BTEC/T level/other vocational 25/26 - part 2

New thread for those of us with DC doing vocational courses (and for those with DC looking for an alternative to A levels next year and looking for advice).

My DC is currently doing a level 3 extended diploma. He struggled academically at school and was pretty miserable in year 11. With a lot of hard work he got the grades needed for the level 3 BTEC and is now thriving at college.

I kind of understand this sort of thing at primary school, even lower secondary, but near adults shouldn't be asked to sacrifice themselves in this way for others.
Helping others out, yes, but only if they want to!
This wouldn't happen in a workplace (or to a man) so it shouldn't happen at college.

(I used to be moved at school to sit between noisy kids cos I was quiet, it still annoys me!)

My view exactly.
Dd met with HofF and was asked to "try it" for 2 weeks!
Nope.
So, I've spent the afternoon trying to speak to someone 🙄
Finally got a call back, and dd is back in the original group.
Sigh.

It’s should not fall into one individual to “ pull the others up”!!!! Taking the proverbial! Not ok!! ( my DS HATE my saying that!! “ Mum says “ it’s SO NOT OK”!!!!” Intonating me! Which just makes me say it even more! In context, of course!!

So...
The staff member I spoke to had no idea why dd wasn't contacted re: move, nor why another student was moved back straight away, nor why she was told the other group needed her "to make it more social" 🤷‍♀️
I just said that I know that the move wasn't in any way malicious, but pointed out that, at 17, it made dd very confused/upset.
I'm really cross about the "try it for 2 weeks" ploy, too 😡

Oh, RIGHT?!!!! Absolutely!!! Imagine it being tried with a bloke!!!?! No. Just wouldn’t happen.

Reminds me of Yr 7, and out of going from a school of 45 to a school of 1450 ish, DS ended up in a class with his bully since Reception. Couldn’t make that up. She picked up where she had left off….. physical and mental abuse restarted. She “ couldn’t be moved as in the same bubble”!
🙀🤬…. Anyway. Oh! Reminds me! A friend of mine randomly overheard a guy talking to his mate in M&S foothall about how his children were doing … guy was from out of town, so was just repeating his mate, but was saying how his DS was having a “ really shit time because of an utter bullying 🧙 called “Ivy Witchface”.. who has form for it”!! It made me horribly relieved but so sad in equal measure. Relief that my upset over the years wasn’t all in my head ( when telling my friend), but so sad yet another lovely lad has been her victim! Hopefully he gets well away from her, too! Sorry!! Tangent!!!

Woohoo she got a D for first year! I'm so proud and pleased for her. :)

She is enjoying being back at college, already working away at her first project for this year with deadline at the end of the month! Still trying to get my head around this being her final year and she will be turning 18 in a few months time!!

Well...first "proper" day back at college for dd tomorrow.
She's really looking forward to it, but also anxious.
She's finished the summer extension project.
It'll be half term before we know it! 😄

How's everyone doing?
We are having a bit of an issue with attendance. "we're not really doing much yet" and deciding to do the work at home instead of from college.
Which might be fine if agreed but I get messages every few days from college to say he has unauthorised absence.

Besides that it's ok. He likes (doesn't love) the course but no real idea what he wants to do next year. I think he should be thinking about that but all he is thinking about is going to the gym, etc!

Went in happily this morning though and day off tomorrow so I don't have to hassle him again until Wednesday.

Dd has been ill since last week so not going in today. Hopefully back to normal tomorrow

Afternoon all!

Well, that was a bit of a rubbish week or so, I went to take DS20 back to Scotland to settle in his flat for Year 2, and Mum got taken to A&E at her house, so I had to divert down to the north west for her ( had MRI scans.. long story.. just waiting for confirmation of the suspected spinal diagnosis ).. but! I’m back home now and DS has finally started his Year 2! I think he had a very late starting date!

It appears he is only in Wed/Thursday and Friday, and is going to start volunteering tomorrow at a homeless charity in his college town, which I’m really proud of him for. However….given he doesn’t “ pot wash” ( oooh, I HATE that term!) at home ( probably as I’m a massive germaphobe and shove everything in the dishwasher..🙄😈🙀 🦠 😹!), I’ll be interested to see how that goes, if that’s on the agenda at some point!

His GF left officially last year, as was year above, but is back volunteering on the same course… I hope it doesn’t mean he doesn’t open himself up to new friendships, though. It’s a wait and see, I guess! ( and a bad double negative ! I have come home to a massive pile of work and other organisational stuff to catch up on🤯),

@LarkspurLane we have similar.
They seem to be incredibly snail pace - DD has already finished stuff that doesn't need to be handed in until November, and is bored.
Timetable is also ridiculous - huge gaps and then 5 hours back to back.

Roll on July...

She's better than she was, but quite unwell. She's 18 this weekend, too! 😬

Yeah. Dd has finished the summer assignment some haven't started yet...

@Raven08 Hope your DD feels much better soon and has a brilliant birthday.

My DD has a deadline at the end of the month but has realised that she doesn't have many days in college before then (how is the end of September next week!?) so she is talking about going in early and possibly staying late on her shorter days (I think first and last period are officially "study periods" anyway, some people have GCSE resit classes). She does a lot at home but there is some stuff she can only do at college.

She is feeling a bit overwhelmed by the UCAS stuff, not helped by the fact that the teacher who is supposed to be helping with it has been off sick. Hopefully he will return soon and she will be a bit calmer about it.
