Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I will feel mean if DS rejects Winchester as they have been so helpful with his application and every time we've been there it's been a good experience.

crazycrofter · 21/02/2022 20:41

Haha @Piggywaspushed! Poor man!

Hope the interviews go well @OrangeCinnamonCroissant.

That’s bad about the York days @whatsnext2. And strange as dd has an in person day there a week on Sat.

whatsnext2 · 21/02/2022 20:44

I guess it depends on the department, suggests to me politics is a bit flaky.
Fiddlersgreen · 21/02/2022 21:05

Probably wishful thinking but can we firm an offer now and choose the insurance later on?
DS is probably going to firm Cardiff but we have offer days at his 2 insurance options end of March.
Just thinking it would be easier as we could apply for Cardiff accommodation as soon as it allows

Seeline · 21/02/2022 21:20

I think it has to be done at the same time, because you have to decline the ones you don't want before you can firm.

crazycrofter · 21/02/2022 21:25

Glad dd got on ok today @seeline

EwwSprouts · 21/02/2022 21:37

Wow busy weekend there @OrangeCinnamonCroissant. Hope it's all a lot of fun and offers appear.

That is definitely departmental @whatsnext2. We're going on Wednesday for an in person open day. Will probably bit them on the bum with a few applicants.

@Piggywaspushed you could write to nice Sheffield man and say it was the weather!

Fiddlersgreen · 21/02/2022 21:38

@Seeline thanks, I thought that would be the case.
Do you know if we have to wait for all offers/rejections to come through as well?
Still waiting on Leeds but DS thinks their offer will be too high now anyway since his most recent mock results

Seeline · 21/02/2022 21:42

You can withdraw an application if you're fed up of waiting for a response, and then decline/accept the rest.

Shimy · 21/02/2022 22:22

I'll feel bad if we have to reject Brum Sad. The guy there was also sOOO nice! he even gave DS his LinkedIn contact and told him to contact him if he had any questions about anything related to his degree whether he firmed them or not. It's like the lovely boy next door that gazes adoringly at you and saves you a seat but you won't give the time of day, rather you're pining for the rugged bastard (Bath/Durham/putinanyotherUNIyou like) that makes you wait in the hope he'll ask you out one day Angry.

Piggywaspushed · 22/02/2022 06:57

Is anyone else finding some unis very bad at sending out info for their applicant days? Before DS applied anywhere he was hounded with emails. Now he has, and signed up to a few offer days, he hears nothing. It occurred to me we didn't go to a Birmingham one and we never actually got nay details about it.

BlueMarigold · 22/02/2022 07:24

@Piggywaspushed that’s interesting because Birmingham are the ones sending DD the most emails and one of three to send a congratulations on your offer letter in the post.

She has already done an online offer holder event, an online accommodation talk and booked onto a live offer holder day. They were the first to send links to join a Facebook group to make friends. On top of that there’s lots of emails about exploring Birmingham. Has your DS been checking his junk/spam folder?

Piggywaspushed · 22/02/2022 08:25

We have had all the Facebook ones and invites to offer older days but when actually booked on to something radio silence!

No info about the online accommodation thing mind!

cariadambyth · 22/02/2022 08:35

@Piggywaspushed, I know exactly what you mean about feeling mean rejecting some universities. RHUL could not have been more lovely, one of their history lecturers was really helpful and kind when DD was writing her EPQ but I think her head is being turned by as you so rightly say @shimy the rugged bastard Warwick who haven’t done any shmoozing at all. Let’s see what their open day is like tomorrow…

BlueMarigold · 22/02/2022 08:59

@cariadambyth DD felt bad for them at first but has settled down now and at peace with her decision.

BlueMarigold · 22/02/2022 09:00

@Piggywaspushed

The accommodation talk link was on the same link as the offer holder days link.

cariadambyth · 22/02/2022 09:05

@BlueMarigold, I’m so glad your DD is happy with her decision. I think it’s the uncertainty they find so unsettling so hopefully everything will feel a bit calmer for us all on this thread once decisions are made.

Wheresthebeach · 22/02/2022 11:25

@Piggywaspushed We're waiting to hear from Swansea about an open day. Its quite irritating as we've chased. We'd like to get it all done and dusted as it were.
After Southampton I'd like DD to go up to Liverpool but I think if she likes Portsmouth, and assuming we get an offer holders day from Swansea then she won't bother as its a full day out.

Wheresthebeach · 22/02/2022 11:25

Hope it all goes well @OrangeCinnamonCroissant

Monkey2001 · 22/02/2022 13:13

Wordle fans may like to try Quordle - you do 4 simultaneous wordles and it feels less random.

I managed to embarrass DS by sharing my BYRDLE with the rugby chat group I stead of just with him. He replied before he realised it was on the rugby group, then deleted his in horror, told me to delete mine, and in moment of incompetence I deleted it just for me, so could no longer delete for the group! Oops 😳

scabby1 · 22/02/2022 13:38

Thanks @ decorhate

mummyinbeds · 22/02/2022 15:38

@Monkey2001 thanks for the extra distraction to my working day 😁

BlueMarigold · 22/02/2022 15:45

I love Quordle and Dordle!

Piggywaspushed · 22/02/2022 16:39

I actually succeeded at the quordle today but one of those spellings was totally made up.

Heifer · 22/02/2022 16:53

Oh that's fun but I didn't manage to get all 4 words, just 3 and run out of goes. It's a bit of a headfeck though as I'm not sure whether its best to stick with 1 word until it's solved or jump around the board. I love that it's got a practice area as I hate waiting until the next day. It's like watching a series on BBC after binge watching netflix :-)

@EwwSprouts - looks like I'm going to miss you at York tomorrow as I'm still suffering with this cold. Not even Covid just a cold but on day 5 and still sound like I smoke 50 Benson & Hedges daily and blowing my nose sounding like a foghorn. I felt so sorry for DH last night as I've kept him awake since Friday coughing & spluttering etc that I gave up going to sleep and came downstairs to sit up sleep on the sofa. Bless him, he hasn't moaned once - well not about me being ill anyway.

Hope you enjoy York, let me know what you think. DH will be taking DD.
