Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@crazycrofter someone posted a copy of that email on WIKAU page. That's a long wait.

Heifer · 15/02/2022 20:27

@crazycrofter - how much does she want to go to Bath? Is it her favourite by a mile?

Isthisjustnormal · 15/02/2022 20:36

@crazycrofter: Ds got that bath email too (for comp sci). It has been his favourite but given that York is his second prefered and has already opened accommodation it’s all a bit frustrating..

congrats on the Durham offer @Fruitygal!

crazycrofter · 15/02/2022 20:47

Almost the same scenario here @Isthisjustnormal, she thinks Bath ‘ought’ to be her favourite as it’s so highly rated and it’s known for good placement years. It’s also her favourite city but she’s not visited the uni. If Bath don’t offer, it’s between York and Southampton. And like you say - York have opened their accommodation already.

Shimy · 15/02/2022 20:48

Congratulations to all those with new offers. Such a relief.

DS also got the same email that @crazycrofter dc received. He yelled, 'Mum, I've got a notification from Bath but too scared to click on it'. I sat down purposefully to give him some reassurance...and it was just a silly message saying wait till April, so Angry.

scabby1 · 15/02/2022 20:48

@Fruitygal congratulations on Durham!

You were asking earlier about Economics. Ds was all set to apply for Law when he had a last minute change of heart and opted for Economics and Politics instead. He doesn’t do economics A level but does do maths. As a starting point we found a thread in the higher education section called something like “Economics degree without A level economics?” really helpful in understanding the different types of econ degrees on offer (eg those that lean towards policy and those that are very heavily mathematical). Posts by Phphion and Needsmoresleep were particularly helpful.

Fiddlersgreen · 15/02/2022 20:49
@singingstones, if people can afford it, the approach of parents pay for accommodation and minimum loan covers everything else is very popular.
How often is the accommodation paid for, in the first year, is that termly?

Decorhate · 15/02/2022 20:56

@Fruitygal Great news!

@Fiddlersgreen It varies. When Dd was at Leeds we paid monthly over 7/8 months. Bath was termly.

I’d love to know why it’s taking Bath so long this year. Are they waiting to see if those who have already had offers accept them before they offer more?

NCTDN · 15/02/2022 21:10

@Fruitygal remind me what course the Durham offer is for?
I'm confused about firm and insurance offers. I thought that whatever you put as firm you had to take? So if you put a lower one first then a higher one as insurance, you couldn't take the higher one anyway because you'd firmed the lower one?Confused

Fiddlersgreen · 15/02/2022 21:14

Great news @scabby1 and @Fruitygal!

@Decorhate thank you, just trying to work out what to expect - seems it’s all unknown anyway but glad to know it differs so will look at all the scenarios

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 21:16

@scabby1 thanks for that info Re economics!

Thanks all for the good wishes - it’s for biological science @NCTDN

Bath sounds like Durham lots of silly emails with update to your application but no offers for ages. Went on TSR tonight and Durham pages are full of brutal law rejections for kids with A*s and As because they had the odd 7 or 6 in their gcses?!? Want to give them all a hug 🤗

Decorhate · 15/02/2022 21:29

@Fruitygal Certain unis/courses have always had to reject very high calibre candidates as they are so oversubscribed but I suspect there will be a lot more of that this year. Our kids are bearing the brunt of all the accommodations made for the previous 2 years cohorts.

cariadambyth · 15/02/2022 21:36

Thanks @BlueMarigold, that’s really useful. We will use this method once we’ve done the offer holder days I imagine.
Fab news @Fruitygal, congratulations.

EwwSprouts · 15/02/2022 21:38

Delighted to see more offers coming in.

@Fruitygal Whoop! Thrilled for your DD. I shall now go round Durham open day thinking does that face look even vaguely familiar from Sheffield? [grin[]

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 21:55

@EwwSprouts thanks - the lucky charms of this thread worked it’s magic ! likewise regarding the offer day!

@Fruitygal I'm glad DS didn't apply to Durham. I really wanted him to have it as a possible insurance, although I was worried about their rejection rate but felt with his course (not the most popular) he should be okay but he didn't want to in the end due to distance. Your comment about people being rejected because they have the odd 7 or 6 really brought it home as DS had a 7 in maths ...yikes!!

22Newnames · 15/02/2022 21:59

I have just sneakily checked DS’s email to see if there was anything from Bath but nothing there. At least there isn’t a rejection either.
Frustrating still waiting for 3. I know Durham and Warwick have made some offers for his course but I also know they were so far all to early entry candidates so I’m hoping they will soon get round to the rest of the applications rather than they are waiting for rejections in order to be able to make more offers.

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 21:59

@EwwSprouts anything from St. Andrews yet ?

Shimy · 15/02/2022 22:05

Aren't they just? I always knew this yr was going to be very competitive. what with a high birth yr and pandemic on top. I'm seeing people talking about predictions of AAB and ABB applying to universities that in times past would've taken much lower grades, not that those universities aren't good, they are, it's just the offers they are making seem very very high.

EwwSprouts · 15/02/2022 22:10

@Fruitygal Just resounding silence. Not sure if the strike will be impacting the offers process as I believe they do actually read personal statements.

@Shimy DS is not a law applicant but he has a Durham offer with 2x6 gcse so I would suggest other depts are more flexible...or just less popular.

Shimy · 15/02/2022 22:14

@EwwSprouts Ah I see! so maybe he had a good chance after all. Fantastic offer your DS has there Smile. DS would've applied for Business Management.

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 22:19

I think you can use the stats on discover uni to look at previous entry - not so much with the top grades as it counts all A levels in the ucas points not just top three but it you want to judge whether in previous years they took more lower grades than advertised it’s obvious they did. I think unis are being super careful not to offer too low otherwise they may get stung again but it’s a balancing act so some are offering in chunks and I’m wondering if they are waiting to see what is firmed, rejected or insured before offering some more. Clearing could be more lively than the last couple of years.

BTW if your child has Lancaster as an option they offer £2k if the child firms them and gets AAA. Cardiff used to do something similar ……

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 22:22

@EwwSprouts DD still has a single friend with a St. Andrews offer for languages …. Loads are still waiting often with Durham and Bath so very frustrated

singingstones · 15/02/2022 23:09

A bit slow, but here's the video, @cariadambyth

Congrats on the Durham offer, Fruity!

Wheresthebeach · 15/02/2022 23:19

@Fruitygal Congrats - that’s fab news

I think it’s so hard others are still waiting. This is a tough system
