Thread 35 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 'What They Did on Their Summer Holidays'

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/07/2022 11:57

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Thanks guys.

The issue with the uni website is a stupid 2 step verification whihc goes to his phone, of course...

But, yes, I am sure it can be sorted. He has til 17th August to resubmit.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 28/07/2022 21:48

I don't think we have any Scots do we? Scottish lurkers, declare yourselves!

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 29/07/2022 00:05

Please do Scottish Lurkers

It's me OP btw I've had name change!

Oblomov22 · 29/07/2022 04:20

Btw Piggy what are you going to do about his phone? He'll clearly need a new (2nd hand from eBay?) one?

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2022 06:26

Not sure. He has a contract with Tesco but the phone part was paid off.

I mean, I'd happily transfer that across to me . But I stopped paying for his phone because he was always losing/breaking them.

Benjispruce4 · 29/07/2022 07:28

Oh @Piggywaspushed I feel your pain. So frustrating.Hope he’s not too badly affected by module.
I went with DD last night as she drove out to where trial shift will be. Good job we did as there is a road closure causing an unfamiliar detour for her. So at least she is now prepared 🤞🏻

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2022 07:40

His first step is urgently to get on to this Blackboard thing. I understand the need for security but honestly they don't seem to realise that if everything is reliant on a mobile phone for access, people will encounter problems!

Monkey2001 · 29/07/2022 08:13

@Piggywaspushed sorry to hear you and DS1 are having a rubbish week after everything was looking good. Has he ordered a replacement SIM? Once he has that he can put it in a family phone to do what he needs to do before his phone situation is sorted. Computer not charging seems like a brutal extra problem when things are going so badly. 😥

Decorhate · 29/07/2022 08:29

@Piggywaspushed So sorry to hear about the latest drama. Hope he manages to find out the details soon so he can make a plan or at least find out about the resits. Is his place on the Masters dependent on getting a particular grade?

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2022 08:35

At least he can use my computer , I guess.

He lies about everything. I know he has told DH he is only a few hundred overdrawn and it's more like 3k so DH thinks he has the money to sort issues.

He needs a 2:2.

I think resits are capped at 40 %, presumably to discourage them as a strategy.

DH will hit the roof, and we are meant to be having cake and going for a meal later.

Tbh, I may just run away from home. Is that an option!?

Piggywaspushed · 29/07/2022 08:35

Sorry, turning this thread into woes.

Isthisjustnormal · 29/07/2022 08:44

Oh piggy, it all sounds like a nightmare! Hopefully can be broken down into steps and progress made - once you’ve gone aim/phone sorted and can get onto the system that will hopefully feel like things are at least in progress?

Seeline · 29/07/2022 08:48

@Piggywaspushed sorry to hear if all your problems -kids never stop being a worry!

DS managed to throw his phone down the loo in his en-suite about a month after starting uni in 2020. Height of the pandemic when using his phone was the key to just about everything. We couldn't travel to get him a new one. Had to use a courier, by which time he was testing +ve, and all his post went to a central post room on campus which he couldn't access!! That was a fun week 😁

Delphigirl · 29/07/2022 09:46

Oh piggy. My commiserations, that all sounds very stressful…

Zebracat · 29/07/2022 10:38

@Piggywaspushed so sorry, woe upon woe, but don’t apologise, it’s kind of what we are here for, or 1 of the things, anyway.
I just shouted and swore at mine for the 1st time ever. I was waiting for a call from the GP about my mobility issues, supposedly on my mobile, and glamorously cleaning up after the dog in the garden. House phone rang and I hobbled to it, arriving just as it stopped, only to find teen at the door, watching me, inches from the phone.
We do so much for her, but clearly stretching out a hand to pick up the phone was impossible. She explained that she was “zoned out” and didn’t hear it. Bollocks. She’s now gone away with friends for the weekend. We’d just put an extra 100 in her account to be sure she had enough. I feel really guilty, should not have shouted.

Cantonet · 29/07/2022 10:43

@Piggywaspushed i'm sorry to hear of your trials & tribulations. I hope it all gets sorted out soon. I must admit i've frequently felt like leaving home myself with all the issues we've had this year.
I hope you're all having a good Summer? I've just dropped my eldest off at the train station as she's doing a Vet placement in Canada for a couple of weeks. This is the first time she's been on a long haul flight by herself. Although she's 23 I don't like the thought of it ☹️ DS & the family will be going out to meet her in a couple of week's time.
Ds2 who's just done his Gcse's has got a job washing up in a cafe but still doesn't want to travel anywhere. So we're at home alone just the two of us.

Run Piggy Run! You have all our support we'll put you up in your location of choice.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 29/07/2022 10:58

Mmm Dd has surprised me by getting another job ...pays well £9.50 an hour , bar work at Pompey FC they also supply for Southampton FC, very flexible you pick shifts you can do. She doesn't know when the shifts actually finish though 🙄possibly relying on Dad taxis as he works near Fratton Park ..but he works late shifts that finish at all times. Hope she has the Uber app.

Also I have Covid, at last...feel OK ISH lots to do ..could do without it. Angry

crazycrofter · 29/07/2022 11:10

Oh @OrangeCinnamonCroissant sorry to hear about the covid 😬 hope you get over it quickly.

Your post reminds me actually that someone was telling me that their daughter has a similar arrangement at Warwickshire Cricket Club. I guess sports clubs are another option for dd to explore when she’s finally back from all her exploits. Hope today brings some positive news @piggywaspushed. At least ds has the shoe shop job so his financial situation must be improving a bit?

Seeline · 29/07/2022 12:39

Tempers fraying here too. DDs birthday BBQ this afternoon/evening. She has done nothing to help so far. DH and DS have been working hard all week. Very hot this morning and neither of the DCs would get out of bed to help with the gazebo and setting up the garden, despite premises yesterday. My back is now killing me and not really feeling like food prep.

Benjispruce4 · 29/07/2022 12:42

Aggghhh @Zebracat I think I’d have reacted the same. Hold tight ladies. Thank god for this thread! DD2 is at trial shift and DD1 has met a friend who is finally home from uni. Peace at last!

ealingwestmum · 29/07/2022 12:51

I hope it all goes well Seeline. Brings back memories from September. I very nearly ripped down the gazebo and stomped off, tempers were definitely raised that day.

Zebra, I’m afraid to admit that I have a dreadful mouth. I don’t lose it often, but when I do, it’s not attractive :( I admire that you manage to keep it together so much as you do.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 29/07/2022 12:53

Yes me too @Zebracat. I hate food prepping @Seeline it always seems like you spend ages doing it , there is always too much, or it's gone in about 1/10th of the time you took preparing!

Try and have a nice time too if you can x

mummyinbeds · 29/07/2022 12:58

I'm beginning to realise that my lazy, thoughtless, self centered, entitled, unorganised, argumentative, uncommunicative, grumpy son is quite normal. Thank you ladies. Don't you just love teenagers 🤔

My teenage specimen is currently at work. He does two 4.5 hour shifts a week at a well known holiday centre, collecting dirty laundry. He isn't earning enough to pay for the holiday he still hasn't booked and thinks he's going on next week. He won't consider getting another job elsewhere - perhaps in the pub he worked in before exams who said he could go back after exams. He's just texted to ask me to transfer money for him to buy lunch and put fuel in my car which he's taken to work as he needs to pick up his friends to go to a party this evening.

My younger teenager is still in bed when she should be doing her NEA 🤷
