Thread 33 - Lovely Jubbly Jubilee Break, then back to Exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 27/05/2022 17:10

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board. Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future?

Sent DD a numberjacks video on youtube at 12.30 before the maths exam - The episode was called The Lurgy which I thought was rather apt .....

@Oblomov22 wine can be a hobby :) - friend did a cocktail making class and a chocolate making class ...

Oblomov22 · 14/06/2022 15:44

Well done Paddington dd. She's our first finisher! Star

Volterra · 14/06/2022 15:54

Wonderful to have our finisher!!
DS said OCR MEI Maths was fine today, really hope the other boards have been too.

Volterra · 14/06/2022 15:59

Can see from Twitter Edexcel was hard , I hope they are ok.

Student Room are mixed on it, more people have said good than bad so far. Waiting for verdict from DC is nerve wracking, what will we all be like on results day??!!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 14/06/2022 16:17

Well done to your DD, Paddington! You must feel very relieved it’s all done and dusted! 🤩

Fingers crossed he found it ok and lets you know very soon, waiting is horrible. I can’t quite get my head around results day 😳

MirandaWest · 14/06/2022 16:25

DS said maths this afternoon (edexcel) was better than last week. And he seemed to like Ethics (OCR). All his subjects are different boards as geography is AQA

Volterra · 14/06/2022 16:27

That’s good news Miranda 🙂

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 14/06/2022 17:13

Are there generally cases where students are way off the mark with predicting how they've done ? I guess this year..who knows ...moving into waiting game and holiday territory!

I think I shall do some serious research by looking at Tik Tok results day duets

😂

DS thought his biology mock had gone really well and he got a D so I am not getting my hopes up, even when he thinks an exam has been ok.

PaddingtonPaddington · 14/06/2022 14:10

Thanks @Monkey2001 I've got the Edexcel grade statistics and there is a big difference!

and fingers crossed for your DS for the interview.

I've taken a look at Chemistry (no not obsessing....not me) and it's a massive difference as well. Let's hope the 'in between' is closer to 2021 than 2019!

Decorhate · 14/06/2022 17:38

@Monkey2001 Great news about the interview. Fingers crossed for him. I think you are right about those who’ve not gone through the process themselves finding it harder to let go.

Though I do hope that mine don’t copy what I did & move to a different country after graduation! I’m appreciating more now how hard it must have been for my parents.

Ds also had Edexcel Maths today. He appears to have gone to the pub…

Fruitybasket · 14/06/2022 17:44

DD says maths was not really better or worse than paper 1 Ferris wheels featured - still her least favourite subject but not required.

Monkey2001 · 14/06/2022 17:45

Verdict on Edexcel today "Really good" - first time he has said that for these exams. Phew!

Wheresthebeach · 14/06/2022 17:55

Anyone else notice the weather forecast for end of week? Record breaking temperatures? Going to freeze DD water bottle I think...

Volterra · 14/06/2022 17:58

Overall Maths was ok then , phew!

Decorhate · 14/06/2022 18:05

@Wheresthebeach Yes luckily Ds’ Friday exam is in the morning. I’m supposed to be going into London that evening & not really looking forward to it.

Cantonet · 14/06/2022 18:09

Sounds like a brilliant opportunity for your Ds @Monkey. It's much more upmarket than my nephews health care assistant roles that have subbed their way through uni. One even did some shifts as a fully qualified doctor 😂

I will be so very happy, not sad if ds goes off to Uni this year. I don't understand the angst over this. It does help that he's been boarding for a while & comes home every 3 weeks or so. I do think he needs to spread his wings, as he's naturally very cautious.

My dd's have already said they will work overseas. DD is planning on doing the North American Vet Exam next year at @ the same time at her finals. One of her clinical placements this year is in Canada & we have family there. Her boyfriend is doing Aerospace Engineering & the opportunities are much better for jobs over there I think.
Dd2 who's planning on doing Architecture will most probably end up going to Asia.

The DS's are very attached to me, so I don't think they will. But they might very well change a lot in the next few years.

Ds1 has his last paper on Thursday thank god. No more itchy rashes due to Adhd meds hopefully . Just the whole palaver of finding & titrating some new meds. Without help he will sleep his way through uni. He does a very good impression of having Narcolepsy 🤦🏼‍♀️
ChristopherTracy · 14/06/2022 18:20

Maths today ok apparently but DS said he didnt finish the last question - first paper that has happened in. Due to a really tricky time waster in the middle.

Fruitybasket · 14/06/2022 19:28

@ChristopherTracy think that was the ferris wheel question

NCTDN · 14/06/2022 19:50

@Monkey2001 I guess you live in Bristol?

crazycrofter · 14/06/2022 19:55

@Monkey2001 it hadn’t occurred to me that the average between 2019 and 2021 might not be done on a subject by subject basis. But different subjects always have different percentages at top grades don’t they, so you’d think that would have to continue.

Glad the exams went well, on the whole, today. I think I’m mainly excited for dd rather than dreading her leaving. Obviously I’ll miss her but

crazycrofter · 14/06/2022 19:57

Ooh @Monkey2001 as you live in Bristol - where is it best to park for Canons Marsh Amphitheatre?
