I've actually cried all over a computer. That I think I broke.

Or maybe windows 8 hates me.

I need a fecking drink.

I'm 46 years old, allegedly not technologically incompetant (I used to repartition and reinstall and everything when I had windows XP, just haven't needed to do it for years) and I've cried all over this virtually new computer and I think I am about to cry again. Like actually plopping tears and everything.

If I can't fix it my son gets two crap Christmasses in a row. ( Mil was dying in hospital last year, so not so grave, but his most wanted xams pressies are totally redundant without his 'puter.

Due to a FURBAR during a.... "go back to factory settings you laggy git faced computer" session ....things went horribly wrong. Mainly cos the computer was speaking in Italian and I was tired. Probably.

So I had amazon UK rush a proper full copy of windows 8.1 in Bloody ENGLISH to Italy. DHL finally found me after a tense 48 hours of increasingly heated phone calls with me yelling "how can I always be "customer out" if you have kept me trapped in the house for TWO DAYS!"

I got into BIOS (whatever that is) I changed the boot thingie to CD-rom drive as first choice (gingerly, never been in BIOS before) All went swimmingly, but then it hung for hours and It couldn't finish the last bit of a clean install.

So a youtubber siad delete partitions.

So I did. Well some of them. 2. ACER and USER

And then I clicked next and the fecking computer complained something was missing so it couldn't run the cd-rom drive. Or something like that.

I have spent 113 euros. And all I have managed to do is kill the computer more.

And christmas is ruined cos the computer shop is not taking any repairs in till he comes back in the New Year.

Dos anybody have any ideas what has gone so horribly wrong and how to put it right ?

And if you don't. Can you please start sticking pins in an effigy of the Windows 8 wholly annoyingly displeasuring start screen of pissingoffness.

Or pass a hanky.

Is this peri menopause making me an emotional wreck due to poxy software ?

Wine. I wish I had wine.

DON'T DELETE ANY MORE PARTITIONS!

CarpeVinum · 21/12/2013 21:09

I'm on my my son's iPad

The only fecking thing that's ever worked out of the box and has never stopped working.

Oh god, I've jinxed the iPad

CarpeVinum · 21/12/2013 21:12

Is the driver for the CD drive on the Acer website?

I went to acer.it and search mc605 driver, dowloaded (to the iPad) a set up thingie, bunged it in dropbox so I don't lose it, but...not sure how to get it off iPad and onto computer.

I tired pleading with them. But it didn't work.

I guess nice (I hope) new nieghbour will let me download it from her house and stick that on the flashdrive too.

Laptops these days tend to have lots of IMPORTANT stuff on secret hidden partitions, it's not nice and simple like the old XP days where you had a disk, people lose discs and then get annoyed about it, so they put it on a partition so you can't lose it unless you delete it, you muppet Grin - actually, cynical reason is also so they can include a load of crappy bloatware on the partition drive but you can't delete it, so every new laptop has 4895897 "helpful" programs and utilities running that you need to delete before it's usable. Sigh.

But. It will be fine. All you need to do is get the drivers from the website (somehow) and put those on.

You may also be able to use an external CD/DVD drive - try asking on facebook if anybody has one? They usually don't need drivers.

RandomMess · 21/12/2013 21:13

Geez you are all talking a completely foreign language.

Passes over another bottle of gin & slimline, at least it means you won't care so much?

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 21/12/2013 21:15

You could try ipad cable to computer. But it probably won't show up because ipads are programmed to come up in itunes. But, if the computer doesn't have the driver to do that, it might not know and won't try to do anything so you can just use the ipad like a giant USB stick.

Keep a copy in the normal ipad downloads folder because dropbox is "cloud" storage, ie, not actually stored on the device.

CarpeVinum · 21/12/2013 21:17

I think you screwed up when you deleted the Acer partition but ALL IS NOT LOST!

Not me! Bastard YOUTUBER screwed up, evil bastard telling random perimenopausal to start attacking thier partitions and.... I did.

Oh god. I am so thick. Jump of a cliff carpe, ok youtuber.

head/bang/desk

So.. what we are thinking is... evil youtuber is entirely responsible for my cd not being able to install due to missing driver.

But

if I can get to another puter in the morning, I can bung windows disk on a flshdrive AND download mc605 drivers on same flashdrive...and that shoudl work ? Usb driver not likely to be required ?

Amiwarm ?

Imlove you people. I love you all.

Why can't I stop fucking blubbing. Christ Ii am regressi gnthe olderIi get.

I just... didn't expect this, i thought it would be essier now a million ti es harder (and youtuber infested)'than it used to be.

An why didn't stinking acer give me a factory setting disc for their own shit, even if they were too tight to give me a eindows 8 disc ?

Badtards

It's a desktop by the way. For son. for school and mincraft. And latterly Steam, which ai blame for allmthis starting in thenfirst place.

Was FINE before I installed DOTA2 for him.

I haven't murdered the hard drive entirely then ? Tis a softwear problem ?

GobbySadcase · 21/12/2013 21:22

Not helpful I know, I used to do all sorts previously as in fitting new hardware etc but I DESPISE FECKIN WINDOWS 8!!!!!

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 21/12/2013 21:24

Defo software.

They didn't give you a driver disk because you're not supposed to go into the BIOS and delete partitions...

Blame the youtuber Grin youtube is awful. Look on the bright side though, at least you didn't go searching for advice on yahoo answers.

I reckon you just want the acer drivers on the USB BTW. I really don't think a windows disk will allow you to copy it over.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 21/12/2013 21:24

Windows 8 is fine, shush Grin

1sassylassy · 21/12/2013 21:24

Which driver have you downloaded from the Acer site?

CarpeVinum · 21/12/2013 21:26

try asking on facebook if anybody has one?

I live in a field. All my facebook friends live in civilsed places, like avenice, or Rome or Florence.

Me. I get field. And next door has gone to bed. Ungrateful bastards. Four months ofmtheir builder waking me up with power tools at six am, and they go to bed at not yet 10.30 when I actually need to meet them.

Selfish.

I can ask them in the morning, if not... I'll just call all my mates and cry till somebody lends me their wifi and puter. And refuse to give emergency E glish help for CVs and children's impending tests until somebody comes ip trumps.

Or I could just ask. We like each other, sure ten of them will say yes.

Have nomidea why am building self into state of aggression about a refusal thatmhasn't happened.

Is this menopause proper ?

My boobs hurt like hell and my head is throbbing.

Imlove you all. Without you I wpuld be ploppy tear still!

I have hope in my heart.

Also, hang on.

You got a screen up (presumably with windows 8 installation type graphics) saying you need a driver? If so, then your CD drive is working, or windows is already installed.

Gah I'm supposed to be packing but I want to help!

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 21/12/2013 21:27

Oh no. Sorry. I read it wrong. Bollocks Blush

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 21/12/2013 21:29

Anyway. You need drivers on USB stick. Get every one the website has, if you can. You can probably go to an internet cafe (they have those in fields, right?! The cows need to update facebook every now and again.)

Once you have drivers, the DVD drive will work and recognise your CD. Don't download anything to do with windows 8, just the drivers.

CarpeVinum · 21/12/2013 21:30

Which driver have you downloaded from the Acer site?

setup-1.exe

Does that sound right ?

I swear Bertie I wasn't in BIOS when I deleted partitions (as instructed by bastard youtubers) I was in the actual proper cd installation. It said which bit of the hard drive do you want to install me on, I picked the one it was highlighting, and TWICE windows failed to finsihed the finshing up bit of the install. Just hung and claimed it couldn't finsihed. No restrating or anything.

Somthe third time I started clicking on the delete button that was also on the "pick a partition to install me on" prompt box. Cos the youtubers told me to.

It wasn't my idea.

Theh said it.

I feel your pain OP. I tried to upgrade Windows 8 to get a start button and it all kicked off. Stick with Bertie, the advice sounds great.

1sassylassy · 21/12/2013 21:38

What from this page?I cant see any setup.exe download.

1sassylassy · 21/12/2013 21:44

I have found you a complete driver pack here

CarpeVinum · 21/12/2013 21:44

ou got a screen up (presumably with windows 8 installation type graphics) saying you need a driver? If so, then your CD drive is working, or windows is already installed.

Oh yes, cd drive works fine, until that error box bit about the missing media file. It makes a lot of noise, windows installion dick has me choose language etc and then.... nightmare !

Not sure why it wouldn't install twice, BEFORE I started randomly decimating partions.

Lake

I am paraphrasing from memory, cos I have no idea how to find that screen again.

I fought the puter till it took me to troubleshooting, advanced, and then... whatever restore to factory settings options is. THEN , and this is where I think I fucked up the first time... it asked me if I wanted to do it to the unitá where windows was installed, or (I think) all unitá... or something like that. I was tired. It was in Italian. I have no idea why I clicked the non windows only unitá option.

And I have a horrible feeling I may have deleted drivers then too if unitá isn't a partition.

God they shpuldn't let unwualified people under the hood if it's this dangerous ! Not one mention of "if you press this button it will all go HORRIBLY wrong"

Didn't used to be like this.

OP posts:
BertieBowtiesAreCool · 21/12/2013 21:48

Hmmmmmm. Well it sounds as though your DVD drive IS working. Could be hard drive drivers I suppose, although I've never heard of needing those before.

Does it boot up from the hard drive at all or only with CD drive?

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 21/12/2013 21:48

AND - do you have an ethernet cable? If you plug it directly into your router it may be able to access the internet. If it doesn't need an ethernet driver.

CarpeVinum · 21/12/2013 21:50

I haven't cried for a whole 20 minutes!

You lot are AMAZING! It doesn't feel so bone crushingly bad and "ohhh I have fucked up so much" when you aren't on your own.

I just feel so stupid for listening to some person in his bedroom making videos and making it sound like he knew what he was talking about.

Sassy

No, it was from acer.it becuase the computer was bought here so I thought it would want drivers in its own language. I can't see where ai got it from now, it's gone. abut i have found this looks right ?

Hoggy let's huddle on the Windows8 "defeated by" bench.

OP posts:
BertieBowtiesAreCool · 21/12/2013 21:52

It doesn't matter what language the drivers are in :) Computer code doesn't vary by country. Download the English ones, then you know what's what.
