saf - what you got on at drs? good luck for it x

saf - (again) need your teachery help. i have a stupid problem brought on by ocd and my own stupid self. got this chart from school on friday with 13 sections on it. all graded 1-9. dd got couple of 8s, some 7s,6s,5s and 2 x 3s.

school said 8s were really good (they should be on level 5 apparently) and so would stretch in those areas, anything under 5 they needed extra help with and would be getting it.

1 of her 3s was in expressing her emotions Hmm and 1 was in pe (not bothered, this is the child that my neighbour thought had disabilities because dp carries her everywhere Blush shes just lazy).

anyway, all good. then in a conversation with another mother at the school she tells me that a mutual aquaintance of ours whose dd has just left dd's class for another school, is very upset because at this new school her dd is very behind.

Then this mum tells me her sons scores and his are mainly all 8s,7s and 1 x9, plus a couple of 3s.

so now, because of my crap ocd im worried that dd is really behind Blush

so - what the hell is this piece of paper? and what level should she be on?

apologies for long self indulgent ocd post.

TotalChaos · 04/10/2010 10:59

fluffy - don't panic, at this young age school grades should be taken with a pinch of salt, apart from the PE and emotions Hmm area she has reached the whatnot level and beyond in everything, so that's all good. It sounds like Early Years Foundation State Profile subject point scores. Is your DD at the start of year 1? At the under 7 stage, it can take a while for them to click with reading and writing, and once that takes off, everything else with. In the meantime keep reading with her and encouraging board games and so that she gets to do number stuff in a fun way and otherwise leave the boring school stuff to school.

Looking back at DS's report at end of reception, he got four sixes, 3 sevens, 5 eights and one 9, and has done fine in terms of National Curriculum levels ever since.

BrianAndHisBalls · 04/10/2010 11:11

total - thats just made me even more arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Grin because the teachers were making out that her 2 x 8s were amazing Hmm and her whole report (she's just started year 1) is way lower than your son's was. Her old teacher was talking about her being G&t which is why im so confused.

i have no doubt it probably doesn't actually mean anything at all in the long term, its just really worrying (for my ocd!) that the school is saying she's gifted and that 8s are exceptional yet thats obviously not true Confused Really strange.

Also we do loads of homework every night, number bonds, whole ort book, spellings, word recognition out of context etc

So how could the whole class have got 'behind'? I did hate her reception teacher i must admit, i think she was shit (answers own question).

Arghhhhhhhhhh go away ocd!!!

Sorry, I know this is a crapy non problem its just triggering my bloody ocd Blush

doesn't your DD (and you!) get bored shitless with all that homework?

could be that they are undermarking them a bit, and have higher expectations, and my DS's school could be veering on the generous side - it's not a very erm high flying school shall we say.

BrianAndHisBalls · 04/10/2010 11:27

total - god yes i do, its an ort book each night, then there is a list of set words they have to learn out of context before they go onto the next level so 'found' 'painted' 'key' etc. Then when they've learnt each set they get the next book, she's on ort stage 4 (just looked it up). Then she has to do number bonds for 10, then 2x2 etc up to 10, then bloody recorder. Angry i hate that recorder!!!!

saf - theres 13 sections they are called 'disposition and attitudes' 'social development' 'emotional development' 'language for communication and thinking' 'linking sounds and letters' 'reading' 'writing' 'numbers as labels and for counting' 'calculating' 'shape, space and measures' 'knowledge ans understanding of the world' 'physical development' and 'creative development' any ideas?

apologies again for my crappy non problem, im just in a tizz, think its lack of sleep

TotalChaos · 04/10/2010 11:31

ah you see at this time in year 1, DS was still on level 1+ ORT (they put him back after the summer holidays for no apparent reason..) and was starting off on the number bonds, but didn't do any multiplications till further on in year one. so although is eyfs scores were higher, the work he was doing at beginning of year one was significantly easier. so maybe all these number are a pile of horseshit (shrugs)

so - in conclusion - I wouldn't worry. Really. To be blunt - I can't guarantee you 100% that your DD - or any child on here - will never fall behind academically at any point. But if they do, you work with school/and or "source" helpful books and MN suggestions to try and dimprove the situation. ie. you cope anyway. as that's what parenting is about.

TotalChaos · 04/10/2010 11:32

OMFG daily recorder practice. should be prohibited under Human Rights Act

Hello Smile

Back from the hospital. Nemo is now on the waiting list for Portage. And will have a physio and a social care worker too.

They are looking at his LDs and development more closely now he's nearly 18 months. We will aquire more people as he gets older too and he qualifies for so much help with his development! I'm really pleased that the Community Paed was so cluded up. Means that he is now 'in the system'.

Brian - 'you are worrying over nothing' is what I want to say but I do understand why you are worrying about it.

I bet there are children in DD's class who didn't get grades as good as she did! PE is shite. Ignore but withthe emotional stuff, she's only little and they all develop emotionally at such different rates.

Please don't feel bad about it. Smile

The 'mo sleep routine' is back in place with Nemo too. Ah well.

Mittz - our hoover blew just like that too! I nearly shat myself! Thought I was going to die and everything!!!

Are we weighing in tomorrow?

I have the docs at 3.20 for my ADs. What time are you going SAF?

Bitter - managed to get in?

Hey TC, UNO and 100.

I've weighed in. 11stone 13 again. sigh. But have not made a huge effort with food or exercise but to be expected. Want to get to 11 stone by Xmas.

more importantly - glad it was a productive appointment Mousey, and various things are being put in place. Is he going to get referred to speech therapy do you know?
