I've just realised that the year 12 2023/2024 thread is full - oops! - last message on 16 August - don't know if someone started another continuation thread but I can't see it. This coming year DS1 does A levels and university applications, DS2 will be in his GCSE year.

If there is a thread already started please let me know.

I am still trying to get my head around that this is the last school Christmas holidays we will ever have!! Ds our youngest so feels like an end of an era really. Hope everyone has a lovely Christmas.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 23/12/2024 17:32

@halloween67 humanties joint honours
@UnimaginableWindBird two coursework subjects must be very demanding. And your DD must be very organised! DC1 has one coursework subject (25% portfolio, 35% controlled assessment, 40% exam), and that seems like more than enough...
@mumonthehill the "lasts" are very poignant, aren't they? We have a younger DC but she is likely to take a very different path indeed to DC1, and so I think lots of things at sixth form are probably firsts and lasts all at once.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 23/12/2024 18:11

Sam here @TheTurn0fTheScrew

My youngest is Y9 and doing child development gcse which she loves (first school topic she's really been enthusiastic about)

She currently wants to work in childcare so I can see her going the college / apprenticeship route not 6th form.

As I will be 56 before oldest finishes uni I cannot say that's not a little bit of a relief that I won't have to go through it again a year after that (there is a 4 yr gap)

mumonthehill · 02/01/2025 11:04

Happy new year all!!

Changes17 · 02/01/2025 11:18

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a good break ahead of what feels like a big year ahead.

DS took the first week of the holiday off but has started getting down to some past papers over the last couple of days.

BonjourCrisette · 02/01/2025 22:36

Happy New Year, everyone!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 05/01/2025 15:32

Happy New Year! Hope all the DC have had a bit of a balance of rest and productivity.

Not sure if anyone else has a DC doing music A level? DC1 is currently panic-composing, as a draft of one of the set compositions needs to be in this week. Mocks at the end of January, and no signs of revision as yet...

MotherOfCatBoy · 09/01/2025 21:45

UCAS form finally submitted today. Now we’ll see what happens, although DS’s top choice, Imperial, won’t reply for a while I’m sure.

mumonthehill · 10/01/2025 14:52

@MotherOfCatBoy that's good news. Fingers crossed. We are bracing for mocks and then I think choices will be made after we get results.

Changes17 · 10/01/2025 14:54

Good to hear about all of the offers being made. Mocks here next week as well which will help to clarify things. DS is off to an offer holders day in Sheffield in March.

NotLinkingMyChildrenInThreads · 10/01/2025 21:35

All 5 offers in now and ucas finalised with first and second choices. Both unis booked for the offer holder days……and it’s very strange to think that by the end of the year I’ll have 2 children in uni and only 1 at home.
The start of the year always goes by so quickly for me, I seem to blink and it’s March every time.

mumonthehill · 13/01/2025 19:25

DS said today that there are still quite a number in his year that have not got their forms into school yet so are cutting it very fine. I think he might be a bit pleased I was such a nag now!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 14/01/2025 12:12

nice surprise text from DC1 - offer in from Oxford. Lovely to have, will obviously create a bit of pressure regarding grades though.

Congratulations to your DC1 @TheTurn0fTheScrew ! What subject are they doing?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 14/01/2025 13:04

Thanks 😊. It's a humanities joint honours course - not a very popular one which I'm sure helped. Lots of work still to do to get there though.

mumonthehill · 14/01/2025 13:11

Oh congratulations!!! That is so exciting

Changes17 · 14/01/2025 13:12

All the best to them!

Getting offers certainly helps with the motivation for the work that all of our DC will need to do in the next four (?) months or so.

NotLinkingMyChildrenInThreads · 14/01/2025 15:42

DD had 2 friends today get offers in from Oxford and she is pleased for them. Her big brother is there though and she’s seen just how much work he’s had to do, it put her off applying! He does, however, love it and would not wish to study anywhere else.
Congratulatikns @TheTurn0fTheScrew

MoFoFlo · 15/01/2025 17:47

Congrats to your DC @TheTurn0fTheScrew

DD had two exams for Ctec business last week which count towards her final grade. Very happy with how they went. Still struggling with ALevel psychology but I’m hoping that she should be able to spend extra time revising for the summer exams as her other subjects will be pretty much done by Easter.

She’s still not 100% sure about university but has offers from all her choices. She’s applied for an apprenticeship that would be amazing opportunity for her but highly competitive.

legosnowqueen · 18/01/2025 09:09

Great to see the offers rolling in. Congratulations @TheTurn0fTheScrew - what amazing news!

Changes17 · 18/01/2025 09:57

Great to be getting actual exams out of the way@MoFoFlo. Hopefully that extra time will make all the difference.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 18/01/2025 13:58

My daughter is still waiting final offer which is Edinburgh.

Although it's top ranked uni she has applied too I think she's pretty much 95% made the call it's off the table though. It's much closer to her predicted grades (so does add some uncertainty especially on one of her subjects), a long way from home (we are south of London) and it's also a 4 year course.

She loved York - uni and city so I think is quite happy to stick with that. Also comfortably inside predicted grades so can have a little more certainty about where she will be next year so I think that appeals to her.

mumonthehill · 28/01/2025 07:05

Well norovirus has hit here so ds is now missing mocks. A bit concerning but absolutely nothing that can be done.
