Which roses do you have?

I have Desdemona and St Ethelburga (pictured) which I love.
I like lovely smelling roses and am planning on buying Charles Darwin (lemon coloured) Gabriel Oak (dark pink) and Tuscany, an old rose from the 16th century.

So many. I keep adding to my collection. Didn't used to like them, but now have loads, maybe it's an age thing!!

So I have lots of David Austin old English roses, big full petals, very scented. Some "wild" roses, the basic single petal type, that smell amazing, but only flower once. I quite like those, very big and bushy too. A couple of massive climbers. Recently added some standards, or people have given me some. I have a white/pink area, a red area, an orange and yellow area.

Those are lovely. I'm in my 50s and never had a single rose until about 5 years ago. Now I'm obsessed.

What's the yellow one?

Hebe's Lip,
Glorie do Dijon,
Rosa Filipes Kiftsgate (don't plant it anywhere it can't cover a building),
Warm Welcome

and a white rose with clusters of tiny flowers, that was here when I arrived and the bees love.

I brought Minerva this year, lovely deep purple blooms and beautiful, strong scent. I also have Simply The Best which is an orange bloom with medium scent but quite sweet.

Billybagpuss · 08/10/2024 13:43

Desdemona, boscobel, Roald Dahl, compassion, grace and Silas marner.

I have Gabriel Oak in my front garden, and Bathsheba Everdene in the back. I also have some other tones I have no idea of the name- one red, one white. And some miniature roses from Waitrose which I have been very keen on this year. Don't know how they overwinter, though.

KnittedCardi · 08/10/2024 13:53

@PinkYarrow The yellow is Golden Celebration. The smell is amazing

everywhichway · 08/10/2024 13:56

Gertrude Jekyll. Fabulous old rose fragrance.

KnittedCardi · 08/10/2024 13:57

This one is funky!

I’ve just ordered my first rose. I’ve gone for Olivia Rose Austin.

I am going to have a small gap between my greenhouse, and garage wall, so am contemplating a climbing rose there, but not sure if it’s practical!

AnnaMagnani · 08/10/2024 13:59

I have loads of Wildeve and then a Gabriel Oak in a pot.

Plus 3 old roses which mainly just disseminate blackspot.

I love that you've got both of them. I love that book.

I have quite a few, but my favourites are Emily Gray, an apricot rose with a fresh apple smell, Rosa glauca, with red stems, blue-green leaves, single pink flowers and lots of hips, sweet briars, whose foliage smells of apples especially after rain, a pink moss rose - “david Austin style” flower with green sepals which look like moss or lichen, Alistair Stella Gray, another apricot coloured rose which is a vigorous rambler.

PatsyPatsysaid · 08/10/2024 19:51

Arthur Bell - divine

Rowgtfc72 · 08/10/2024 19:56

Lots of Superstar, Peace, Queen Elizabeth, Iceberg,Blue moon, a beautiful orange one I can't for the life of me remember the name of and a deep red one I 'borrowed ' out of my neighbours garden when she died.
I inherited all but the orange one, blue moon and iceberg from my dad.
I.also have a beautiful pink rose that is very different to my other roses but no idea what it is.
If you want scent, you want Blue moon.

Gertrude Jekyll, Ancient Mariner, Warm Wishes and Comte de Chambord.

I'm at the garden centre Friday and as it is my birthday next week and it's a huge one, I'm going to head for the David Austin section to see what they have.

Any suggestions welcome, must be fragrant though. 😄

How fast and crazily does Kiftsgate grow? I have an awful lot of walls, including a 30-foot high cement-clad cliff face at the back of the garden…

Lots-
lady gardener
kew gardens (hedge)
clare austin
Generous gardener
long hedge of Rosa rugosa
golden wedding
Seven others which I don’t have names for

Gabriel Oak is amazing, but Charles Darwin is quite disappointing. If you want a yellow rose the poets wife is so, so much better - it’s smells of lemons, it’s one of my favourites. I do have quite a few David Austins, but also Mme le gras de st germain which is an old rose, Alberic barbier which is a good rambler and reine de violette which is a dark pink/purple and nearly thornless with a good scent.

Bignanna · 08/10/2024 21:02

Arthur Rose Belle- a lovely gold rose, which, as it ages turns pink on the edges. Has a slight perfume and flowers gloriously every year.

I love that you've got both of them. I love that book.

I grew up by Dorchester. Hardy indoctrination is strong...

WithASpider · 08/10/2024 21:17

I have a few in my tiny garden - a bright yellow in a dull spot, a crazy pink climbing rose which smells lovely, one called Raspberry Ripple (pink striped petals) and Double Delight (red outer, yellow inner and smells divine!).

I've just asked DH for Blue Moon for Christmas.

Thanks. I'm looking for a lemon coloured rose rather than bright yellow really. Maybe vanessa bell or something. Does Charles Darwin not bloom very well?

Lovely. We went to Dorset for our holiday this year and planning to go back next year.
