Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Thanks, singing, that’s a really good idea. I’ve just looked at Southampton and their website says they won’t publish clearing places until 8am on Thursday. Manchester says 5pm Wednesday, so I’ve suggested to DD that she signs up for alerts for the unis she thinks she’d consider, to save wading through every website between now and Thursday.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 15/08/2022 22:16

Aaaargh! Someone on WIWIKAU has just posted to say they checked UCAS and it has updated to say their DD’s place is confirmed (conditional offer).
How is that possible, with the embargo?

cariadambyth · 15/08/2022 22:22

@Alsoplayspiccolo , I’ve just come on to say exactly the same thing! How can this be?

NCTDN · 15/08/2022 22:23

Wiwikau is dangerous! Gets me into a panic- I need to stay away!

EwwSprouts · 15/08/2022 22:28

@Delphigirl And she persisted. Just wow!

That’s one hell of a mistake. Presumably lots are now logging on to see if there results are there. Could it be a troll post?

Comefromaway · 15/08/2022 22:50

So whilst searching for another email with Ds I saw three emails dated 10th Aug, one from Ucas saying congrats you have the grades and you’re in and two from banks with codes to open accounts.

Ds has ignored them as he thought they were all spam

another local specialist performing arts college gave out actual certificates today.

Comefromaway · 15/08/2022 22:51

Btec by the way

Fonty · 15/08/2022 22:55

@singingstones Hope your DH ok. Maybe a quick call to the unit would put his mind at rest. They’re v reluctant to do this, I know!! My DH ok but we had a moment in Tesco fruit & veg aisle where he had ‘a bit of a turn’ & had to take a few puffs of the spray. Has been ok since.
Sorry to slightly derail thread. Definitely some good advice coming through re signing up for alerts prior to Thurs. Will get DS onto this tomorrow. It is tricky as I don’t want to sound like I haven’t got faith in him 🤷‍♀️

Fruitygal · 15/08/2022 23:16

Definitely phone unit if feeling iffy after stent fitted - if issue they can help but often just reassure.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 15/08/2022 23:36

From comments on that WIWIKAU post, it seems it’s probably to do with BTECS, which aren’t subject to the embargo.
Even so, it’s a bit crap that some kids have randomly and inadvertently discovered that they’ve got their first choice place.

singing, I’d call the hospital on your DH’s behalf if he won’t. Better to be reassured by then than to worry, if it’s nothing to be concerned about, and of course if it IS, he needs to be checked out.

I hope it’s nothing serious.

Congratulations @Comefromaway ! Has he quite realised now?

I wish he would phone the unit for reassurance but it's like talking to a bad tempered brick wall. He's googled it and is now giving it to the end of the week, apparently 🤦‍♀️
Trying to be sympathetic..

singingstones · 15/08/2022 23:44

Congratulations @Comefromaway!

Another confirmed place, 3/3 on the thread so far 💪

That's a good idea Also thank you - I will tell him either he phones or I will (and he will not want that).

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 23:46

@singingstones can you ring the unit? They must be used to wives phoning for stubborn partners Hope all ok.

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 23:47

@Comefromaway how wonderful! Congratulations to him but what a weird way to find out after all the worry. 😁

Monkey2001 · 16/08/2022 00:02

tryingmybest13 · 12/08/2022 12:08

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn exactly right! The phrasing was not clear and this might be an issue. Lots of Press inferences that either the mid point meant boundaries or that if 10% of kids got a A in A level English in 2019 and 30% in 2021, then there would be a mid point of 20% this year. The ratio is set across the bell curve.

Waves to fellow uni bod, too @CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee

Here is the DATA HE bell curve for SQA

I have just realised quite how ridiculous the Advanced Highers were in 2021 - 50% got an A, which has the same UCAS points as an A* at A level!

Monkey2001 · 16/08/2022 00:12

@Comefromaway Woo hoo, just seen your news. Hope you are a happy house now!

Comefromaway · 16/08/2022 00:50

Thank you. He’s very nonplussed. He was pretty certain of getting the grades as conservatoires tend to offer low as it’s all about the audition. He’s still got his head in last weeks NYMT show.

but nice to see it in writing.

Volterra · 16/08/2022 04:27

Brilliant news @Comefromaway !!!

Oblomov22 · 16/08/2022 05:21

Congratulations Comefromaway.
Hope Dh ok Singing.
I woke at 4am. I kind of feel ill in a non descript way. I'm not actually looking forward to Thursday. This is not like me.

EquallyDivided · 16/08/2022 06:00

I've woken early thinking about it all too, DS suddenly got twitchy yesterday too. We logged onto track last night just in case as he has two BTECs and could meet his offer from just those but no update. There is virtually no chance he won't meet his offer (56 points and the course is in clearing) but the nerves are still jangling. It's boiling upstairs here still and no sign of rain which doesn't help.

Congrats to DS @Comefromaway !

Hope DH feels better this morning @singingstones. On another thread I am on we keep a rusty shovel for dealing with uncooperative DHs, it comes in very handy for the purposes of letting off steam.

Fruitygal · 16/08/2022 06:23

@Comefromaway congratulations 🎉 such great news!

Hope stroppy stent DH changes his mind - us women are so much better at getting support, answers and help for health stuff.

Today is manic with work again but WFH and got my 1st ever mammogram at lunch so plenty to distract from results. DD doing something with her friends so should be kept busy !

PaddingtonPaddington · 16/08/2022 06:32

Congrats @Comefromaway

DD finally got an email from school about collecting results on Thursday from 8am and she agreed I could come and sit in the car while she went in to get them. 2 days to go.

Fiddlersgreen · 16/08/2022 06:37

Congratulations @Comefromaway !

a bit cooler this morning here which is refreshing but why am I still bloody sweating?!

good luck for today @Fruitygal
