Which roses do you have?

I have Desdemona and St Ethelburga (pictured) which I love.
I like lovely smelling roses and am planning on buying Charles Darwin (lemon coloured) Gabriel Oak (dark pink) and Tuscany, an old rose from the 16th century.

I have a few in my tiny garden - a bright yellow in a dull spot, a crazy pink climbing rose which smells lovely, one called Raspberry Ripple (pink striped petals) and Double Delight (red outer, yellow inner and smells divine!).

I've just asked DH for Blue Moon for Christmas.

That's lovely. I saw a similar one called Ferdinand Pichard in Regents Park rose garden and really liked it.

I remember going to a garden centre as a child in the 70s and looking through a rose catalogue and Blue Moon being my favourite one in the book.

Lots of Superstar, Peace, Queen Elizabeth, Iceberg,Blue moon, a beautiful orange one I can't for the life of me remember the name of and a deep red one I 'borrowed ' out of my neighbours garden when she died.
I inherited all but the orange one, blue moon and iceberg from my dad.
I.also have a beautiful pink rose that is very different to my other roses but no idea what it is.
If you want scent, you want Blue moon.

I love the last one with the pink edges

Gertrude Jekyll, Ancient Mariner, Warm Wishes and Comte de Chambord.

I'm at the garden centre Friday and as it is my birthday next week and it's a huge one, I'm going to head for the David Austin section to see what they have.

Any suggestions welcome, must be fragrant though. 😄

Happy Birthday for next week. I like both of mine from my first post. St E isn't David Austin but it smells gorgeous

Thanks. I'm looking for a lemon coloured rose rather than bright yellow really. Maybe vanessa bell or something. Does Charles Darwin not bloom very well?

I’d definitely try Vanessa Bell. Charles Darwin doesn’t bloom very well and as the booms fade they kind of go brown round the edges and the whole flower looks like crumpled up old paper. I was convinced I was going to love it, so was quite disappointed.

How fast and crazily does Kiftsgate grow? I have an awful lot of walls, including a 30-foot high cement-clad cliff face at the back of the garden…

Takes a year or two to establish but then goes fast. It would do well on the cliff face but might need support - its forte is climbing trees.

I wouldn’t risk it on a smaller wall, nor Rambling Rector.

If you can’t provide support on the cliff face, you’d be better with a self-clinger like Virginia Creeper or Boston Ivy - no obvious flowers, but stunning in autumn.

I had a south-facing thirty foot wide wall with a chain link fence on top, backing onto an industrial park. Kiftsgate covered it in three years 🤗 I pruned it back to keep it tidy, in the autumn after flowering. That was in London so the soil was ordinary soil mixed with a bit of clay.

It was lovely.

When I moved I took a cutting which then covered my sister's garage in Suffolk, so it seems happy in different soils.

EBearhug · 09/10/2024 09:29

Mum had Kiftsgate on chalky soil. It was in a big garden, with trees, but if you only have a small space, don't touch ot. It's quite a thorny one, as I remember, too.

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/10/2024 09:29

I had a south-facing thirty foot wide wall with a chain link fence on top, backing onto an industrial park. But how high was your wall and fence combination?

PinkYarrow · 09/10/2024 10:28

Behind my back fence is a concrete wall about 8 foot with a wooden fence on top belonging to a train station. I originally grew Virginia creeper up it but in winter it didn't look great when it lost its leaves. I then tried gold and green variegated ivy. (Not wild ivy which is invasive.) It looks nice all year round and the birds love hiding in it. A lot of it has lost the gold and gone plain green, but still nice.

@PinkYarrow the pinky yellow one is Peace. It was my dad's favourite. They come through as yellow and then turn pink.

It’s worth a visit @PinkYarrow They also run rose pruning courses in the winter if you get really rose obsessed.
Here are a couple of my favourite both apricot coloured. Buff Beauty with clusters of smaller flowers on a medium sized spreading bush and Roald Dahl which is a more compact plant that keeps on flowering.

Which roses do you have?

Yes, I’ve got a buff beauty. Struggling a bit in the shade now the trees have got larger.

Buff Beauty

a red rose, possibly Frensham

species and near-species

a pink R. spinosissima
Sweet briar, Lady Penzance I think
R rugosa white
R rugosa pink
R rugosa dark pink
a wild rose, dark pink
R. moyesii (for its hips)
R. glauca
R. sericea pteracantha (for its big flat translucent red thorns)

Thank you! I will have to put something on the cliff face… I planted Rambling Rector this year on a different wall, also with plenty of space to do its thing. Only a single blossom, though…

I have saved a few posts from this thread and looking forward to getting started on my rose journey!

It took several years before my Kiftsgate bloomed, by which time it had consumed a hawthorn, several hollies, most of a lime tree and part of my neighbour’s garden. So have patience!

My neighbour had a Rambling Rector cascading down an old apple tree. In summer both rose and apple were hidden by the mass of flowers

TentEntWenTyfOur · 11/10/2024 14:13

We have Iceberg, Queen Elizabeth and City of Leeds, none of which have done very well this year.

Hotafternoon · 11/10/2024 15:48

I've been to the garden centre and my lovely best friend bought me Gabriel Oak rose and a lovely white dwarf rhododendron for my enormous birthday next week.

I bought a beautiful huge blue ceramic pot that was half price for the rose to go in on the patio.😁

Can't wait for next summer to see the flowers on the rose.
