Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

No news Crazy Her first exam should have finished at 11, but she has been given rest breaks for the first time, so not really sure how those work. Next one starts at 1.30, so hopefully not too much delay, and she has time for a decent break and lunch.

Isthisjustnormal · 21/02/2022 12:47

@singingstones - AAA offer for ds from Exeter to add to the list when you redo. Thanks!

Oblomov22 · 21/02/2022 13:06

Thanks Singing. Loving seeing all the Firms, for people like Piggy who have pushed the button.

Fferny1 · 21/02/2022 13:37

I've been organising today.
Booked Ds into two consecutive applicant days in Aberystwyth & Bangor.
Plus an overnight stay in Aberystwyth in a place in the town centre & 200 yards from the beach. Heres hoping the weather will be good. Luckily the Bangor day can start at lunchtime so Ds can sleep in a bit on Sunday.
DS had a lovely personal letter from Aber. talking about the points he brought up in his personal statement & how their degree will help him achieve them.
I think I will be devastated if he or I don't like the place as I've set my heart on it 😂

Wheresthebeach · 21/02/2022 13:40

@Isthisjustnormal Congrats!

Fruitygal · 21/02/2022 13:57

@Fferny1 getting two ticked off in a weekend is properly impressive x

crazycrofter · 21/02/2022 14:28

Well done @Fferny1! Dh went to Aber (and chose it over Bangor). I don’t think you can fail to like it really. Although I remember a very windy open day when I applied there which was slightly off putting! I wasn’t so keen on Bangor when we holidayed near there in the summer, but it’s very close to Snowdonia, so good for visits!

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2022 14:48

Have to be honest, DS1 hated Aber...

I thought it seemed nice enough but it takes a certain type to want to be at uni somewhere so isolated and windswept. Its shops are very limited too. It is a bit like time travelling to a 1980s town.

Loads of people love it though. Anyone on MN who went there always speaks very fondly of it.

mummyinbeds · 21/02/2022 15:13

@Fferny1 please can you provide some feedback on your Aberystwyth and Bangor visits. They are both on Year 12 DD's rather long shortlist and are a long way for a quick visit. She also has St. Andrews and Plymouth!!

Fferny1 · 21/02/2022 15:13

@piggy dd1 hated it too. But she was only there for a field trip & overnighted in uni accommodation. She couldn't see the appeal of cold British beaches & faded seaside towns. We lived in HK next to the beach for several years & he loves beaches. Plus he's very British, whereas the rest of my kids are more international (all biracial). He loves Rugby & the Gym and isn't interested in getting drunk & nightclubs. But I'm sure he'll change 😂. He did originally say he wanted to be in a city so I guess we'd better do Oxford Brooks as well.

crazycrofter · 21/02/2022 17:17

@mummyinbeds is a beach the main criteria? Grin

Seeline · 21/02/2022 17:22

DD has come home quite bright! I think it helped that the man invigilating her room (which was for those allowed breaks), had a service dog who paid an occasional visit to the area at the back where they were taking their breaks 😁

Fferny1 · 21/02/2022 17:26

Sure I will @mummyinbeds.
Your dd's choices are certainly very geographically spread out and yes she must really like Seaside towns.

GoldenRuby · 21/02/2022 17:30

Thanks @singingstones. Still no more offers here - DD is feeling quite despondent. Her mocks start on Weds so she is on study leave. She is getting anxious that she won't have her offers/rejections until Easter or beyond, and says it will be doubly hard revising for the real thing when you don't know where you might end up.

mummyinbeds · 21/02/2022 18:33

@Fferny1 @crazycrofter yes she does like a beach - Swansea and Sussex are also on the list 😂

whatsnext2 · 21/02/2022 19:11

Checking in again, looks like Reading (bbb) York been completely rubbish at Offer days.

Fruitygal · 21/02/2022 19:34

@whatsnext2 what happened at York?

whatsnext2 · 21/02/2022 19:42
@whatsnext2 what happened at York?
Joint honours. UCAS submitted early Jan, offer from York, however only online offer days, 1st for English 23 February, 2nd politics 6 April. Took the English one but then couldn’t book politics. On emailing was told only allowed one offer day (even though online).

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 21/02/2022 20:02

Thanks so much @singinstones

Cardiff interview/ audition on Fri, City music Festival on Sunday, Southampton interview Monday. Fingers crossed for offers next week

@scabby1 Ds has mocks for the next couple of weeks so will leave that conversation till they are over. Not sure about Sheffield but I don’t think there is a huge rush to apply for accommodation at Leeds. So he may just wait to see if Bristol offer or not.

singingstones · 21/02/2022 20:12

That's pretty crap of York @whatsnext2
Where else is your DD considering?

Fruitygal · 21/02/2022 20:12

@whatsnext2 goodness so no in person ones at all? That's crazy! And only allowed to book one online - I would get DC to contact the departments as joint honours needs a visit to both departments (in person).

singingstones · 21/02/2022 20:14

That's a busy few days Orange
Hope she's feeling positive about it all and that everything goes well

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2022 20:14

My experience of offer days is they are all on the same bloody day!

Sheffield has a choose your own room accommodation system. Bit odd.

Piggywaspushed · 21/02/2022 20:15

When people reject offers is it just me that feels bad? The man at Sheffield was so nice and I feel like we have been mean.
