What did you do? Tie it with thread and wait for it to drop off?

Figgyrolls · 08/03/2011 20:20

are you flipping bonkers? now I want to know how you did it and will watch with interest!

edwardsbella · 08/03/2011 20:32

cotton/floss hurts like buggery.

go to the docs and get them to slice them off.

Ooopsadaisy · 08/03/2011 20:35

I had a few skin tags on my shoulder years ago.

I went to the GP because I wanted to check they weren't dodgy.

She checked them and tied them for me. They went dark coloured (as you describe) and hard and then just dropped off. Nothing there now except a slightly darker spot on the skin.

They weren't sore though. Hmm

RenniesFromHeaven · 08/03/2011 20:43

Docs did mine - had about 20 removed from neck. Valium will tell you - I looked like a vampire attack victim just after but very sterile and clean.

Unlike tying it up with thread and giving yourself blood poisoning! Well worth the embarassment of booking an appointment I should say!

RenniesFromHeaven · 08/03/2011 20:44

(Sorry, to add)

Doc injected the stem of each one with local, then sliced off with a cautery.

olivertulliver · 08/03/2011 21:02

I had one near my bikini line, that started off as an ingrown hair then mutated into a huge skintag!

I did a DIY job on it by tying cotton around it. 24 hrs later it was so sore! I had visions of going to my GP with this bloody cotton tied around it!

Thankfully, 24 hours after that it fell off! No scar either.

edwardsbella · 08/03/2011 21:03

dr jessen did it on embarassing bodies - feck it hurts ,maybe i should try to get the cotton off?

You mean, like with scissors??

This is going to get gory, folks!

edwardsbella · 08/03/2011 21:05

piratecat · 08/03/2011 21:06

you might have put it too close to the skin, tho i know it's hard to judge, becuase when you tie it thats it.

take a paracetamol and see what it's like tomorrow.

edwardsbella · 08/03/2011 21:10

yes will wait and see what it looks like in the morning

I cut mine off my neck with nail clippers. Fuck my old boots it hurt. Worth it though! PS, I did clean them with surgical spirit beforehand.

RenniesFromHeaven · 08/03/2011 21:30

Nail. Clippers.

I'm going to have to go away and think about that for a while.

Don't know whether to bow down in awe or run screaming for the trees.

Probably the trees. Do you have a chainsaw, Grumpy? That might decide me.

Grumpystiltskin · 08/03/2011 21:31

Well, the thing was, it was just under my jaw bone and I couldn't see it well enough to tie off, DH gets squeamish brushing his teeth so he's no help but it's healed a treat. And yes I do Wink

RenniesFromHeaven · 08/03/2011 21:34

Crikey. Well. That's beaten last week's tale of colleague self-removing a kidney stent hands down.

runs

budgieshell · 08/03/2011 21:36

I'm so glad to hear some one else used nail clippers. I've done this a few times but only on really small ones before they get to big.

Don't like the idea of going to docs with something so tivial.

shodatin · 08/03/2011 23:53

I recently got rid of an obstinate wart by applying aspirin powder, useing antiseptic cream to hold it in place, then a dressing, and am going to try the same system with skin tags.

Am not brave enough to try anything else mentioned, but I wonder if it would help to use some freezing gel like Voltarol or Ibuprofen gel etc to help with the pain until it drops off?

PrettyCandles · 09/03/2011 00:12

I've done this several times. It should stop hurting by tomorrow. It will turn black, shrivel up, and drop off within a few days.

If itcontinues hurting, or swells up and stays swollen for a few days, then probably ought to go to the doctor. You might get a little telling-off for doing self-surgery!

It's good to tie the tag off as close to the skin as possible. The only one I've tied off that has grown back is one where I didn't get the thread flush with the normal skin.

I've also had skin-tags removed by the dr, with local anaesthetic, snipping, and cautery. Frankly I prefer the DIY method. I've got one ready for harvesting right now. It's a bit big, so I think I might numb it first with a dab of Emla, to make sure I don't flinch and tie it off too short, like I did with the one that grew back.

chocadoodle · 09/03/2011 19:19

I had a skin tag in between my butt cheek and upper thigh. Used to find it really irrating when I was sitting in the bath (for some reason I was more aware of it then) GP refused to remove it saying it was a cosmetic problem rather than medical but to go back if it kept growing. It did keep growing but I didn't bother going back to GP. Got my DH to tie it up with cotton, really bloody hurt. My neighbours must've wondered what was going on, I was really screaming as he faffed around with it for ages. Think he quite enjoyed inflicting the pain using my permission as an excuse.

Did the trick though, fell off cleanly a couple of days later.

edwardsbella · 09/03/2011 19:34

its still a bit sore ,and has swollen up a little and got darker in colour

Blush thouht I was the only one to do thisBlush
I had two that I hated, only small, so what I did was nipped them with my nail scissors, not at the base, just the tip, they bled very slightly then after a couple of days dropped off! No sign of any re-growth yet!

edwardsbella · 10/03/2011 13:48

still there and still sore - what should i do

Bearcat · 10/03/2011 18:21

Did one on my neck a couple of years ago. Very satisfying when it disappeared.
It was bloody difficult though looking in the mirror and trying to tie the thread when everything was the opposite way round in the mirror.
Didn't hurt though.

PS i was trying to find the 'Arse Doctors' tying off her own pile experience on MN to show my SIL and just couldn't find it. Anyone know where it is? That WAS funny!
