I am due to go to orthodontist this afternoon and I am getting soooooooooo nervous which is stupid

I was going to have it done 4 years ago but chickened out as I will have to have a tooth taken out

I had braces for years as a teenager and had loads of teeth taken out then

But to get them straight I will have to have a side one taken out

I am nervous because I started the treatment 4 years ago and then cancelled it and said I couldn't afford it but really it was just me being stupid

DH is coming with me as moral support

btw I am not afraid of dentists I am embarressed that I cancelled it 4 years ago really BlushBlush

How many others have had adult braces?

How do the squares come off?

OP posts:
misdee · 01/03/2006 19:30

they squares stay on, they are cemented to the teeth. then they connect the wires to the sqaures with little bands IIRC. the clear ones go a funny colour if you eat curry lol.

starlover · 01/03/2006 19:33

they stay on the whole time...
afterwards they hack them off and then drill the glue off... i still have glue on some of my teeth Angry

chicagomum · 01/03/2006 19:36

Starlover, if you still have glue on your teeth ask your dentist to polish it off (its v.easy to do).

Can I ask for your advice, my dentist has said that once my gum disease is under control I can have my teeth capped where they have seperated, but I am really not keen on that idea, is it possible to have a brace to fix my teeth as They are still a bit sticky out anyway as I never wore my retainer when I had my brace removed in my teens. Logic tells me a brace would be out of the question with gum disease, but I ,ight be wrongSmile

spacecadet · 01/03/2006 19:52

starlover-I avoided having to pay as id been on the orthodontic waiting list since i was 15!!! the orthodontist kindly backdated the first treatment form as id only just turned 18, i was told though that it would have been 800, but that was 15 years ago!

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 19:53

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 19:56

I know I am being reqally dim

If I have squares made of plastic or ceramic {which ones are coloured by curry?}

They are cemented on and then each time I go I have new coloured things on

Is that correct?

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 19:57

I work in the orthodontic department of a dental school. We have had a great increase,in the number of adult patients we treat,in the last few years.
There all kinds of coloured bands available these days.
If you are starting orthodontic treatment it is a big commitment, you really need to be sure it's what you want before you start. As someone said oral hygine is very important,if you don't keep your teeth and braces, very, very clean your gums will go puffy and your orthodontist may be forced to remove your braces, before your treatment is complete.
Another thing is that once the treatment with the fixed braces is complete,it is very important that you wear your removable retainers, otherwise your teeth will go back to where they were, and all that money and effort will be for nothing.

Starlover, if you live near a dental school that trains othodontists, perhaps you could get your dentist to refere you then the treatment would be free, but you may have to wait on their waitng list for a while.

RTKangaMummy · 01/03/2006 19:59

He was talking about having a permenant wire behind my teeth to keep them in place afterwards

I wish I didn't have to have the canine one that is inside my gums taken out

You can't see it, I thought it had been taken out years ago

OP posts:
jac34 · 01/03/2006 20:07

Yes,thats pretty common with adult patients.
Good luck, treatment sometimes results in pretty dramatic improvements in peoples appearance, it depends how bad your teeth are to start with.

starlover · 01/03/2006 20:07

hmmm well i am taking ds to the dentist tomorrow... i might ask them while i am there!

spacecadet · 01/03/2006 20:08

its the wires that attatch to the plates that go a funny colour if they are clear.
i was really lucky to get it for freeSmile

jac34 · 01/03/2006 20:10

The canine tooth may be in the way.It may stop him moveing the root of another tooth where he wants it.Even though you can't see it.

chicagomum · 01/03/2006 20:11

I would guess he wants to remove the canine as it will prevent movement of other teeth.

chicagomum · 01/03/2006 20:12

oops jac34 got there before me.

chicagomum · 01/03/2006 20:16

Tricky one to answer waterfalls as I am a "general" dentist so have basic training in orthodontics but not specialised in the subject, plus it would be difficult to comment without seeing the condition of your gums and wether it had caused deterioration of the bone support and mobility of your teeth. I would seriously consider discussing the possibility of braces with your dentist as an alternative to crowns and see what they think (or poss ask for a consultation with an orthodontist).

schnapps · 01/03/2006 20:43

Has anyone tried these \link{http://www.mynewsmile.com/invisiblebraces.htm\invisible braces}? I bet they're very expensive though, and I don't know they're available in the UK.

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 21:35

Have seen invisable braces twice as much money so i couldnt afford it.

My teeth have little tiny squares that are cemented on and it has a little set of teeth and then a wire and sometimes depending on your treatment a little clear plastic runner that goes from front to back to stop it rubbing on your gums because that can really hurt.

If they need to be removed to realign the teeth(mine just have been done) then they scrap it off and re cement the bits. My teeth are always sensitive for 48 hours after so i now take killers just before and eat lots of chocolate.

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 21:36

Forgot to add that i will always have a wire behind my front bottom teeth as that was where i had my tooth taken from.

And yes i clicked on the link and in my orthodontics they were twice as much.

Blondeinlondon · 01/03/2006 21:52

RTKangaMummy - I have a permanent wire behind my teeth to keep them all in place. Bit of a pain for brushing but less annoying than the full brace

pipsqueak · 01/03/2006 22:09

I had a brace fitted when i was 42! about a month after having dd2 on the basis that i would get a good way down the line with the treatment before going back to work. The brace was on for about 15 months and wasn't too painful. It just hurt a bit after it was adjusted every couple of weeks. also i got sore inside my mouth where it rubbed but just used some of dd2s teething gel! I had the ceramic white little square things which looked ok to start with but did go a murky sort of yellow fairly quickly and not look good but then again i did eat a fair amount of curry and smoke (said shamefully). if you do either of these things i would probably have the metal things and save the cash! I have just had 2 implants put in where the gaps were left -this was much worse than the brace /orthodontic work . I now have a wire behind the teeth to stop them moving again. Its cost a bomb but I am plesed that I did it and just a bit cross with myself for not doing it before and going all through my 20s and 30s without smiling properly ! I would go for it RT KangaMummy
