I've just realised that the year 12 2023/2024 thread is full - oops! - last message on 16 August - don't know if someone started another continuation thread but I can't see it. This coming year DS1 does A levels and university applications, DS2 will be in his GCSE year.

If there is a thread already started please let me know.

1st exam for ds this afternoon too, Edexcel politics. He was a bit anxious but not too bad. Fingers crossed for all of today’s candidates

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 20/05/2025 11:55

Good luck to everyone at the start of the exam journey.

autumndays13 · 20/05/2025 20:08

First exam (further maths edexcel) done. DD, who is normally quite calm and composed, was very nervous beforehand. Seemed pretty happy with how it went so that’s a huge relief. Hope it’s all gone okay for others with exams today. Next one is Thursday.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 20/05/2025 20:23

Glad it went and DD was happy with how it went @autumndays13

DS2 felt FM went well, a couple of questions had bits he struggled with, but he went back and felt he'd maybe get a couple of points for what he managed on one.

I'm pleased he was able to do that; the going back and trying a bit more, rather than spiralling into an anxious state.

So whatever the results may be, he's really come along way since GCSEs.

Hope all our young people (and their families) are doing OK.

autumndays13 · 20/05/2025 20:54

Well done to your DS too. Sounds v similar to my DD’s views on it - a couple where she had to go back and try a few different things. Fingers crossed Thursday’s paper goes ok x

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 20/05/2025 20:54

My DD is a little worried for tomorrow. Apparently the Classics and Economics paper 2’s have been hard so she’s expecting the worse for Psych tomorrow

Changes17 · 20/05/2025 22:16

DS reasonably pleased with FM, though knows he made some mistakes. I think it’s added motivation for the other papers and he’s planning what to work on tomorrow. Next paper Thursday.

autumndays13 · 21/05/2025 07:16

Good luck to your DD today @Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky
and glad to hear FM went ok @Changes17 and @PennywisePoundFoolish

Tiggerspal · 21/05/2025 14:04

DC had edexcel Politics yesterday and it was awful, really niche questions and 2 girls were in tears!

Its so hard trying to bolster them back up again for the next ones isn't it?

Changes17 · 21/05/2025 14:33

Well, I suppose the big upside is that they never have to do that paper again, @Tiggerspal. Plus if they found it hard, no doubt others will too and the grade boundaries might be a bit lower.

It is hard, but they just need to regroup, move on and think about their next paper.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 21/05/2025 15:53

I can't believe that DD is half way through her exams now (over halfway if you count the Eng NEA). She seems to have picked up a virus thing (probably after celebrating a friend's 18th in 'Spoons on Friday) which is making her achy, thankfully she had an early night and feels a bit better today. One more exam and then half term thank god. Good luck to you all (and your kids!). It seems almost laid back compared to GCSEs despite the fact that they're more important for most.

BonjourCrisette · 21/05/2025 18:54

It's nice having plenty of gaps between the exams so they don't always have to be thinking ahead and working out when they can fit the work in!

jamimmi · 21/05/2025 20:44

Sounds like they are all going OK. Dd doesn't start till after half term and final week is 4 in a week. The joys of science subjects and maths! It will be a bit like GCSE'S but it's.only 2.5 weeks, and one exam a day. She's more frustrated she can't go clubbing with the library gang on Friday as she's not 18 til july

Monstermunchy · 21/05/2025 22:24

Not too many gaps here this week - dc has had 2 today and 1 tomorrow! Still, onwards and upwards, crossing them off one by one!

Hope all our dc’s are doing ok!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 21/05/2025 23:07

DS2 has been really grumpy this afternoon, no exam today though. It's my MILs funeral tomorrow and he can't go because he has an exam. But he says it's not that, he's just tired. He's done a decent reenactment of The Hungry Caterpillar tonight so I'll be doing a quick dash to the shops in the morning!

@jamimmi oh that's a shame about clubbing, has DD got something planned for her 18th?

@Sweetpeasaremadeforbees I hope DD is feeling better after a good sleep, and whatever she has is short-lived

DS2 turns 18 the day after his 6th Form leavers do. He's always been on the periphery of social groups at school and he's not had any kind of birthday activity since primary. (Apart from just with immediate family). I was toying with arranging a cake to have at the 6th form do, but there's 50 going, so it would be quite expensive. I need to make a decision soon

jamimmi · 21/05/2025 23:19

@PennywisePoundFoolish oh I am sorry poor you and poor.son, that can't be easy. Do college know can hopefully support & speak to exam boards.
Dd does.have plan for her birthday, small party here the weekend before as some other friends not quite 18 and clubbing after her Monday birthday! She was a bit of a socal hermit at secondary school but found her tribe at 6th form and hopefully she will at lancaster too!

HippyChickMama · 22/05/2025 15:15

No exam here today, ds has had his last teaching day at college and has his history exam tomorrow. He’s a bit nervous about history, he hasn’t been too anxious about the others, he’s exhausted though, it seems to have worn him out

PennywisePoundFoolish · 22/05/2025 16:41

@jamimmi thanks. That's lovely to hear DD has such a full social life now

DS2 seems to be coping ok and the funeral went as well as these things can.

I'm hoping DS2 finds his tribe at university. He's a lovely young man, but very shy (also autistic) and I am concerned he'll be socially isolated.

He said the exam went well. He was writing equations as he casually strolled out to my car, whilst I had to drive around 3 times due to the nightmare parking?!? I plastered on a smile but it was a test of my chill!

Next exam is 4th June, last 6th form assembly tomorrow. We were asked to send in a baby or first day of school photo and write a little something. I hope he's not too embarrassed

@HippyChickMama I hope DS gets a good night's sleep and the exam goes well tomorrow.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 22/05/2025 18:05

Well my dd managed second English exam. She was worried about this one - in tears on way to school. Many of her friends hadn’t come in today and the one that did as she also had English also has anxiety - so they both sat there until the exam revving themselves up with no one to talk them down! She said she was in tears in exam hall waiting for paper to start and there was a load of y11 sitting something else around her probably wondering what was going on.

After that the actual paper was much better than she expected so was happy afterwards.

Shes taking her younger sister to see Mean Girls tonight (I say that fingers crossed as she just under 18 so technically she shouldn’t but hoping they don’t ask to check her age!)

glad the funeral went ok @PennywisePoundFoolish

Good luck for everyone with exams tomorrow.

Changes17 · 22/05/2025 18:18

Also glad the funeral went OK, @PennywisePoundFoolish.

Also good to hear DC are getting into the swing of the exams. DS says FM paper 2 went well. I think the papers he was most concerned about are out of the way now. Physics tomorrow morning - then a break over half-term.

mumonthehill · 22/05/2025 18:40

Ds said geography went ok but not mentioned biology! He has not come home yet as gone straight to the beach for a swim. I feel better now we are in the swing of it

BonjourCrisette · 22/05/2025 20:57

Second English exam done here. DD very pleased with the Ant and Cleo question, less so with Duchess of Malfi/Streetcar. But she thinks it went OK mostly. She is having a ball at the moment, revising at school with friends in the day and going out a lot in the evenings. It's nice to see her finding time to relax as well as work. Next exam on the 2nd of June (Drama) so plenty of time to revise before that.

I am glad the funeral was OK, @PennywisePoundFoolish.

@Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky - your DD is doing so well to be getting on with everything.

HippyChickMama · 23/05/2025 12:45

Ds has just messaged to say he thinks the history exam went well. He said the first question was a bit unexpected but the other two were ones he’d practised before and completely expected. That was OCR history if anyone else’s dc had that today

Changes17 · 23/05/2025 12:50

Three down, seven to go after half term. Today’s exam was in a hot room with no one else doing the same subject and the exam paper arrived late. Apart from that, seemed to go well.

Think that would have thrown me, but DS seems to have taken it in his stride.

Singchem · 23/05/2025 14:47

DC1 had their very first A level today - physics - it’s been such a long wait whilst all their friends got started.
Now a break for half term before the rest of the exams take place!
