I've just realised that the year 12 2023/2024 thread is full - oops! - last message on 16 August - don't know if someone started another continuation thread but I can't see it. This coming year DS1 does A levels and university applications, DS2 will be in his GCSE year.

If there is a thread already started please let me know.

So sorry @PennywisePoundFoolish . Hope those going to Durham enjoy it.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 26/04/2025 09:58

Well my DD is not coping as well as I thought she was. She’s been feeling low level sick for a month or so and been sick couple of times.

we did an online gp appointment this morning via my work Bupa and they have said it’s probably stress related and referring her for some CBT sessions.

think she’s also worried about staring uni as well. She a late birthday so will just be 2 weeks turned 18 when she goes.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 26/04/2025 10:00

Sorry about that news @PennywisePoundFoolish

PennywisePoundFoolish · 27/04/2025 07:22

Thanks for the kind messages about my MIL Flowers

Visit to Durham done, DS2 has decided on Bath with Exeter as his insurance choice.

@Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky, sorry your DD is struggling atm. It's a completely understandable way to feel and hopefully the CBT is effective.

DS2 decided to come off his antidepressants a couple of months ago, and couldn't be convinced by the psychiatrist (or me) to wait until after he'd finished his exams. He seems OK so I'm hoping he gets through these next months without crashing

Changes17 · 27/04/2025 10:25

Also visited Durham. It’s lovely but DS is currently thinking the Sheffield course better reflects his interests. I’m hoping that’s not just because the Sheffield offer is lower!

Changes17 · 27/04/2025 10:30

It is a stressful time - not too long to go now though. Feels important to have some downtime amid the work.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 27/04/2025 10:58

@changes DS2 prefers the course at Bath over Durham and he needs the same grades for both. He wasn't well when he visited Dunham but hopefully that didn't cloud things. I'm secretly relieved he's chosen Bath but generally just happy he's going to any university as it's been a rough road (fingers crossed)

Changes17 · 27/04/2025 11:27

@PennywisePoundFoolish Sheffield has the advantage of being two hours closer than Durham, is possibly a cheaper city to live in and definitely a more lively one.
Wasn’t relishing the idea of a five hour drive on moving in day! The insurance would be Liverpool or Newcastle.
I do worry DS is playing it safe, academically, though. However, it’s his choice and if he’ll be happier there he’ll probably do better.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 27/04/2025 14:56

@Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky sorry to hear that your DD is struggling at the moment. It's a super stressful time, and I definitely think that it's worth seeing if CBT can help.

DC1 has her Spanish speaking exam tomorrow - this will be her second A level paper. This probably her least favourite bit of Spanish, so at least it will be out of the way. UCAS all submitted - first choice is a 3 hr drive south, second is 4hrs north, so I don't think she'll be bringing her washing home very often.

Sheffield will definitely be cheaper ! However I got a shock at the cost of accommodation for year 1.
What course is he looking at ?

PennywisePoundFoolish · 27/04/2025 16:52

Bath and Exeter are a little closer to us than Durham, but still over 3 hours. I am nervous about accommodation and how he'll cope, but he's got autistic optimism going on so I'm treading carefully.

Step 1 will be making sure he applies as soon as he can, he's a little prone to leaving things until the last minute

Changes17 · 27/04/2025 17:34

@NCTDN He’s doing physics. Yes, accommodation is going to be more expensive than last year - I think by about 15% on the previous year.

Changes17 · 05/05/2025 09:15

DS has now firmed Sheffield (insurance Liverpool) and applied for student finance. Just exams to think about now - and they are coming up quickly, with the first one on May 20. Hope all DC are doing OK.

Monstermunchy · 05/05/2025 13:23

Same two in the same order for my dc @Changes17 😊 but first exam on the 13th… it’s getting close for them all now

Changes17 · 05/05/2025 14:04

Good luck to all DC for their exams!

What is your DC going to be studying, @Monstermunchy - and have they chosen accommodation yet? All the best to them for May 13.

mumonthehill · 05/05/2025 16:22

All beginning to feel very real!! We have biology practical on Wednesday!

jamimmi · 05/05/2025 16:32

Studying hard here but no exams till the 4th June then 2 to 4 per week for 3 weeks till the 20th Just trying to get her to pace herself as many friends start and finish much sooner. Science practical exams all done weeks ago. Good luck.to them all.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 05/05/2025 16:48

yes - good luck to all with imminent exams! It feels like quite a full-on couple of years, and they've all done really well to get this far. Sending good wishes to all, but especially those who have had extra struggles to manage Flowers

Yes accommodation sorted for both - well, preferences stated for Liverpool - and they have an offer for the MPlan.
What about yours?

Changes17 · 06/05/2025 08:23

Only firmed at the weekend, @Monstermunchy so all that still needs doing. I imagine it’ll be at the weekend.

BonjourCrisette · 06/05/2025 17:50

DD just had her French oral and is so happy to have it out of the way. Wishing everyone the very best of luck for all the exams!

Pollyanna8234 · 06/05/2025 21:51

DS has his Spanish oral tomorrow and is both dreading it and looking forward to the feeling of relief once it's over

BonjourCrisette · 07/05/2025 00:01

Very best of luck to him!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 07/05/2025 09:08
