces re-fitted. i am very paranoid about my teeth, always have been.

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 17:40

WOW so do you think having them bright blue helps with your confidence

sort of a fashion statement

OP posts:
misdee · 01/03/2006 17:42

i could chose the colours of the little bands if the orthodontist was feeling genourous.

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 19:09

Yeah i think it has, have had so many colours on them, all purple, all red, then red and blue, orange and now sticking to blue. Was quite gutted when i couldnt pick on one appointment, didnt like the clear plastic bit that turned a funny green colour when i ate curry.

Ps. I am almost 28.

starlover · 01/03/2006 19:10

misdee... i feel exactly the same! and all that faff while I was a teenager was for nothing as my teeth just went back to how they were!

rtkm... yours is cheaper than blondeinlondon!!! 2k is still quite a lot though isn't it?
Hmmmm... i shall have to do some saving up I think!

I would LOVE pink braces!!!!!

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 19:16

I couldnt find a nice pink, it was all too fuschia? Mine cost 1600/1800 i think.

starlover · 01/03/2006 19:17

fuschia? EXCELLENT!!!

spacecadet · 01/03/2006 19:21

kanga-i had braces, fixed top and bottom between the ages of 18 and 20.the plates themselves are a bit of a pain to clean round, they recommend you get a small head toothbrush. once every six weeks you get the wires tightened and i personally used to be in pain for 24 hours afterwards.
once the brace was removed, i wore a retainer for a further year and have been really pleased with the result.Smile
it was worth it!

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 19:24

Thanks for all the input Smile

I may ask for coloured squares or do you mean something different??????

OP posts:
spacecadet · 01/03/2006 19:26

when i had my brace you couldnt have coloured squares, they introduced them after mine was removed, would have loved funky cloured squaresSmile

starlover · 01/03/2006 19:26

sc... how much did yours cost?

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 19:27

so do they take the squares off and put new ones on

or do they stay on for the whole time?????
