BTEC/T level/other vocational 25/26 - part 2

New thread for those of us with DC doing vocational courses (and for those with DC looking for an alternative to A levels next year and looking for advice).

My DC is currently doing a level 3 extended diploma. He struggled academically at school and was pretty miserable in year 11. With a lot of hard work he got the grades needed for the level 3 BTEC and is now thriving at college.

@Hopeforb Finding places to resit science could be hard, partly due to the experiments.
However if you ask your local Home Ed community they may have suggestions.

For what its worth, my suggestion would be to look at iGCSE as the required practical element may be less, and also consider picking a Single science rather than trying to redo combined.

For IT, physics may be most aligned but obviously also has higher maths content.

Did he have an EHCP? If so have you looked into Supported Internships? I wonder whether work experience may be more beneficial than more GCSEs at this time?

Hopeforb · 19/08/2026 08:09

@TeenToTwenties unfortunately DC hasnt got EHCP - secondary school wasnt supportive and said DC doesn't need it !! During college years DC was reluctant. I am still trying to convince DC.

iGCSE especially with Physics is a great suggestion but as you said Maths is needed so for now we will look for Maths.

DC has good record of work experience for last three years. At present working in a paid part- time job in supermarket.

All the best to those getting GCSE results this week. Still waiting to hear DD's first year result here! Also waiting to hear which days she will be in college next year as it may change.

Looking forward she has booked three university open days in October and November which makes it feel very close!

Hi, yes DC missed 2 points for grade 4 in one of the Combined Science paper. English was grade 4 so it was a relief. We are looking for Core Maths provider as it seems very practical or we might go online. For Science, we are still not sure but think Maths is more important. 🤞

Oh, that’s truly annoying! 2 points! And, they worked so hard to get close!! Yes, I see what you mean about Maths. I think there have been some good suggestions for while your DC is awaiting an apprenticeship… 🤞.. Have they said what their preference is?

It’s a veritable wait and see!! I will report back, once I find out myself!!

Thank you! X

GOOD LUCK TO ALL GCSE people!!! 🍀🤞🙏🍀🤞🙏🍀

Ooooh good luck with her results!! When do you think you’ll get them? But, great news on the Uni days!! That’s so cool!

Ditto as to EHCP. DS has a really early diagnosis of ASD and ADHD ( aged 6 ish), but primary was appallingly unsupportive and his secondary was convinced his personal plan was sufficient blah blah…. 🙄

Good luck today. And Happy Birthday!
You are so supportive to others on this thread, I hope DS gets what he needs.

(And if he doesn't, it sounds like he's had a good year at college and there will be other ways)

Thank you!!!! 🌟💖🌟!!!

I am sat outside his college waiting and it’s got to be half an hour now!!! I’m facing the gates, so will tell from his face! It’s so weird watching everyone! Traumatising! But, super sweet when someone legs it’s past, waving their certificates and in tears with happiness!!

I hope everyone is getting the results they hoped for!!! 🍀🙏🤞🍀

@Sisublondie Congratulations.... you bought tears in my eyes. Can relate to these feelings!

Sisublondie · 21/08/2026 12:19

Hey guys!!!!!!! I’m so sorry I disappeared off!! I dropped DS off for a celebratory lunch with his GF, rushed home to town we live in to pick DS19 up to go for our joint birthday lunch ( me yesterday, him today….. Oh!! DS20 now!!!!), then back to college town, picked DS up, home to chat with Mum on phone, then off out with DSs and DH for Thai! Then up at 5am to get DS20 (!!🙀🙀🙀😹!) off to Scotland for birthday weekend and flat hunt (🤞) as term start looming, so I’m now processing the amazing-ness of yesterday!!!!! ( it’s funny, I almost feel sorry for the “straight A ( as was, back in the day!)” students! So many achievements all in one go! ( “ did I pass 1, or 12?!”).. kidding!!)…

He called when I was sat waiting… asked me to pop in with his GP details (so, I thought, either he’s had a weird accident, or he’s enrolling for second year?!)), I was luckily right outside so legged it in past security, saw DS faffing with forms, I answered his GP details ( it’s funny, his nominated doctors name is really distinctive, and he always forgets it! ), then dared to say “ Well”…? And, he looks at me and there is a long pause..and, he goes…( obviously buoyed with relief!) “ Well, I passed, of course, cause I’m doing the forms”…….. my face lit up and I dared to ask what grade ( not that it mattered in the slightest!!) … he replies” Well, duh, 4, OF COURSE! This time it was a couple of marks in the right direction”!!!!!!!!

He passed by literally 2 marks!!! I have never been so grateful or thankful!! He could never have got through or tried to pass a third time. 🌟💖🌟💖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟…… Whooo Hooooooo!! ( still tickles me, @Raven08!!)….

Anyway!!!!! I’m so sorry to selfishly boast about DS!!! How are we all?! xx

Sisublondie · 21/08/2026 12:20

*.. “ pass 11, or 12…”!! 🙄😹…….

Only 21% of students passed the resit - which is something really shocking.

Your DS can be really proud! (And I'm guessing you're not tempted to get a re-mark!!)

So onwards to Y2 with a clean slate!
