broken foot

i slipped and landed on my r foot. Went to a&e and its broken.
i cant drive with the cast on and DD is only 12! my parents live over 50 miles away.
i am on crutches and in lots of pain! i go to see the consultant at fracture clinic on monday.
teaches me a lesson for being so dam clumsy i cant help being clumsy!!!

it happened yesterday out shopping. got to car and drove there but had to leave car in hozzy car park dunno when i will be able to collect it
mum phoned is coming to stay! she cant get it as she cant drive

Do you have a neighbour or friend who could collect it for you?

I'd also phone the hospital and ask about what will happen about parking charges (if they charge)

mrs my neighbour has offered to collect it for me. hopefully i wont have a problem with parking as i paid for a 24 hour ticket.

phoned hospital and they will let me pay my charge on monday.
how did u shower/ bath/wash hair/cook basically evreything!

As someone who has broken bones in both my feet i can reassure you they do heal very fast (quicker than other bones like if you break your wrist) & you will be hobbling around again soon. it is frustrating though.

Reassuring to know they heal fast - i broke wrist a few years ago that seemed to take forever to heal!!

when I had a broken foot (ankle + metatarsal) I didn't have a cast, only a moonboot, so could take it off for having a shower. I had dh buy a cheap stool for the shower, so I could sit down in it. in my case it was a bad break and took ages to feel normal again, but could walk with a stick after 3 weeks which is great because you get a seat on the bus

at the moment, im in a cast. am washing hair by leaning over the sink and bathing by putting carrier bags over the cast. i saw the consultant today and its a fairly bad break - metartarsal is cracked in 3 places owww!!!

You'll need a Limbo (google it) for bath/showering. Last year I was in cast to repair ruptured Archilies Tendon for 8 weeks. The Limbo is the best invention for someone in a cast and mine was under £10. Hope you heal fast.

I thought I was the only clumsy person to break bones in both their feet cravingcake. Mine were UDI's, a few years apart. Snapped metatarsals falling off platform shoes .

I broke the bottom of my tibia and fibula last year, and also dislocated my ankle (ouch) - not good, as well as spraining the other ankle at the same time I was also in a cast for 6 weeks and was assessed by the Occupational Therapist at the hospital to see what equipment I needed.

I had a bath chair which they came out and fitted. Before that I put my hair over the bath and ds1 (15 at the time) washed my hair for me. I also had a strip wash every day. it was great when I got my seat after 2 weeks and could shower, but absolute bliss when they removed the cast after 6 weeks and I could finally have a bath!

My MIL let me her automatic after 3 weeks when I was allowed to put weight on it and had a special walking shoe. It was lovely to get out of the house. I felt as though I had been in prison or something as I didn't leave the house for 3 weeks apart from hospital visits.

If you live anywhere near me I'd be happy to help you out as I know how difficult it is. I live in Sheffield.

I also did all my supermarket shopping online.

I used Waitrose. They tend to give you fresh stuff with a long use by date. They also send you a text telling you when they are going to arrive which is really helpful. I paid for 6 months worth of deliveries in advance which was £15, but that just covered Tues-Thurs. I think if you spend more than £50 they deliver for free.

Have you got any friends nearby who could help out? - I'm afraid York's a bit too far for me to help out .

I found I slept loads at first. The painkillers knocked me out, and getting out on crutches and going backwards up the stairs on my bum were knackering. Our house is especially not designed for people with mobility problems.

well, i ordered some shopping last night. arrived today (waitrose!)
seem to be sleeping loads and loads. now have a limbo & bath chair so am clean again!

Feeling clean is great when you haven't been able to shower yourself for a few days. I was in hospital for 7 days, so only had bed baths in that time and no hair washing which was really crap. And I had to wait 2 weeks for my bath chair. At was amazing to feel warm running water on my skin.

I also slept loads. Got up around 1, had a wash and got dressed. Went downstairs. Whole process took about an hour. Rest for 10 mins. Get some food and a drink. Eat in kitchen. Back to living room. Sleep again on sofa. Toilet. Sleep. Drink. TV. etc

There didn't seem to be much time to do anything else anyway other than sleep and spend at least twice as long doing everyday tasks.

Your DD is 12, so she's of an age where she can help you. Not sure how long metatarsals take to heal, but as it's quite a small bone am hoping for your sake it's not too long, and that they can soon give you a walking boot (which are ace!)

i wasnt admitted! they say 6wks in a cast then 4wks in a walking boot, i am sleeping till 1 or later eat,tv,mn,tv,mn,eat,bed! my day at the moment! DD is making all meals and helping me around the house so i am lucky!

am going to sis this wk/end as niece in hospital. we r going on the train - wonder how i will cope??!??
saw dr @ clinic today, did a re xray seems to be getting a bit better though. they may put me in a walking boot in 5wks so this could be over sooner than they originally thought!

I really sympathise. Broke 4th metatarsal last May. My best tip is I asked for a chair to be put in my (small) kitchen. I knelt my leg with the broken foot on that then swivelled - sorry, difficult to explain. It meant I had 2 arms to cook, wash up with etc. Imagine standing up but with one knee on a chair! I had a thermos mug with a lid and the other thing I learnt to do is wear a cross the shoulder bag which I could put a book, a snack etc in and I could still use the crutches. Hope this helps. Couldn't drive for 5 weeks. Bought shoes from the 'Hotter' website when out of the cast and walking boot. Not trendy but comfy! Got a v good relationship with local taxi firm and only had 1 week off work. Good luck.

Sympathise with the broken foot - I broke my foot last autumn and I don't know how! Woke up one morning with a sore foot - 3 weeks later I found out it was broken. 6 weeks of a moon boot and then 2 months of flat shoes has more or less sorted it out. Am wearing heels again, although not every day and the foot is getting back to normal. No time off work though - went wrong somewhere!

a shoulder bag!?!? will buy one of them. tess i am off work as i work in a school so i cant do lessons and marking etc...

Hope it is all going OK - for me the moonboot meant I didn't need crutches which is why I was able to teach continuosly - only thing i got out of was playground duty! Hope it is all healing OK.

they have sent me for tests, they think i might have calcium deficency and brittle bones.
They are going to put me in a moon boot in about a month. then i will be back to work, am just enjoying the time off at the minute! its so relaxing!!

does anyone on here have calcium deficiency/ brittle bones?? I am going for tests on Friday. Fingers crossed that i am just clumsy!

I didn't have tests, but it was suspected as I had broken ribs following a coughing fit before I broke my foot. am on high dose vit d3 since then.
