I’m really really not tech savvy..... dc have a gaming laptop and Iv promised sims4 of which Iv paid for on origin but can’t dowbload it as I need another 13GB! There’s hardly anything on the laptop so nothing to delete to make more room!! Can I put a memory card in it or something? Or does that not help??

Going on add/remove there isn’t an option to uninstall a lot of things. For example the top one is 3D viewer Microsoft corporation at 8KB but uninstall isn’t highlighted so can’t.

The biggest is roblox at 27.2GB One drive is the next biggest at 116MB.

You might not have a D drive, but if you do it will show up in explorer next to the C drive. If you do have an extra drive it might be empty as Midgebabe suggested, and that will be where you need to install the game to.

Look up defragmentation - imagine a tidy garage and you just dump crap back in there leaving small gaps - if you tidy up you free up space .... this is what happens when your computer uses programmes

It memory sits in a space and then when added to - goes to the next space - but the next one doesn’t use thafreed up space

I can’t find a c drive either? I can see one drive but that’s it?

green that makes sense, how do I make sure it does that?

Click on This PC. It will list some folders then under those it will list "devices and drives". The one that says "Local Disk (C:)" is your C drive. If you have any other drives they will also be listed.

Sorry for the delay in replying I haven’t had the laptop near me all weekend. I’m going to have a look now..../

It may say BOOT or something else rather than "Local disk" but it will say C: in brackets. That is the C drive.

The space is being used up with apps and games. My guess is that loads of stuff has been downloaded from Steam. You need an external hard drive.

QuestionableMouse · 08/04/2019 13:45

Is it Windows ten by any chance? Its quite the memory hog.

Honestly the easiest way is to buy an external hard drive and install games there.

Inbedbynine · 08/04/2019 14:01

Ok... took months to chose this laptop and the curry’s guy assured me it was all I’d need for the dc for gaming! What is the physically smallest hard drive I can get for it? I have no idea what I’m looking for? Eldest has asd so adding a big bulky thing will not go down well....

OP posts:
Inbedbynine · 08/04/2019 14:01

Yes it is windows 10

Have a look at your pending updates. I bet there's a big wodge of memory stuck there.

Inbedbynine · 08/04/2019 14:13

Ok... where would I find them?? Blush

The one that says Windows-SSD is your C drive.

The problem isn't pending updates. It is clear from your post at 12:56 that the problem is apps and games at 181GB. My guess is that is all (or almost all) games.

You need to get an external hard drive that connects via USB. That will allow you to have a lot more storage on the laptop and will solve the problem permanently.

Inbedbynine · 08/04/2019 15:25

Ok thanks. Really annoyed as I thought this laptop would solve all the issues I was having before with the dc and games!

What exactly am I looking for? I don’t want to mess this up as well!

You need an external harddrive, something like one of these:

www.amazon.co.uk/s?ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_13&crid=1LJB6NSWY918L&sprefix=external+hard%2Caps%2C159&k=external+hard+drives&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

They plug in to a USB port so you don't need to do anything to the actual laptop to use one.

Inbedbynine · 08/04/2019 15:45

So it doesn’t matter which one? They don’t need to be ‘compatible’ or anything? Do you just plug it in, then go try download the game and it will work?

I don't think the laptop needs an external drive. The OP needs to find out what this is: Apps and games 181 gb and start deleting the stuff that is not used or is less important.

QuestionableMouse · 08/04/2019 15:55

I have a Chrome book now so can't remember exactly but if you click around there should be a storgae bit in settings where you can see exactly what's using your memory.

nauticant · 08/04/2019 15:55

OP, you need to find out what the biggest files are. Do this google search and follow the instructions:

Have a look at this and try the first step.

If I've read the thread correctly, the extra stuff consists of games her sons have installed. I suppose she could unistall them but it would be a bit mean, especially as they come from Steam so have probably been paid for. The problem seems to be that the harddrive in the laptop is pretty small for a gaming system.

OP, the blurb describing the external drive should tell you whether it works with a Windows system. I don't know what your budget would be but look for something like this www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-PlayStation-STEA1000400/dp/B00TKFEEAS/ref=sr_1_3?s=gateway&keywords=external+hard+drives+for+windows+laptop&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1554738568&sr=8-3
