Pneumonia-anyone ever had it?

I became very ill almost overnight with a fever, chills, etc and a hacking cough last thurs, after 24 hours i was feeling worse with an agonising backache, as an ex-nurse i suspected i had pnuemonia but couldnt get an on call gp to come out! eventually one cameon NYD and confirmed it and put me on anti-biotics, i saw my usual gp yesterday who said i def had it and would need to go for a chest x-ray in a week, he told me to go home and rest as much as poss, but i have 4 children, dh only had 3 days off over christmas and went back to work on NYD, so ive been managing on my own, but i feel exhausted, every breath is agony, ive still got a temp etc, has anyone else ever had it? if so , how long was it before you felt better? im not sure why i got it in the first place but i have been very low since losing a baby girl at 23 weeks in oct and picked up several virus;s since then which i found hard to shake off, im guessing that must have lowered my immunity.

tis true SC, dd (3) had viral pneumonia (not as serious than what you have I think and not pneumococcal like I had)
The doc said that diff between pleurisy/bronchitis and pneumonia is the difference between a crackle and a rattle sound in the lungs.
We were also rold with dd that she would be more tired for anything up to 13 weeks following the virus and a cough could linger for 2-3 mths too...
thankfully she is back to normal but still tires very easily.
If you are through your AB's for 3 days or more and you still have chest pain, you are not seeing the recovery you are expected to.
Hope you're ok, your situation sounds so terrible.

spacecadet · 06/01/2006 22:58

dh agreed to take me to casualty tomorrow, if in his words, i still dont feel right, ha, i doubt i will makr a miracle recovery overnight!
by tomorrow i will have only one more day on my abs, so they may give me some diff ones, am dreading going though, as havent left the house for a week and can only just manage pottering round the house.

Plead with them to admit you. Now go to bed

spacecadet · 07/01/2006 15:21

well, went to casualty this mor ning, and was seen quite quickly. had a chest x-ray which confirmed pnuemonia and an ecg. heartrate is a bit tachycardic but the doctor said he thought that i was actually over the worst and said, had i arrived at casualty a week ago,i would have been admitted, he said they had seen quite a few cases of pnuemonia and suspected that i had bronchial pnuemonia, or "community based", he said it wasnt as severe as other types, but was very important to rest and allow myself to recover, my sats were a little low 96, but he said he wasnt concerned. overall he said that the fact that my temp was returning to normal and that when i coughed when he listened to my lungs, my breath sounds improved slightly, he was confident that i could go home and recover.he has put me on a diff anti-biotic and is arranging for a follow up chest x-ray appt to be sent to me.
so im home now and im taking it as easy as poss, dh is still refusing to take tomorrow off work, but never mind, he will just return home to a messy house and no dinner!

I mean it, you saved him a fortune battling on when he should have been at ghome looking after his children, I think you should spend a lot of it making your life easier. I would be tempted to have takeaway for lunch too, out of spite.

expatinscotland · 07/01/2006 18:50

he's lucky he's got you, cuz i'd have used his bloody card to hire a nanny for a week. a night one as well.

in addition to ordering takeout and doing all shopping online.

tegan · 07/01/2006 19:46

Dh had it about 5 years ago. He spent 8 weeks in hospital having his lungs drained everyday and was off work for 6 months in total.

spacecadet · 07/01/2006 19:54

oh dont worry expat, he will pay in one way or the other.
i have spent most of the day on MN, doing little else and he has done nothing but moan and complain.
i have decided to go deaf.

Space
This is EXACTLY what happened to me! I felt better, and really took advantage of that. Then I coughed all night and felt wretched the next day. My ex-husband forced me to A&E, where I was immediately admitted.

PLEASE go to hospital. No more fooling about.

Honestly, the doctor gave me a right dressing down when I got htere - well deserved - and told me I could either stay there or go home and die, b/c that was what was going to happen if I didn't let them sort me out.

DON'T MESS with this!

spacecadet · 08/01/2006 15:04

i have given in gracefully, i phoned dh at work and said i cant go on, my temp is up again and i cant stop coughing, every breath i take hurts, if i take a deep breath, my lungs feel raw and i get a terrible pain on my left side, i told dh to take me to hospital when he gets home, he can drop me off there and go home with the dcs, i will call him when i know whats going on. ive packed a bag in case i have to stay in, i hate hospitals, nurses dont make good patients! but im half hoping they will say i have to stay in, i just want to get better.

mummytosteven · 08/01/2006 15:17

have to say I hope they keep you in, as it's the only chance you'll get 1)of any rest! and 2)of your H taking your health a bit more seriously hope you feel better soon xxx
