Another suspected urine infection in dd - when will it ever end cos I have just about had enough!

Anyone else got experience of this. It's driving me nuts and I have no idea how she just keeps getting this. She has constant problems with her 'minnie' and I don't know what to do to help her. She's just had a course of Trimethroprim (sp) a few weeks ago, which seemed to clear it up, but it has just returned. Next available appointment is Friday, unless we ring up for an emergency one in the morning and go through the whole triage over the phone process.......yawn. Why can't they just give you an emergency one when it's clear she needs to be seen!? That means I will call at 9am, the nurse won't call me until near 11am and then if she thinks dd deserves to be seen, we will perhaps get an appointment tomorrow sometime. Forgive the rant........I'm just so fed up with this and feel so helpless!

my dd got it , once, thankfully, but i put it down to the nappies.

Poor dd! Will she drink Cranberry juice? Or some lemon juice in water? Appanately the acid kills off the infection or something.
The situation with the drs is really bad. That is such a long time to wait. Most surgeries are moving over to the phone in the morning for a definite appt that day way of doing things.

Actually, I haven't been down the homeopathic route, so if all else fails, I may well investigate that.
She won't drink cranberry juice Cadbury, but is drinking lots of water. Guess I won't be giving Sis a game of squash tomorrow now either! There's no way I can send her to school when she's running to the loo every 10 minutes for nothing more than a drip! It smells very nasty down there too despite a shower this evening.

aero try cranberry and raspberry... it isn't as bitter as just cranberry...

Has she had any kidney scans? If she's having recurrent UTIs she should be investigated further, I think.

DS had one definite UTI and one possible one and he had an ultrasound and a DMSA examination. They need to be taken seriously because scarring can damage growing kidneys.

Definitely push for a referral for her. Poor little girl - she must be sore

lol Cadders. Tbh, I'm pretty sure she'll need another course of anti-biotics, but how on earth do I prevent this happening again. She is so sore too.

does she have them one after the other or is there a gap n between?
just wondering if they aren't giving her long enough courses of drugs to really get rid of it so it keeps re-occurring

Some children take a low dose of trimethoprim every day, Aero. This might be an option?

I was told that holding on to wee until ablsolutely the last minute might increase ones chances of getting an infection - might be an old wives tale but it might be worth asking for a special dispensation at school for her to go as soon as she things she might need to.

also bear in mind that ab's can cause thrush which will also make her uncomfortable down there

so when she has them make sure she is getting some probiotics to build up that healthy bacteria again

where do you get probiotics from?

Well, it's only a month since she had the abs SL. Before that she's just been sore on and off and a bit whiffy, but nothing showed up on the swab or in the urine until this last time and it took a swab to show it - urine was clear.

I think they usually automatically refer children for further investigations if they suffer urine infections? (With boys I think they do it after just one or two: with girls, certainly after several) but as HM says, recurrent infections can cause damage to kidneys or have an underlying cause.

there are probiotic drinks (yakult etc) and i THINK that kellogs muddles have them in too (but may be wrong)

perhaps it could be something else aero? would definitely push for further tests

Cranberry juice does help(if you can get some into her) i used to get them bad when i was a kid, just been told by my midwife that i have one now. So i know how she feels, i would try and get to see gp tomorow.

I have tried giving her acidophilus in her juice (she hates the probiotic drinks and all thinks milky), and she will have it under duress (because I tell her it will help).
Hm - I think I will ask for a referral this time because she's so plagued with this. Didn't know about the low dose ab though.

Also re the holding it thing......she doesn't normally, but she had a school trip the other day and her teacher said at the end of the day '' was so good. She needed a wee desperately halfway round and she managed to hold it all the way until we got back'!! Needless to say I explained dd's situation at this point and that if she needs to go, then she needs to go now whatever they're doing.

I'm not saying that caused it btw, but I sure don't believe it can have helped!

In my area, just one infection and you are referred to the hospital outpatients for scan and appointment with consultant. This is because of the risk of long term kidney damage if there is a problem. I have just been there with my child.

The consultant spoke alot about bubble baths or anything that foams in the bath. Apparently it is Number one cause of urine infection symptoms in young children. Something to do with the chemicals stripping natural bacteria.

I think if you have not already had it, push for a referral.
