Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Well done to everyone receiving new offers today. Thanks for the insight on student finances it was really helpful for a first timer.

@Volterra was your DS applying for maths at Warwick? DS is still waiting for an offer does anyone know if offers have been made or is everyone still waiting?

Piggywaspushed · 15/02/2022 16:33

Bath fruity ?

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2022 16:48

@Fruitygal your friend's problem is that the top places want Further Maths (don't care about Economics).

I know 2 young men who had a great time doing Economics at Exeter and have both landed very good jobs in London. One did a year abroad (he chose Australia, but the languages might open up more choices).

Piggywaspushed · 15/02/2022 17:13

Bath do a good line in MFL + business/ economics iirc.

I think lots of the top places drop the requirement for further maths (and in some cases any maths) when you combine Econ with a MFL. Eg Warwick will do Econ&MFL with an AAB offer and no maths required (Econ alone needs maths and standard offer is Astar A A)

You are all so wise and knowledgeable, so many questions are always answered so thoroughly and in such fab detail, I feel I contribute very little but learn so much.
Would anybody be able to repost the video explaining why it’s sometimes a good idea to firm a lower offer than the insurance one please?

Decorhate · 15/02/2022 18:29

Great news @scabby1 !!

@Fruitygal The top unis for Economics are usually deemed to be Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Warwick.

Ds is applying for Economics & Politics rather than straight Economics and did not fancy any of those...

Bristol & Bath are both strong, Leeds, Nottingham too. There are obviously difference in the courses & my kids generally had strong views on the university location too.

If you do a search you should find some old threads where people give opinions on the different courses.

Delphigirl · 15/02/2022 18:29

I was looking at this just the other day @cariadambyth because my DS has chosen geog, Econ and Spanish a levels and I was worried about the lack of maths and wondering if she should do politics instead. Was pleased to see the Spanish ameliorated the lack of maths for the purposes of applications (but presumably there is still heavy maths content in the degree which the linguists will have to deal with)…

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 18:34

These comments are amazing !! Thanks so much I have summarised the points in an email and sent to my friend - she’s says thanks and wow! She’s scared of MN but I’ve told her how lovely this thread is xxx

BlueMarigold · 15/02/2022 18:45

@cariadambyth

I don’t know the link but I think the advice is put the unis in the order you want to go to them not put the higher offer one firm if you prefer the lower offer one.

The example is: If Uni A wants AAA and Uni B wants ABB but you really want to go to uni B. Firm Uni B and put uni A as the insurance.

On results day, you get A*AC. Uni B say no because you didn’t make their offer, Uni A looks and let’s you in anyway because they had spaces.

In this scenario if had put Uni A as firm, you would have got in anyway but Uni B wouldn’t have the chance to say no. So they are saying that if you put your genuine favourite first, on the day, you want your firm choice to have first choice on whether to take you or not.

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 18:47

DD just got an offer from Durham! Was in a meeting and she texted me x

KingscoteStaff · 15/02/2022 19:21

That's fantastic @Fruitygal - DS is in his second year at Durham and loving every minute!

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 19:29

@KingscoteStaff - thanks she’s smiling 🙂- We know a friend with her DS doing law and another doing something obscure but no one else currently - several who graduated 2 years ago - what’s he studying? Which college was he given for first year?

Oblomov22 · 15/02/2022 19:31

Congrats Fruitygal.
Hope you feel ok Seeline.

BlueMarigold · 15/02/2022 19:32

Huge congratulations @Fruitygal!

KingscoteStaff · 15/02/2022 19:32

He's doing Politics and Philosophy (or 'Chatting', as his sister calls it...) and he had a Bailey college.

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 19:35

@Seeline hope you feel better soon x

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 19:37

DS1 bestie from primary did P&P at York - works for an MP now - great course and probably a little more complicated than chatting!

22Newnames · 15/02/2022 19:43

Congrats @Fruitygal!

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2022 20:04

Congratulations @Fruitygal, is that all the offers in now?

Medic mum takes another deep breath here and prepared to wait at least another month....

Fonty · 15/02/2022 20:14

Welcome @scabby1 & congrats on Notts offer.

@Fruitygal fab news re Durham. A bit out of date now, but old friend of mine did economics at Exeter. She loved it. Went on to work for big city firm. Hedge fund manager now.

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 20:15

@Monkey2001 yes it’s her final one ! She’s super lucky she has friends rejected from Oxford and Cambridge who have no other offers yet because they’ve got Bath, St. Andrews, UCL and Edinburgh etc on their lists who offer late and DDs bestie is waiting on medical school offers (still nothing) DD said tonight I’d give up all my favourite places and go to my least favourite choice if that meant my friend could have a place at medical school as she’d be a great doctor. Where is your DC wanting to go ?

crazycrofter · 15/02/2022 20:16

Dd had an email from Bath today - to say that they’re still deciding and she might have to wait until 30th April Shock

Fruitygal · 15/02/2022 20:18

@crazycrofter that’s crazy !! I think they should be forced to offer by the end of Feb if no interview needed and end of March if interviews required

Heifer · 15/02/2022 20:26

Great news @Fruitygal. I bet your DD is so chuffed.

I'm trying to sell DD the idea that applying for accommodation at Nottingham for 31 weeks is great as it's so much cheaper. Yes I know it means that she has to pack all her stuff up at Christmas & Easter but we would have picked her up anyway , yes I know it's a faff but it's almost £2k cheaper oh and it means she could go catered and ensuite (sold on the idea now)... I can't work out how many you need to apply for at Nottingham, it looks like most of the information is in the portal which you can't access until you've firmed...
I can see with York you apply for 7 options.
