I managed to hold off getting an ipad v.1 although was v v tempted (lack of funds making the decision for me ...)

however, my birthday is coming up a few weeks after the British launch of ipad 2 and I still find myself drawn to one

so if you got one first time round are you still getting lots of use out of it? it's obviously too expensive to justify getting a toy which will only get used for the first few weeks/months

I'd shy away from the Duo mate.

The whole reason d'être for a tablet is that its instant on. Windows is not.

The duo is trying to give you the best of both worlds but ends up being a jack of all trades but a master of none.

Windows is simply not optimised to be a touch device.

My advice is that an ipad is not a replacement for a laptop/desktop. But an extension of it.

What about android tablets? Are android devices as secure as apple ones?

BadgersPaws · 22/03/2011 13:27

"Are android devices as secure as apple ones?"

I'd say no, but the main reason for that is that you can put anything that you like on them without needing the provider to approve it. What you find on the internet and install could be up to all sorts of "bad" things.

As an example of this AVG now offer an anti-virus product for Android.

And that to me is the difference between Android and Apple's iOS devices.

Apple lock you in but offer you security.

Android gives you freedom but you need to be a bit careful.

Niceguy2 · 22/03/2011 13:43

Agree with badgers on the security.

But more importantly than security, Android tablets right now simply are not mature.

They've shoehorned v2.2 onto tablets and frankly it sucks compared to Apple. The hardware also sucks. The Galaxy tab is too small. Are you a phone? Are you a tablet? What are you dammit!??!! The Advent Vega ticks the boxes but the screen is useless.

Version 3.0 looks better but the flagship model, the Motorola Xoom is reported to suffer from stablity problems meaning it randomly just crashes. Oh and its more than the ipad2.

So when you take all that into account, why would you buy Android?

I use mine most days, although it is def not a replacement for my laptop. I am typing from my laptop right now as have it own for doing some school work.

Will the 3g I pad work in a home that does not have wifi. I cant get my wifi to work so just use the cables.

Niceguy2 · 25/03/2011 23:19

Only if you have a 3G SIM card installed, on a data tariff and live in a decent 3G area.

Personally I wouldn't bother with 3G for all except light use.

There's no way to plug a network cable into your ipad. You may want to get another router (£30-£40) which wifi works on. Given a £400 spend, another £40 to get wifi isn't a big deal.
