Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

@NCTDN yes please can you DM me? Many thanks

Done!

People whose DC lose things might like to consider investing in some "tiles" which are little tracker devices you can attach to key rings or sew into handbag/coat. They were recommended on a St Andrews parents FB page - an extra use for them when travelling is that you can put one in your hold luggage so that you can find it if they lose it. If you have university keys it would more than pay for itself by saving one loss!

Sorry, has anyone got a prepaid euro card for their travelling DC? I have tried the PO online but they don’t like the details I am putting in. Is it because they are 18?

I was going to ask the same question today.
Do I need a referral link for Revolut?

NCTDN · 12/08/2022 22:19

@Fiddlersgreen I've sent you a message.

Volterra · 13/08/2022 05:59

@tryingmybest13 thank you for posting. I am going to buey my head in sand about it all I think for a few days and hope there will be some flexibility on the day

@Cantonet she was diagnosed last September. Had a go at meds then which didn't work and now trying again. She's with us at the moment and can't find them so hoping she left them in Cardiff as we have boxes everywhere. It would be nice if they are both in Cardiff and if they are it will be good but I went there and it would feel a bit like a family thing and I think it would be nice if he does his own thing.

It has been a very long hot 3 days which I never want to go through again but we are here. Both DC's are here and it is starting to feel like home already. I thought I would possibly shed a little tear saying goodbye to house of 20 years but in the event I couldn't wait to get off the drive . My Stepmum is coming to help sort today and we're off to friend's for Sunday lunch, so lovely to be home, especially after thd shitfest 2022 had been.

Fruitygal · 13/08/2022 08:08

@Volterra glad the move is complete and I hope this is a new chapter and the rest of 2022 is much better x

cariadambyth · 13/08/2022 08:30

I’m glad the move is done now @Volterra, I never find the unpacking in a new house as stressful as the packing of the previous house because you don’t have the time restraints and pressures. I hope you settle in quickly and it feels like home soon.
I’m getting increasingly worried about Thursday but trying to keep busy and not think about it - easier said than done!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 13/08/2022 08:33

@EwwSprouts download that blog page, we may need it as evidence when the riots start next week! (Only half joking 🙃 )

@Monkey2001 thaks for the resit advice, another thing our lot get done over on. Those tile things, do you know can you just buy one for £13.99 or does it need some base thing? The starter pack is £45 and has one tile and a bigger thing. I’ve never used these before and don’t want to waste money if it doesn’t work on its own.

@Volterra congrats on the move finally happening! I wish you much happiness in your new home. 🥂

Decorhate · 13/08/2022 09:16

@Volterra Wishing you many happy years in your new home

I also use Revolut- got a card for this year’s holidays & no problems so far. I can also send a link if anyone needs one. Both my sons use Revolut too - they were able to order cards in their right without me needing to get involved

Benjispruce4 · 13/08/2022 09:24

Gosh what a hot weekend for moving @Volterra I wish you happiness in your new home.
DD working yesterday, Monday and Tuesday then off until Saturday and her will be away so she will be around more so plenty of time for panic. I’m hoping she gets a shift for Wednesday so she can’t think.

Benjispruce4 · 13/08/2022 09:24
  • her boyfriend
Benjispruce4 · 13/08/2022 09:27

It’s Saturday isn’t it? I’m heat/meno brain fogged! She’s working today.

crazycrofter · 13/08/2022 09:41

Well done @volterra ! Hope it feels like home very soon.

Dd is having a meet up in Cardiff with some camp friends Tue-Wed. I think they’ve planned it to distract themselves. It’s ds’ birthday on Wed too. Can’t wait for the next two weeks to be over! Although we’ll then be facing our move.. 😬

Monkey2001 · 13/08/2022 10:10

Well done on getting the move done, it must have been awful in the heat! Hope you have some good times re-nesting.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I have not got any tiles yet, but will get some for DS2 as he is great at losing things! I don't think you need anything other than your phone to go with it, the packs have different shapes - so a credit card shaped over for the wallet and stick on ones for other things. I have just got my niece and airtag for her 21st - by Apple so a bit prettier but costs twice as much and only worked with Apple devices, I think Tiles work with any device. They are the same price in John Lewis, so if convenient you could go there and see them and ask about how they work.

ealingwestmum · 13/08/2022 10:34

Onwards and upwards Volterra 🍾 to new (and yet familiar) beginnings!

Benjispruce4 · 13/08/2022 10:39

Just had an email from school about Thursday and my stomach did a little flip on reading it. Results on their portal at 8am, school open at 8.30.

ProggyMat · 13/08/2022 12:51

DD is working all day today at the pub and doing the Sunday lunch shift tomorrow. Then she’s doing all day Mon- Weds at her other job - so that should keep her occupied!
Her lovely boyfriend ( already knows which Uni he is going to as sat IB) is coming up to stay, so thankfully I’ll have support on Thursday.

@272Newnames DDs insurance has sent her a reading list although she can’t book accommodation yet as it’s not her firm choice…

Fruitygal · 13/08/2022 12:59

DD going on a picnic with her friends tomorrow all day and then has been doing errands for me and cooking our dinners several times the past week plus dentist, beautician, hygenist etc and hanging out with a couple of her friends who live very close.

Spoke to me this morning and is a little calmer ...... chosen the 2 friends to pick up results with and planned the time they are going to meet - they will drive up with their parents too and then we are left in the car park while they get their results together.

Unis have the results yesterday .....she got an email from her 1st choice that said this so now we have radio silence until Thursday from UCAS.

With my DSs they found out which uni before their A level grades .......but could get both online .....DD has to go into school to get her results.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 13/08/2022 13:00

Thanks @Monkey2001 i might pop up to Jl this weekend - any excuse! 😄

ProggyMat · 13/08/2022 13:38

@Volterra I hope you’re sat in your new garden, project managing and delegating tasks out!
Also, that your lovely assistant PM, aka DSM is also assisting in your strategy! 😂
Don’t think I could could frame the ‘that’ll do’ approach as ‘reverse psychology’ but hopefully you’ll catch my drift! 🤪
Enjoy your new nest! 🍾

MirandaWest · 13/08/2022 13:46

DS has a trial shift at local pub tomorrow 😊

His girlfriend gets back from family holiday to Cornwall later on today so am presuming he’ll be seeing her 😂

pangolinfan · 13/08/2022 13:49

Ha ha @Fruitygal** I'm another parent who's been informed that I must remain in my vehicle in the school car park on Thursday, unless and until I receive any other instructionsSmile. Quite pleased DD is away with her friends in France until Tuesday night and not at home reading the online Guardian (though I am sure the socials are full of exam gloom stories), but given her firm is an astronomically high offer we will need to have a think about plans B (probably insurance ) and C (don't know yet!). Can I ask whether anyone knows if Scottish unis sometimes offer an alternative option if you miss your grades (DD aiming for a very popular joint honours combo, Economics and Politics)? Given the flexibility in the Scottish system I wondered whether anyone on this thread had experience of starting out with an alternative to the course applied for (and I'm also wondering whether that could still lead to a degree with your original preferred options anyway as the course progresses).

Comefromaway · 13/08/2022 13:56

We have just arrived in Leicester and are watching (rather listening as the band are tucked away) to him play tonight. Results not on his radar.

however last night dh dreamt that Ds failed 2 parts of his Btec and had to go through clearing. Luckily that will not happen as ds’s insurance is unconditional but I think dh is worse than me at the moment!

EwwSprouts · 13/08/2022 13:58

@Volterra So pleased your new house is already starting to feel like home. Wishing you many happy years there!

Monkey2001 · 13/08/2022 14:01

@pangolinfan not quite the same, but a friend's DS arrived at Edinburgh with a place on a less competitive course and went to speak to someone about moving to a much more selective course and managed to get the course he wanted in spite of fairly average grades from a very high achieving school (City of London Boys). He is very charming! So that shows there can be flexibility.
