If DS is really frightened by you not being there, and you can't go with, then I'd say let him off it.

Won't do anything for his confidence if you aren't there to help him will it?

Maybe go in the summer, all of you once a fortnight or something.

Is it the same teacher dubs, if so wld not force him if genuinely scared

I do understand, but if you back down on this without him even trying will it mean he will battle harder about other things? Only you know the answer to this! Just throwing my thoughts out there.
