Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Argh...having various nightmares around DD using the computer and the school losing one of her exams, or submitting the empty one for geography that was created when the laptop crashed...

Today is going to be a very long day, feel slightly sick to my stomach at the moment. Praying for a B in Chem, but expecting a C.

DD still hasn't said if she's getting up early tomorrow, or sleeping in...I suspect her phone will be pinging with messages from friends early on. Lots seem to have to get A's in their subject to meet the offer so stress levels are high at the moment.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2022 09:40

In other news, DS1 has ow submitted his resit essay and plan. He is feeling anxious but I helped him proofread, as did my dad, and he said (he's a senior lecturer) that he ca't see it being a fail. Think we sorted out Referencing and random Abuse of Capital letters.

Oblomov22 · 17/08/2022 09:52

Welcome all newbies. It is a very nice thread. As Tomnoom said we are all welcoming and accommodating, have a variety of dc, intelligences, lots with SN.

Cinnamon I too like the:
'Heroes of their own stories' . And can we please put 'Results Day' in the title? Probably Best you get it ready today, because we are clearly going to finish this one and I don't want to be faffing around in the dark trying to find new thread.

I fear I may be doing other faffing around in the dark. Ds1 finally looked at clearing yesterday, but is adamant he's got good enough for 1st choice Nottingham. Hope he's correct and not just cocky.

I am working at home. But have a lot to do on both my accounts jobs. But we will look at 8am.

Sounds like our school does it unusually and parents are heavily involved. We all go to school for 9am, lots of parents aswell. Parents stand with child in the playground and get envelope. Was a very nice atmosphere when we did it for GCSE's.

We then will return home. Will deal with clearing if needed. I'm a very practical person generally, just gets on with things and deals with whatever life throws me. So I'm not worried.

I too like Proggy's dd jib. Ds is similar. Tonnes of them (not all, but most of the year 300+?) are going to a 11pm nightclub miles away. He says he won't be able to afford too many £10 Jagerbombs until the death leaving time of 2am.

Piccolo, I agree re sort your verbal offer in clearing first by phoning them. Then refuse your insurance on UCAS. Only Then does this allows the verbal clearing offer to make it official on UCAS.

NCT I appreciate the difficulty of choosing Nottingham with no guarantee of accommodation. But hopefully there will be a high chance of accommodation being given. Because that is what all clearing student face?

I will report back on mattress topper survey possibly this weekend? Not all have arrived from Dunelm yet.

I like the Split. Haven't seen Marriage yet.

That’s a relief @Piggywaspushed . Hope everything goes smoothly now and he gets on the masters course.

I’m doing Segway this afternoon for ds’ bday with four boys. Ds is a bit miffed I insisted on joining but one of his friends isn’t 16 yet and under 16s need an adult with them. I’m going to have to try to drive slightly ahead /behind and pretend I don’t know them!

ChristopherTracy · 17/08/2022 09:56

Had a dream last night that DS and I missed an important train. Trying not to worry and channel that into practical stuff as @Oblomov22 is doing. Not succeeding so far!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 17/08/2022 09:58

Ah, that's good to know, thanks seeline, singing and Monkey. I was panicking at the thought of DD declining her offer but then not getting an offer through clearing.

icanbe, I can recommend Watergate Bay for a rainy day. Lovely long beach to walk along, surfers to watch, and can food and drinks at the bar above the beach - used to be called The Beach Hut, but may have been renamed.

Otherwise, seal watching at Godrevy Lighthouse.

Heifer · 17/08/2022 10:00

@Piggywaspushed I was just thinking of your DS1 yesterday and was going to come on and asked if I had missed an update. Fingers crossed for him and well done for him getting it done. When will he know if all ok?

I'm really not sleeping well. Far more worried about results that I thought I would be. It's just the not knowing isn't it. I am sure that once DD is at uni she will thrive, the extra help with dyslexia will really help etc but it's just getting in now. She is still saying if she got a C in Biology she shouldn't study it but I am now thinking that if a decent uni does accept her she should grab the offer. She may equally have got an A but I do think B is more likely. So still expecting the needed AAB but who knows! i want her to be proud of herself whatever the outcome. She has worked hard throughout school, no help with her Dyslexia whatever she has achieved we will be happy - but unless she gets A*AB she won't be happy I don't think...

Will all the clearing places be added by tonight?

Benjispruce4 · 17/08/2022 10:03

@Heifer DD1 had a uni friend who got a C in CS and went to Durham to do CS. She just got a First and is also dyslexic. Degree in one subject is different to A levels.

boxcar · 17/08/2022 10:04

@Monkey2001 Does that (that you can’t change anything on UCAS until 3pm) that it’s not possible to release and confirm places in clearing until then? I’m worrying that by the time DD gets her head around the situation and is ready to speak to alternative unis, places will have gone. I don’t have their UCAS logins. DD really doesn’t want her insurance place but can’t face looking into the details of a plan b. I’m treading on eggshells around both DT. At least DS is working today. DD’s got the day off & a million & one things to do but is still in bed…

FlyingPandas · 17/08/2022 10:06

Hello, I am another sometime lurker (though did post on the 2020 threads which now seem like a million years ago!) just sneaking out to say a big thank you to everyone here. Have been dipping in and out reading rather than posting but have found this thread such a comfort, everyone so honest and supportive and friendly, and a real help in those many anxious moments!

My DS is waiting for results on a BTEC and two A levels and is a lot calmer than I am at the moment I have to say Grin We know he’s done very well in the BTEC (subject to moderation) but in all honesty anything could happen with the A levels!

Sending so many good luck vibes to all of your amazing DC for tomorrow, will be thinking of you all.

Wheresthebeach · 17/08/2022 10:09

Glad things are progressing Piggy.

The dyslexia is a real issue for our kids Heifer, everyone thinks the extra time makes up for it but it really doesn't. They have to work so much harder all the time just to try and keep up.

Oh and 'Hi' to those just joining the thread.

Think I'll go back to staring at my computer screen failing to do anything productive...

Cantonet · 17/08/2022 10:14

Sorry to divert from the current topic 😨but what's the current best eBay sniper app? Trying to distract myself...

vxa2 · 17/08/2022 10:25

My daughter wants to take a gap year which has been agreed with her firm choice. If she doesn’t get the grades and the offer is withdrawn I am assuming that she will need to apply again for next year. Possibly a bit of a silly question but am I correct that clearing is for places for this year ?

I am getting really confused trying to work out all the possible scenarios. Her insurance is an u/c but she would only be able to take up that place if she went this year and she is not keen on her insurance and def wants to take a year out.

vxa2 · 17/08/2022 10:29

Also worrying I should have taken tomorrow off work - more for me than her.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2022 10:32

DS1 should know on 17 September , I think, heifer. I imagine since the only mark they get is 40 or a fail, the marking is really just a check to see if they have met the minimum. Jitters.

Oblomov22 · 17/08/2022 10:35

I said I was calm. It's all bullshit. And now I'm quietly bricking myself.

Oblomov22 · 17/08/2022 10:36

Vxa2, me too. Did I make a big mistake not taking tomorrow off work?

Seeline · 17/08/2022 10:39

DD has quit her job - too stressful!! At least it means she will be around on Friday if we're still trying to sort stuff ...

Wheresthebeach · 17/08/2022 10:41

vxa2 Clearing is for this year.

Wheresthebeach · 17/08/2022 10:43

Cantonet What's a sniper app? DD just missed out on a book she was bidding for...is there a better way than staring at your phone and swearing wildly when someone sneaks a bid in at the last minute £1 higher than yours?

ChestnutGrove · 17/08/2022 10:44

Please could someone post the link with info about results day? I'm not sure where it is. Thank you

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 17/08/2022 10:46

My stress levels are gradually ramping up, I’ll probably be a quivering wreck tomorrow morning. DH will be going in to collect results with DD as he will be much calmer than me. DD has been diligently going through good options on clearing jic. I’m impressed she’s on top of her plan b but I really really hope she gets her first choice obviously. This thread is nice and calming though, feeling a bit better……

I feel ill, sore throat, cough, couldn't sleep. Covid test negative, so may be stress! Nearly there!
