A thread for iPods, iPhones and ipads, add any hints, tips or tricks that you know, tell us about any cool apps, ask about apps. Just anything really :)

I'll start, on an iPhone, you can turn off auto correct, and the double space bar = full stop thing :o

oooohhh I have a question. My iPad has recently updated and now the keyboard is in two parts with a gap in the middle. I hate it. Anyone know how to revert back to how it was?

RiskItForABiscuit · 11/04/2012 12:09

If you press the home button and the power button simultaneously, it will take a screen shot and put the shot in photos.

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/04/2012 12:10

and to give back, you can take a screenshot on the iPad and iPhone by pressing the home and off button at the same time.

MardyBra · 11/04/2012 12:11

On the iPhone 4 you can hold down the main button for a couple of seconds and when it makes a "doink" noise you just have to say "call [insert name]" and it either:
a) calls that person from your contacts list or
b) calls some random person because it has misunderstood you.

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/04/2012 12:11

opps x-post. Great minds

MardyBra · 11/04/2012 12:13

I no longer have periods, I have iPeriods (app). Very helpful for tracking the perimenopause.

The torch app is very useful when taking teenagers into Hollister.

HJisoffwork · 11/04/2012 12:13

I was going to do the screen shot thing [glare]
dd3(18m) learnt it by herself

MardyBra · 11/04/2012 12:13

Great thread idea btw.

HJisoffwork · 11/04/2012 12:13

Siri has a sense of humour. Ask it to sing a song/tell a story/where to hide dead bodies.

Butwhatdoyoudoallday · 11/04/2012 12:17

Rebecca have you tried dragging the two halves of the keyboard together? I thought it was a feature they added for odd people who just type with their thumbs.

In App purchases is default set to ON on an iPad. To turn it off go to Settings> General> Restrictions> In-App Purchases and slide the switch to OFF. This will prevent awkward bills run up by a small child who didn't do anything wrong (Apple are really sneaky setting the default to ON imho).

dev9aug · 11/04/2012 12:18

RebeccaMumsnet use both your thumbs to push the keyboards towards the middle. It should become one... You can do the opposite to split it again. it was a feature added so you can type with both hands.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 11/04/2012 12:19

I wondered how people managed to post pictures of text conversations! Grin

Can't think of anything off the top of my head except that the TFL website is more accurate than any of the apps for checking buses in London. Leading on from that actually, does anyone know if you can have a webpage on the main screen - like a desktop shortcut, so I don't have to keep going in via Safari?

paulrn · 11/04/2012 12:22

DO NOT BUY AN IPAD. I got DP one of the new ones for her birthday and she has become surgically attached to it. Occasionally I get to feed her, rub her feet while she plays games and ease the tension in her fingers. It has also seemed to have given her tourette's as a burst of expletives erupts from the far end of the settee when a game goes wrong. So be warned, off now to wipe dribble from the corner of her mouth.

MardyBra · 11/04/2012 12:24

Paul - are you my DH? Apparently the ipad "follows" me around the house.

HJisoffwork · 11/04/2012 12:25

Yes to short cuts. Click on the arrow at the bottom on the page ( in the middle)and choose 'add to homepage'

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 11/04/2012 12:25

Oh I know.

TiltShiftGen only costs 69p but lets you do all those fancy photos that makes it look like you're taking pictures of miniatures (as seen in the credits of Sherlock) Very, very easy to use and strangely addictive.

Not that brilliant although I like it example here

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 11/04/2012 12:27

Oh HJisoffwork I think I love you Grin

paulrn · 11/04/2012 12:28

Mardy sadly no if it was you she wouldn't have had time to post however I have opened up a line of communication by playing words with friends.

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 11/04/2012 12:29

Wow! MNHQ on my thread!

OP posts:
ObviouslyOblivious · 11/04/2012 12:30

On the iPhone - double click the Home button. The bar shows all apps that are open. You may be surprised! Close them by pressing on one until a red minus appears and tap them. Ta da!

ObviouslyOblivious · 11/04/2012 12:31

Paul, you could send her scrawled messages and dirty pictures in Draw Something?

reckoner · 11/04/2012 12:32

the split keyboard... hold down the keyboard sign on the keyboard, click dock and merge. et voila.

ethelb · 11/04/2012 12:34

oooh, I just got my first iphone today. marks place.

Plus, how do I set up a separate itunes account on my MacMini to DPs one.

Any tips for setting up tonight??

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 11/04/2012 12:36

What are the consequences of leaving them open? Does it just use background power or is it racking up data usage?
