Pneumonia-anyone ever had it?

I became very ill almost overnight with a fever, chills, etc and a hacking cough last thurs, after 24 hours i was feeling worse with an agonising backache, as an ex-nurse i suspected i had pnuemonia but couldnt get an on call gp to come out! eventually one cameon NYD and confirmed it and put me on anti-biotics, i saw my usual gp yesterday who said i def had it and would need to go for a chest x-ray in a week, he told me to go home and rest as much as poss, but i have 4 children, dh only had 3 days off over christmas and went back to work on NYD, so ive been managing on my own, but i feel exhausted, every breath is agony, ive still got a temp etc, has anyone else ever had it? if so , how long was it before you felt better? im not sure why i got it in the first place but i have been very low since losing a baby girl at 23 weeks in oct and picked up several virus;s since then which i found hard to shake off, im guessing that must have lowered my immunity.

if you have trouble breathing, please call an ambulance!

space, i'm hoping they keep you in - you REALLY need to be in hospital to get the rest you need to recover.

MarsLady · 08/01/2006 15:38

space cadet haven't read all the threads but get the gist. Had pnu myself when dds were 2 and 4. Took several months to get better - after it was finally diaganosed! Took a long time to forgive my husband - not only did he carry on working, he did overtime too. Taking dd1 to nursery in the morning was a all morning job. Luckily had a friend who took dds a couple of afternoons a week. When you get to hospital STAY THERE! get well soon.

PrincessPeaHead · 08/01/2006 16:27

spacey if you are getting sharp pains it sounds like you are developing pleurisy - PLEASE go to hospital as soon as possible. call an ambulance if necessary and get neighbours to take DDs...

spacecadet · 08/01/2006 16:38

All the best spacey.

In the nicest possible way - I hope we don't see you on here later on!!

charliecat · 08/01/2006 17:22

You must go as soon as he gets in SC. That pain is explained here
Feel so sorry for you.

puff · 08/01/2006 17:24

sc, I hope you are admitted, because it sounds like it's the only way you will get a chance to recover properly.

Can you also have a quiet word with a doctor in A&E, asking them to ensure your dh realises the seriousness of your illness?

My friend was in hospital for 10 days recently with pneumonia, she was very very ill indeed and 2 months later is still not back at work.

mummytosteven · 08/01/2006 17:24

best of luck!

Piffle · 09/01/2006 14:40

Hopefully SC is being looked after "inside"
Anyone know her at all? where she is likely to be maybe we could send flowers?

mummytosteven · 09/01/2006 14:45

piffle - there is another thread here in Health started by SC's husband this morning - she has been admitted! not sure where - just know it's not Addenbrookes!
