ipad owners - are you still using yours?

I managed to hold off getting an ipad v.1 although was v v tempted (lack of funds making the decision for me ...)

however, my birthday is coming up a few weeks after the British launch of ipad 2 and I still find myself drawn to one

so if you got one first time round are you still getting lots of use out of it? it's obviously too expensive to justify getting a toy which will only get used for the first few weeks/months

Yes, I use mine every day.

Great for checking something quickly, instead of putting PC on.

Read books on the Kindle app.

MN, Twitter.

Use instead of laptop in front of TV.

Have a look at the cases with integrated keyboard - they were not available when I bought mine and I think they look great.

greedychops · 03/03/2011 08:18

Yup I use mine every day too. Absolutely love it. Only a couple of really wee things that annoy me about it, but overall, its been one of the best purchases I've made.

MitchiestInge · 03/03/2011 08:23

use mine every day, wouldn't have bought it for myself but it's very nice

RubberDuck · 03/03/2011 08:24

Yes, every day. Love it for games, watching films/tv, reading books, checking mail, surfing the net. Couldn't live without it now.

geordieminx · 03/03/2011 08:27

Yup, am MN'ing from bed just now Grin

Love it love it love it, although not as much as ds (3.8) does... So I normally don't get a look in until he is at nursery/in bed

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/03/2011 08:29

Use mine every day. Had it a month and everyone said hold off for the new one. However, there's nothing in the new one that lights my fire so I'm glad I went ahead, although the price has dropped now of course!

lellibobs · 03/03/2011 08:35

Absolutely love mine for the speed of accessing Internet, my emails etc. Got mine for Christmas from DP he wants one as well. Only disappointment is that the BBC I player app doesn't work :( .

I use it all day and every day like now!

MitchiestInge · 03/03/2011 08:36

iplayer works on mine

Colliecollie · 03/03/2011 08:45

I use it everyday, and my 3 year old loves it too!

PinkWinged · 03/03/2011 08:49

Oooohhh - did you see the new one on TV last night with the bendy cover? Definitely want one of those now Grin

Geepers · 03/03/2011 08:51

I use mine all day, every day. Am using it right now. One of the best things I have ever bought, just wish I hadn't wasted money on the 3G version as I have never used it.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/03/2011 09:03

I have the 3G version and use it a lot out and about. Depends on where you're going to be using it.

Niceguy2 · 03/03/2011 09:26

Without a doubt we use ours daily. Despite being derided by the OH & my kids for "wasting money", they all use it. If only I could teach them to charge it when it's flat!

Have you noticed they've reduced the IPad1 by £100? IMO, £329 for the wifi version is now an absolute bargain. Yes, you could wait and get v2 but there's nothing there which is a OMG-I-MUST-HAVE

Credible rumours say Apple will bring out Ipad 3 before xmas and that the ipad 2 is in reality ipad 1.5.

generalhaig · 03/03/2011 11:03

oooh, finger hovering over the wifi ipad 1 ... so you don't reckon I'll kick myself for not waiting for ipad2? and is 16GB enough?

I won one!!!! Would never have coughed up for a v.1 of anything, but then I work in IT so am allowed to be deeply cynical about new kit.

I was a bit dubious at first but it's so much quicker than the laptop. I'm also taken with the apps that DD loves to play with that are, in fact, really good educational tools at the same time.

If I had the spare cash I would upgrade to IPad 3, leaving out version 2.

Mollymax · 03/03/2011 11:21

Another one who uses it every day :)
Am using it at the mo :)
So handy to have it to hand :)
The dc all love it too. :)
Dh occasionally too :)

thomasbodley · 03/03/2011 11:27

It's okay.

It's not £600 of okay. It has the same proportions and about half the functionality of a good netbook, for twice the price.

For reading, I thoroughly recommend the Kindle. The iPad app is atrocious and hurts my eyes.

I got my iPad free (from work) so I don't feel too pissed off with it. If I'd shelled out my own readies I'd be gutted at the waste of money.

greedychops · 03/03/2011 11:30

I don't think it's a waste of money at all. My dh has a laptop and has had various ones over the last few years, but I don't feel in the least jealous of any of them now that I have the iPad.

It is useful to have access to an apple lap top for certain things, but I don't regret the purchase for a single second. I am a big fan.

Niceguy2 · 03/03/2011 11:39

GeneralHaig. Have you ordered yet?

The ipad 2 is an incremental upgrade but certainly not a must have.

Cameras are completely overhyped. I've yet to see anyone willing to look like a complete knobhead and use their tablet in public to take photos/videos. And as for Facetime, i've had an iphone 4 for about 6 months now and used it....0 times. Despite having a few friends who I can Facetime with. You will understand after seeing yourself in the camera.

The CPU is faster which may be good if you want to play a lot of games. But if you just need to surf the web & check out facebook etc. then its no big deal.

Thinner. Yes, it will look fabulous. But in practice, the first thing you do after blowing £400 on it is to buy a nice leather case & a screen protector which make it no longer sexy & slim. So again no big deal.

Personally if it were my first ipad, i'd save the £100 and go for v1. I'm certainly won't be getting v2. (Disclaimer - I once said I'd never spend £430 on a bloody tablet! Grin)

geordieminx · 03/03/2011 11:50

I'm glad I didn't buy 3G one either(speaking as someone who designs 3G networks for a living).. That's what the iPhone is for Grin

MmeLindt · 03/03/2011 11:51

Agree with NiceGuy. Go for the iPad1.

The only thing that would have tempted me with the v2 is USB connection, which would have been handy. Since it does not have this, I don't see why you would wait to get the new one.

DH has Facetime on his iPhone and DS on iPod touch. We have used it once, to see if it works.

Niceguy2 · 03/03/2011 12:06

In fact....just seen this on the Apple refurb store:

Ipad v1 16GB Wifi for £289 link here

You get exactly the same warranty from Apple. At that price its a steal and you'd be bonkers to consider the v2.

RustyBear · 03/03/2011 12:10

I was planning to get an ipad2 and pass my current one on to DS, if it was significantly better than the first, but tbh, the only thing I really want from the ipad2 is the funky case! So I think I will hold out for no.3 - which is what I did with the iphone - I went from 3G to 4, missing out the 3GS

Lauri22 · 03/03/2011 12:18

How many people are using at home? Apparently thats the most popular place to use! Even though at home you probably have other ways to access the net or do those tasks, so perhaps it equates to a convenience store (with convenience store pricing) ..

MitchiestInge · 03/03/2011 12:23

I use at home though it is 3G I haven't organized a sim, imagine trauma of swapping sim from iPhone to iPad regularly?

Easier than using a laptop isn't it, or even more hard work, sitting at a desk top computer
