Thread 33 - Lovely Jubbly Jubilee Break, then back to Exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 27/05/2022 17:10

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board. Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future?

That's interesting others have 3 history exams. I hope Ds hasn't forgotten a paper. He is AQA.

Piggywaspushed · 12/06/2022 19:21

Did he do NEA?

272Newnames · 12/06/2022 19:53

I’m glad there are not many reading lists from unis for the summer. DS is doing a combination of working and three separate holidays. I think they need a break.

Ignoring the chance that they spent all summer on a reading list and didn’t end up at that uni.

EwwSprouts · 12/06/2022 20:11

@Madhairday Yes it was AQA. I think the trouble lies in that the weighting to different parts of the syllabus was not as expected. Not that the content itself was off limits.

@Fruitybasket Good to have you back. Sorry to hear your DD is in such a predicament. DS doesn't think the papers have been made easy for them so she may be in line for a good grade to date. Whatever she decides I have my fingers crossed for her!

@LimitIsUp Hello!

I hope there isn't a summer reading list. DS has plans for a lot of sport. And I really want him to learn to drive but as he hasn't booked a lesson yet that ship may have sailed...

icanbewhatiwant · 12/06/2022 20:13

@Piggywaspushed was that question for me? If it was I haven't a clue. I should know but Ds doesn't tell me anything.

icanbewhatiwant · 12/06/2022 20:16

Ds1 wasn't given a reading list before he started. Ds2 was told his summer job starts 1st July. But I think it'll be the following week. So he won't get much of a break after his last exam on 28th. He will be working 8am-4.30pm Monday to Friday until mid sept.

Piggywaspushed · 12/06/2022 20:29

I just thought a reading list might get them thinking... I remember when I went to uni, I was just about the only person that had read the books!

It's a long old summer...

ProggyMat · 12/06/2022 20:31

DD will have a reading list but I don’t imagine that it would materialise until her offer has been confirmed on ‘results day’ ?
Meanwhile, once exams are over on 23rd she has her Yr13 Leavers ‘do’, the girls’ holiday to Greece (😳) two part time jobs and a LDR to juggle
My head is spinning when she’s asking me my opinion about ‘dates’ which luckily for her has abated my wrath about the amount of revision snacks that have been scoffed…

Fruitybasket · 12/06/2022 20:35

Thanks @EwwSprouts she’s going for it ! She feels crappy still with headache, fatigue and cough but is battling through as says she has no temp so revising hard to make up for three days of nothing.

icanbewhatiwant · 12/06/2022 21:31

Yes Ds does have NEA with his history. I just asked. I'm clueless. Though I do remember him telling me he already has a mark for some of his history, so must be that.

Oblomov22 · 12/06/2022 21:38

Welcome LimitIsUp.
Piggy ds1 had his third and final sociology paper tomorrow.

Oblomov22 · 12/06/2022 21:47

I only mention final sociology paper because it has been an honour Piggy. who is being so incredibly supportive across 2 years plus.

Ds1 says it now he's finished his sociology papers, he will never look at her another sociology book text ever again.

Even though it was his favourite subject,he is done! never to be returned . I wonder how many of our dc feel that way?

ExtremelyDedicated · 12/06/2022 23:09

Interesting point @Oblomov22. I still work in the field of my favourite A level and reach for a textbook on that or related subjects pretty regularly still, I have quite a few of them in my office at work and acquire extras if people leave them behind when they leave the company,

Wheresthebeach · 12/06/2022 23:15

Welcome @LimitIsUp
DD super stressed over tomorrow’s chemistry. She’s been up worrying the last two nights so I’m hoping she sleeps tonight. Much harder for her than biology but agree with the comment of the mark scheme for biology being savage.

good luck to everyone this week.

Zebracat · 12/06/2022 23:45

Evening. proper meltdown here today. She hasn’t been doing any revision. I started to think she doesn’t want to fledge. Sure enough today there were floods of tears, and lots of stuff about not being able to study so clearly not able to go to Uni, and needing to concentrate on the psychological assessment and trauma work, and not being ready to leave home. She tried really hard to get me to agree she didn’t have to sit tomorrows exam.
All good points, but it is Computer Science, and it is really dry and complicated, and so very dull. I feel qualified to make this judgement because I have spent 4 hours reading through it all with her. The only things that helped were the snacks and the garden lights turning on. So so dull. Please don’t begrudge them the snacks. I’m buying loads more tomorrow, to replace the ones I ate!
I have told her that half of all A level students are crying and struggling to revise and definitely can’t achieve their offers, but she said they’ve not had her background. Except of course, that lots will have had something.
Should have known. We were sorting a bookcase today and DH encouraged me to bag up all my books on adolescent trauma for the charity shop.
I hope she feels better in the morning, she’s finally gone to bed. I’m now too worried about her to sleep.

crazycrofter · 12/06/2022 23:50

Hope all the science exams go well this week. It seems as if the humanities exams were front loaded and those who only do sciences started much later. Dd just has Psychology 3 on Thursday and RS 2 the following Tuesday (with Harry Styles in between!).

I don’t think dd will have much time for reading. She doesn’t think she’ll have long enough spells at home for a job although she did say lots of her friends have very flexible zero hours contracts so she might hand in her CV at a few places. Does anyone have suggestions of places where she could just pick up shifts as and when? She thought maybe McDonald’s?

Thanks for biology info @LimitIsUp . Psychology was his original choice. He could potentially switch Business for Economics and then do Psychology.

crazycrofter · 12/06/2022 23:53

Sorry to hear about DD’s upset @Zebracat 😢 and your DD’s worry @Wheresthebeach . Hope they cope ok tomorrow.

Heifer · 13/06/2022 00:26

There is no way DD will want to do any Uni reading until Sept. She has plans - 2 holidays with friends (possibly 3) plus whatever we do, lots of days outs, lie ins, good times. Possibly doing a weeks life guarding course. Will work as a swimming coach assist when not doing all the above, and it fits in with a lie in and partying. So my bet is no life guarding course, not much working until she runs out of money but plenty of fun and relaxation. Good for her I say - although I've made it clear this is the last free summer.

Good luck everyone for this coming week.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 13/06/2022 07:15

Sorry to read latest update @Zebracat. I think there is a good point in sitting the exams ...even if hoping to resit as a practice at least, who knows what results likely to be.
