I need a laptop that will mainly be used for the dc to play games on aswell as me the odd bit of typing etc. The dc say it needs t be able to play rust.... apparantly it needs a good CPU whatever that means? What should I be looking for? The last laptop we had they couldn’t play rust on it so don’t want to make that mistake again... quite limited with funds... don’t want to go over £300 really. Can anyone help? No idea what I need and don’t trust curreys not to over sell me something!

Medions are made by Levano....it’s their gaming arm. So an ok make. To be honest it’s the hardware components which are important and none of these laptop “names” make their own.....they all use the same stuff.

The brand you’re paying for is how they’ve put the spec together, the marketing and the plastic case.

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 16:42

Nope. Argos one has a shit graphics card...avoid anything which says shared graphics card.

Ilmb · 23/09/2018 16:50

Ok I’m wondering if I’d qualify for part exchanging my old one into curry’s... how do I find out the information they need to know about it if I didn’t buy it new and have no paperwork to say what it is?

If you compare the £800 curreys one to the £650 laptop directs one, which is ‘better’ or which fits the needs we have? Do they both have what I need, don’t need to buy any extras?

OP posts:
Ilmb · 23/09/2018 16:57

The curreys one isn’t windows... doesn’t that mean I can’t use it for things I need?

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 17:20

The curry’s one does have windows 10.

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 17:25

The £650 medion one will do everything you need.

The more expensive asus one is better because it has an solid state drive which makes them quicker. But you don’t need one. My laptop doesn’t have one and I game on it just fine. It wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me when buying a new laptop if a new laptop doesn’t have an ssd.

I think the processor speed, the amount of memory and the graphics card are more important and the medion one is fine for that.

I’m not sure on the currys laptop cashback but they know what they’re doing so you could take your old one in and ask. They’ll be able to determine the spec, etc and decide a price. I do think there’s an age limit on it though because I know my current laptop at 10yo won’t qualify for it. Might need to be newer than about 7yo I think.

Ilmb · 23/09/2018 17:29

How do you know how old a laptop is? Iv had it 2-3 years. I think they said it was 2 years old when I got it but that might be wrong,. I guess I could take it to curreys and see what they will do... if they won’t give any money off get the £650 one...?

Do you have to pay for anything on windows? What about firewalls? I’m very out the loop!

Bimgy85 · 23/09/2018 17:45

@Ilmb Curry's pc world do flexible payment options! For example if a laptop is €600 you can pay a 10% deposit upfront (60) then pay a set amount each month. Something like 40 euro a month then in six months time pay the remaining balance 200/300. Really handy

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 17:51

You don’t need to pay anything for windows.

You can get free firewalls such as avg.

It won’t have Office so you can either download Libreoffice which is a free slightly different version of word, PowerPoint, etc. Or if you want the real deal you will have to buy it.

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 17:52

And curry’s will know how old your current laptop is. It’ll either have a model number on a base plate on the bottom or they will get it in dos mode or something and find out......

CaptSkippy · 23/09/2018 17:56

OP the one you posted last seems pretty decent. With regards to lagging, that also depends on your internet connection and how many people are using it at the same time.

Ilmb · 23/09/2018 18:03

We have fibre now which is Lilith better than it was before that’s for sure. One of my dc is autistic and being online is his ‘safe haven’ so fibre became a must!

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 18:14

The Argos one will lag when gaming no matter how good your broadband speed.

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 18:15

The information will get to the computer quick enough but the computer graphics won’t be able to display it quickly enough.

sleep5 · 23/09/2018 18:26

This has an i7 and is a good deal according to Hot uk deals (£589):
www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0792DXX54

Ilmb · 23/09/2018 18:52

sleep that doesn’t have very good ratings?

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 19:01

It also doesn’t have a good graphics card, it is a dedicated one but it’s very basic and not a gaming graphics card. Fan noise in the reviews suggests it has an overheating issue which will. Be made worse by gaming.

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 19:00

@NicoAndTheNiners are you still there? Haven’t got the laptop but wondered what type of laptop we would need to play arc and TF2? Cheaper than that curry’s one?

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 16/10/2018 19:25

You need a decent graphics card. So a dedicated one, avoid anything which says integrated graphics. So that curry’s one I linked to earlier I doubt would be good enough, you need a gaming laptop and they’re more expensive. I haven’t played ARK but googled and got the following

Here are the ARK: Survival Evolved system requirements (minimum)

CPU: Intel Core i5-2400/AMD FX-8320 or better
CPU SPEED: Info
RAM: 8 GB
OS: Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit versions)
VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GTX 670 2GB/AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or better
FREE DISK SPACE: 60 GB

NicoAndTheNiners · 16/10/2018 19:26

Tf2 system requirements don’t seem as much

Here are the Team Fortress 2 system requirements (minimum)

CPU: Info
CPU SPEED: 1.7 GHz Processor or better
RAM: 512 MB
OS: Windows® 7 (32/64-bit)/Vista/XP
VIDEO CARD: Info
FREE DISK SPACE: 15 GB
Team Fortress 2 Recommended Requirements

CPU: Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better)
CPU SPEED: Info
RAM: 1 GB
OS: Windows® 7 (32/64-bit)
VIDEO CARD: Info
FREE DISK SPACE: 15 GB

Ilmb · 16/10/2018 19:29

The most expensive ASUS laptop won’t play arc of tf2? But will play rust?

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 16/10/2018 19:30

So this is the cheapest one on pc world I can find with good enough spec. It’s the graphics card/video card which pushes the price up.
