Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Ds had a postcard from Sheffield today encouraging him to check his emails for applicant days. Which I had been nagging him about for weeks & he swore he had not had anything Hmm

Sounds like my Ds, honestly you'd think he was still in year 10 or something and Uni days were years off. It's a good job one of his friends has had an offer for the same Uni and his Mum has told me about offer days etc, DS would be none the wiser... Confused

There are certain Unis that keep cropping up that seem to be remembered with fondness, Keele is definitely one! Lancs, Aberystwyth, Southampton and Leicester also spring to mind. I wonder what it is that makes it so 🤔 they should bottle it!

Now someone is going to say they studied at one of those Unis and hated it !

crazycrofter · 17/02/2022 13:52

That’s good to hear, I studied at Leicester and dh went to Aberystwyth!

Monkey2001 · 17/02/2022 13:57

I think most people are positive about where they studied because most of us had a great time! Bristol for me, lots of my friends stayed or came back.

ExtremelyDelighted · 17/02/2022 14:25

Portsmouth for me - meh. It was ok. Don't look back with any real fondness and only have very vague (Christmas card) contact with anyone from there now.

ZittiEBuoni · 17/02/2022 14:29

Yikes, just heard all schools in the area are closing tomorrow thanks to Storm Eunice.

ExtremelyDelighted · 17/02/2022 14:31

DS was supposed to be going to a taster lecture at Winchester tomorrow, cancelled due to Storm Eunice. He's booked in for the full offer-holder day there on Saturday too (we live fairly locally), hopefully that will go ahead.

Wheresthebeach · 17/02/2022 14:49

Fingers crossed open days take place on Saturday. DH and DD off to Southampton

Fruitygal · 17/02/2022 15:13

One of my DSs went to Portsmouth!! Loved the place - great for food and Gunwharf quays these days for mum’s visiting …. Thai food and cocktails 🍹 fondly remembered and the historic dockyards - looked after well too! So if looking for a mid range uni then I’d recommend for earth sciences.

Fruitygal · 17/02/2022 15:15

Apologies to all somehow the autocorrect has given my mums an apostrophe ?!?!?!

Fruitygal · 17/02/2022 15:17

DS was going to go to Keele and the old building was pretty but much of it was not - they hadn’t built the new accommodation they have now and some was left over from the 50s-60s it was truly grim. BTW there are pigs 🐖 buried in the grounds there!

Fruitygal · 17/02/2022 15:23

@KingscoteStaff wondered if you know anywhere good for breakfast and/or dinner in Durham in the week. Going to stay over as even as the king of early stars and long drives in a day the DH has conceded that 4-5hrs each way may need an over night stay

ExtremelyDelighted · 17/02/2022 15:32

I love the city of Portsmouth itself and still go there a lot. The uni was the meh bit. It was a very long time ago though. Indeed it was a poly not a uni then.

Monkey2001 · 17/02/2022 17:27

Our school has also gone on line tomorrow. We are supposed to be driving to Scotland tomorrow for DS1's 21st, taking Newcastle in on the way up, but that means leaving Bristol early morning, which met office are advising against. Might have to cut the Newcastle plan.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/02/2022 17:30

Just heard our school is closed tomorrow too @ZittiEBuoni Is anyone else panicking about storm damage? We have trees all around out property and a roof that's almost 100 years old, I've just had a big repair done to my car and am now terrified that either a tree or parts of my roof are going to fall on it - there's nowhere that isn't within falling range! Shock

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/02/2022 17:32

Oh no @Monkey2001, please don't drive anywhere tomorrow, it sounds like it's going to be awful.

We have overhead cables here so I'm expecting us to have no power tomorrow, better do a lot of work this evening...

ZittiEBuoni · 17/02/2022 17:40

I'm nervous too, JustHere, we're on top of a hill in a coastal area that gets a lot of windy weather anyway, but expecting this to be pretty scary.

Bin day too! Might have to give that a miss...

Piggywaspushed · 17/02/2022 17:41

I was just wondering what happens to bin day...

ExtremelyDelighted · 17/02/2022 17:43

Feeling a bit twitchy too, we're not in a read area but its going to be bad everywhere.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/02/2022 18:06

Don’t put your bins out!!! 😮

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/02/2022 18:08

@ZittiEBuoni you’re not Cornwall are you? They are going to take the brunt by the looks of it but to be honest even the lightest area look like 60+ mph.

I’ve told the DSs to make sure all laptops, iPads and phones are fully charged by bedtimes. I suspect our power will be gone by 4am.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/02/2022 18:10

If you’ve got a trampoline then strap it down, I’ve seen too many videos of those going flying in big storms.

ZittiEBuoni · 17/02/2022 18:13

Not Cornwall, JustHere, we're further east, so I think we'll escape the absolute worst, but anything could happen still.

Definitely giving the bins a miss!
