I need a laptop that will mainly be used for the dc to play games on aswell as me the odd bit of typing etc. The dc say it needs t be able to play rust.... apparantly it needs a good CPU whatever that means? What should I be looking for? The last laptop we had they couldn’t play rust on it so don’t want to make that mistake again... quite limited with funds... don’t want to go over £300 really. Can anyone help? No idea what I need and don’t trust curreys not to over sell me something!

Ok, any downfalls of a refurbed? I only have my crap experience to go on...... will there be any kind of tech support available? Will setting it up be easy?

Sorry x posting. Thanks for the acer link... do you just personally not like acer science? Just a personal preference thing or are they not rated? I have to admit all the ones Iv had in the past were acer..//

X post again sorry. Would the £800 play rust?

You may get a warranty. Worth finding a company that offers one.

That's about it in terms of support.

Computer wise most things are plug and play and pretty hard to do permanent damage to... How much support do you usually need to set a laptop up?

Biggreygoose · 22/09/2018 17:14

Acer make very slick Chromebooks. Been very impressed with my wife's one.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 17:16

As I said before I’m not very good with technology and as the only adult in the house it will fall down to me and only me to set it up!

OP posts:
Scienceforthewin · 22/09/2018 17:17

I've just not had acers, myself or at work, so don't know what they are like

Biggreygoose · 22/09/2018 17:25

All you need to be able to do is switch it on, install whatever internet monitoring/control/antivirus software you use and connect to the internet. The rest should take care of it's self.

Most refurb machines come with os installed so don't usually need to worry about that.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 17:37

Ok. How about parental settings/controls, do each laptop have their own ones that I can sorted out? For example the one we have I have a log in and kids have their own log in you click on, mines passworded and theirs are 4 numbers.... do all laptops have that sort of thing? I have blockers on the router but I know for a fact it’s shite and doesn’t block what it’s aupposed to!!

Could someone just answer, the first acer one that science kindly recommend, what does it mean it’s ‘processor is slightly lower on minimum spec? What problem would this cause me?

Thank you, by the way for everyone that is contributing to my quest, I appreciate its probably mind numbingly boring and frustrating with a simpleton like me Grin

You would need to set up separate accounts for each user. These can then be individually restricted.

That's done through the OS, so every windows machine will similar to your current windows one etc.

It means the processor is lower than the minimum recommended for rust.

It would be like trying to use 2l petrol car in a race for 2.5l cars. You will be ok and everything will run, but unlikely to do very well.

Ilmb · 22/09/2018 17:48

Thank you big that makes sense!

Would it be worth forking out that much for that particular model?

Does the second acer link support rust?

OP posts:
Scienceforthewin · 22/09/2018 20:37

Rust game spec is Intel Core i7-3770, 8gb ram, and graphics GTX 670 2GB or better

the first acer was slightly lower - i5 instead of an i7, so may run it poorly or not at all - both worst case. It could be fine! The second acer was i7-8550U (fine) plus 8gb and gforce mx150 2gb.

I'm not an expert on graphics card (I'm not a gamer) so you need someone to confirm if the GeForce mx150 2gb is better or worse than the recommended minimum GTX 670 2GB...

Ilmb · 23/09/2018 12:33

Thank you. Any gaming experts able to answer the last point of science’s last post?

It’s a lot slower, 52fps vs 136

Ilmb · 23/09/2018 14:50

Thanks nico..... although I have no idea what I was reading on the links!
...... so I’ll need the more expensive one? Will this last? I won’t have to get another one in a year or two as it isn’t good enough/needs updating?

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 16:08

The more expensive one? Is that the aspire 5....if so it’s got the mx150 so I would have said no, it won’t play Rust because it’s under the requirements which Rust say it needs.

Saying that someone on YouTube has tested Rust out with this graphics card and it seems to work ok.

The problem is how future proof is it? If Rust updates in a years time to bettter graphics, etc then the system requirement may upgrade and the mx150 may not cope....then again it might.

The mx150 is a dedicated graphics card but bottom of the range.

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 16:10

The ASUs one I linked to at curry’s has a much better graphics card. Think they’re the same price but you don’t get your acer discount.

Can you wait until December as normally fairly good pre xmas sales?

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/09/2018 16:13

Or this is £650. [[https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/medion-p6681-core-i7-7500u-8gb-1tb-geforce-gtx-1050-15.6-inch-windows-10-ga-30022545/version.asp here]

Doesn’t have a ssd but though they’re nice and make the system faster they’re not essential. The system requirements and graphics card will do Rust.

Ilmb · 23/09/2018 16:30

Iv not heard of the make of that £650 one... should that worry me or does it just highlight my lack of knowledge?!

OP posts:
Ilmb · 23/09/2018 16:31

Originally I was getting it as a joint xmas present, so was waiting on the sales but Iv promised it earlier due to something they’ve both been through recently.

You can do flexible payment options with some places. Would prefer that as it's very difficult near impossible to get a good all around laptop for 300
