I've just realised that the year 12 2023/2024 thread is full - oops! - last message on 16 August - don't know if someone started another continuation thread but I can't see it. This coming year DS1 does A levels and university applications, DS2 will be in his GCSE year.

If there is a thread already started please let me know.

@jamimmi I suppose we can't be sure, as everywhere works differently, but I've assumed that DC1 is now waiting until well after the UCAS deadline to hear back from her final two choices (two offers, one interview which she bombed so mentally written off). Her joint first choice is one of the ones she's waiting for, so I hope they don't keep her hanging too far into spring.

Changes17 · 15/12/2024 11:06

I suppose once it gets past the end of university term - around now? - it’s going to be next term for offers.
I think the good thing about having choices in already is that you don’t really have to think about it any more and focus on revising for mocks etc.
But if there are still a couple of spaces and you have till the UCAS deadline at the end of January then maybe the Christmas break is a good time to think about how best to fill them, but perhaps hold off till nearer the deadline to see if any offers come in that may guide thinking on that. Terms seem to start around January 6 for staff so there’s still plenty of time.

jamimmi · 15/12/2024 11:49

@Changes17 @TheTurn0fTheScrew I agree with you both just managing expectations. The plan is to consider the other 2 spots now she has headspace having done EPQ and exams. Out issue is she didn't like several.we visited so needs to.do paper research for some.middle ground campus uni's for.bio chem.

Changes17 · 15/12/2024 11:53

@jamimmi agree about managing expectations.
There'll be a couple of weeks off over Christmas and I’m suggesting to DS that he has a week off before getting back to it in the second week. Just the headspace to put things in perspective.

jamimmi · 15/12/2024 12:28

@Changes17 headspace really needed here. She has reversals for her last dance show then1st week in January and her PT job in hospitality to give her something else.to think about over the holidays. Already said no more then 12 hours at.work to her! Her exams.are.all late May and June so may encourage a couple days off at either Easter ot Feb too

My daughter got a little personalised welcome to York gold ticket in the post today.

She's very pleased with it.

Changes17 · 16/12/2024 18:00

That’s lovely, @Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky Great way to head into the holidays.

BlueMarigold · 16/12/2024 20:33

@Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky my DD is hoping to go to York too! It’s her firm choice

NotLinkingMyChildrenInThreads · 17/12/2024 05:55

4/5 offers in now, with first and 2nd choices included! I’m pleased they are in before the Christmas break! We’ll be expecting our York gold ticket too🥳

mumonthehill · 17/12/2024 06:08

The York golden ticket sounds fab. DS got a letter offer through the post from Leeds and he was delighted with this.

NotLinkingMyChildrenInThreads · 18/12/2024 21:03

Anyone had any offers in from Glasgow? How quick were they?

DC1 submitted her UCAS form in Octoer - not a dickie bird from Glasgow to date...

NotLinkingMyChildrenInThreads · 18/12/2024 21:19

Hmmm @TheTurn0fTheScrew I’ve not heard from prior years how quickly they send out offers….they are the only one we’re waiting to hear from now. Hopefully we’ll hear before February as that’s when we’ve got a couple of offer holder days lined up.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 18/12/2024 21:25

TBH following a slightly shambolic open day experience after submitting her UCAS she's rather gone off Glasgow, so she's not all that bothered.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 19/12/2024 18:40

Durham offer came today 4/5. Just Edinburgh to come.

PhotoDad · 19/12/2024 18:51

Durham offer here too! 3/5, pending for Lancaster and Cambridge (which at least we know won't be until the end of January).

That doesn’t sound good at all!

Tiggerspal · 20/12/2024 17:38

DD got an email from Bath saying they won't be sending out decisions until all applications are in (end of Jan I guess). She send her application in November. This is for Economics. Thought it might be helpful for anyone else waiting.

Sorry, that probably sounded a bit dramatic. DC1 loves Glasgow as a city but the open day was just a bit...unenthusiastic? disorganised? She did Glasgow and Edinburgh open days back to back and Edinburgh had some really engaging taster lectures. But of course there's no way of knowing if it's just that the marketing team at Edinburgh are a whole lot slicker!

Tiggerspal · 20/12/2024 19:46

Its's interesting but probably not a surprise how influential the Open Days are. DD was very unimpressed by Durham saying that they didn't seem bothered and hadn't made any effort.

I wasn't impressed with Durham. Halls tour wasn't great. Subject speech was ok.

I also found the town seemed a lot smaller than I was expecting.

BonjourCrisette · 20/12/2024 22:58

DD had been obsessed with UEA and a particular subject for ages until we went to the open day. She felt talked down to and patronised and isn't planning to apply there or for that subject any more. I actually think this is the right decision for her tbh. But yes, open days can be incredibly powerful. We really liked Norwich though!

@NotLinkingMyChildrenInThreads a Glasgow offer turned up today - odd timing but there you go. Hopefully there's one on the way for your DC as well.

halloween67 · 23/12/2024 16:12

What subject was that please?

UnimaginableWindBird · 23/12/2024 16:36

DD is doing two coursework subjects, so she isn't really getting much of a break this Christmas. She's have a pretty calm sorting and summer, though, just having to work on history and apply for her art foundation course.
