Caucasian parents with brown and blue eyes, children's eye colour?

Hi everyone, sorry I was not sure in what subject I should post this.
I'm curious to find out the eye colour probability of children whom caucasian parents have blue and brown eyes, to see what are the odds my child could have blue eyes, if I had one more.
My dad had brown eyes, my mum has blue eyes, I have brown eyes, my toddler has brown eyes but his dad has blue eyes.
If we had another child is the chance him/her having have blue eyes about 50/50 or less?
Does anyone's family have similar eye coulours and what were the children's eye colour?

Parents - brown and blue
Children - brown, blue, brown

KittenKong · 11/08/2021 09:55

Mine were very dark brown as a child but somewhere along the way turned green (as the poster above says - my sisters brown eyes can change to green, we say she turns into the hulk)

My dad also had brown eyes & my mum had blue. Of me and my siblings, we are all either blue eyed or green eyed. Dh also has one brown and one blue eyed parent. Dh and I are green eyed. One of our dc had brown eyes but it’s more hazel now. We also have a green and a blue.

Greenrubber · 11/08/2021 10:10

I always heard that brown was the more dominant gene
But my sister has blue eyes her husband has brown and their son has blue eyes

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 11/08/2021 10:16

Parents; 1 Blue, 1 Brown
One child: Brown

Notcoolmum · 11/08/2021 10:19

The blue eye gene is recessive so linked to grandparents. I worked out my chances to be 1 in 4 after my DC1 had blue eyes. Then DC2 also had blue eyes.

HermioneKipper · 11/08/2021 10:22

Me: brown eyes
Husband: blue eyes

Child one - green
Child two - green
Child three - blue

So far no brown eyes at all! Although apparently they can change until 7 years old. Child one is 5 and has had green eyes since 1 so assume they may stay that way.

I was a bit irritated as I thought at least one of my children would get my eyes but nope!

I’d say for you it’s a 50/50 chance

Zilla1 · 11/08/2021 10:23

The last time I looked, the heritability was a little more complex than 50:50 as there are more genes involved and it's not only a straightforward dominant/recessive arrangement. Can't find anything rigorous quickly but -

I’d also heard brown eyes were dominant but not in our case! Although out of grandparents one has brown eyes, two have blue and one has green.

So seems like green eyes may be dominant! Although I don’t know many people with green eyes except my children!

My parents are same as yours (eye colour wise obviously!) and I also have brown eyes and my dh has blue. Our first child has blue eyes. Second and third have brown. Interestingly, I have olive skin and dh does not, and the blue eyed child has fair hair and olive skin, which you would not expect. Second child with brown eyes has very pale skin and medium brown hair. Third with brown eyes has olive skin and blonde hair. Can't make any sense of it. I find it quite fascinating.

We have two DC and both of them have got my DH's very dark brown eyes (and had them at birth) rather than my blue.

ShrekandDonkey · 11/08/2021 10:28

My eyes are brown. Inherited from my maternal side where every member has brown eyes.

DH's are blue.

Both our DC have blue eyes although DD's are much more of a greeny/blue colour.

WeatherwaxOn · 11/08/2021 10:32

Both my parents were blue eyed. My sibling has brown eyes, I have blue.
Sibling is married to someone of a different ethnicity with brown eyes. Their eldest child has one blue eye, one hazel. Their second child has brown eyes.
MIL has brown eyes, FIL has blue; 3 children - one brown eyed, the other two blue.

mintich · 11/08/2021 10:37

DH has blue, I have brown. DD has blue eyes (a lot lighter than DH), DS1 has green eyes, DS2 has blue eyes.

SpacePug · 11/08/2021 10:39

I have blue/grey eyes
DH brown
DS1 brown eyes
DS2 are looking blue but he's 6 months so don't know if they'll change.

Why does it matter what colour eyes the child will have?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 11/08/2021 10:41

I am sure I read somewhere that genetically all non brown eyes are blue, but that actual colour perceived ranged through all the not brown options

Kind of like supermarket stuff....it may be labelled Own Brand, but it's really Heinz :o

lanbro · 11/08/2021 10:41

I have brown eyes, xh has blue but both my daughters have green eyes, as do both their grandmas. I'm dark and xh is far so I was expecting dark haired children with blue eyes, both blonde with green eyes!

BorisJohnsonMicrowavesHisBacon · 11/08/2021 10:44

DS surprised both of us... really pale blue beautiful eyes.

My eyes are green and his dads are greenish brown. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Genetics are really strange!

Dozer · 11/08/2021 10:45

Yes, it’s not 50/50, from DCs’ biology think brown eye genes more ‘dominant’ so much more likely over blue and hazel.

DH and I both have hazel eyes. DC1 brown, DC2 blue.

ILookAtTheFloor · 11/08/2021 11:44

My parents both have blue eyes. I have blue eyes.

My DH has hazel eyes, his mum has blue eyes and his dad has brown eyes.

Both our daughters have blue eyes and I was surprised. I guess DH carries the recessive gene.

ILookAtTheFloor · 11/08/2021 11:47

I remember drawing little grids in biology at school, blue was bb, brown BB and then brown with recessive gene was Bb, probably very simplistic but it stuck with me Grin

Iusedtobecarmen · 11/08/2021 11:49

DH hazel eyes
Me blue
DC 1 hazel eyes
DC2 dark brown!
DC3 Blue

Surprisedpikachu · 11/08/2021 11:53

DH has dark brown eyes. Mine are dark green.

Both DC have brown eyes, but one of them has lighter brown than the other

Itsbeen84yearss · 11/08/2021 11:55

Many dd has a mix of both colours from me and her dad. She’s has a ring of green around her pupil and then blue from me around that. Not sure how common that is

Bells3032 · 11/08/2021 12:15

My mum had brown eyes and my dad has blue. My sister has blue eyes, I had blue eyes til my teens and they then darkened to green!
