Thread 35 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 'What They Did on Their Summer Holidays'

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/07/2022 11:57

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Hello 😊

We are in New York and so woke up this morning to the resignation news. All feels a bit surreal really.

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant Ds got back from his holiday last night. No major dramas though a few of them were sick for a couple of days. Tbh I suspect they found it slightly boring. But they have experienced it now & may be more discerning next time!

Benjispruce4 · 07/07/2022 18:53

I’m just getting my bunting out. Bye BoJo! 👋🏻
Thanks for new thread!

Takeittotheboss · 07/07/2022 19:42

Thanks for new thread. Congrats to IB ers🤗
DS had last week on boys leavers trip to ..... Back for Speech Day, Leavers Ball on Saturday. Quick turnaround with 3 days of cricket, now headed for a week(😮) of parties. Not sure when he's planning on sleeping but hey!🙄
Checked Clearing looks like his fim and insurance in for lower grades too. What does this mean for him though with a gap year planned?🤔

EwwSprouts · 07/07/2022 19:42

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant Channelling Enid Blyton there!

DS has got his leavers' hoodie and year book. I know it's an American import but it's interesting and school made sure there was nothing offensive. DS was surprisingly (to him & me) high up the list of those likely to return to school as a teacher.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/07/2022 19:53

That sounds a lovely leavers present @EwwSprouts.

Yes jollidays and hollibobs with lashings of ginger beer, a cold boiled egg and some fern to camp out under the stars on!

Thanks for the new thread, Orange. Surely not the last one before they all decamp to uni…??

At the rate we get through the threads? No, I am sure we will finish this one before the end of August with lots of results angst and then celebrations (🍀)

EwwSprouts · 07/07/2022 20:46

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant I know the EB books are out of favour but I did read some to DS and he enjoyed them. DS is partial to a ginger beer!

Heifer · 07/07/2022 21:33

I missed the new thread - thanks @OrangeCinnamonCroissant

Happy birthday @Zebracat hope you've had a nice day. Well done to @Horace123 and @HoneyMobster you can breath :-)

@shimy re those going through adjustment, I think it's similar to clearing in that the student needs to phone up to talk re the course beforehand and then they can let you know if they will make you an offer before you actually turn down your firm/insurance, although it's not binding it's not going in blind either.
I didn't realise re clearing that you did need to phone up to talk to them, I thought you applied online first, but it seems you can't apply until after 3.00pm (have I read that right) but you can start phoning up asap and get a feel. Please let me know if I've read that wrong - have to admit to not having watched the videos yet - will look at it more closely in a few weeks time. Haven't even mentioned to DD yet that clearing is open. Just want her to relax and forget all about it. She got back this afternoon from Spain and is currently having a nap before we watch Love Island..

ProggyMat · 07/07/2022 22:26

Checking in with thanks to @OrangeCinnamonCroissant just as DD is about to check out with the lasses on their post A level ‘jollies’ !
Dunno if it will involve ‘lashings of ginger beer’ 😂

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/07/2022 22:41

Can I admit to feeling a bit sad for DD today?

Next week is speech day and I was really hoping DD might get one of the year 13 progress prizes, given her move from BCD in mocks to A*AA in her NEAs (progress prizes are nominated by subject teachers, and her teachers have been over the moon with how much she’s improved since January).
We had an email earlier, informing us that DS has been awarded a prize (same prize 3 years out of 4) but no mention of DD. 😞

I know it doesn’t really matter, in the grand scheme of things, but DS gets recognition for lots of things he does, and DD really deserves a little moment of feeling like the extra effort she has to put into everything hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Its tough being a mum of a kid with ALN sometimes. 😢
