Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Decorhate I agree this year have been left out to dry. I see one of the Aqa exam ‘setters’ when I swim, he said this year would have it the toughest so far. He said he felt sorry for my 2 having to sit the exams this year.

Half term now, revision time, anyone else realising how fast time is going?!

Piggywaspushed · 11/02/2022 21:08

That was tactful of them sazzy!

Decorhate · 11/02/2022 21:09

The way it’s turning out, I’m glad Ds opted to apply to only solid or safe choices. Hopefully will lessen the chance of disappointment on results day.

Fruitygal · 11/02/2022 22:33

DD has courses where the top one us 2 grades below her predicted and insurance is 4 grades below. Despite her last 3 sets of mocks being on or above her offers. She wanted to have safer choices especially when she’s not been physical well fir 2 years

Fruitygal · 12/02/2022 07:08

En route to Sheffield! We have snackage, I've done the Wordle and DD is catching up on her sleep in the back!!

Piggywaspushed · 12/02/2022 07:08

I'll be the one who looks like she has had ZERO SLEEP fruity...

Fruitygal · 12/02/2022 07:32

@Piggywaspushed I’m the one with the make up on to cover up the tiredness!! Is this the insurance choice?

Monkey2001 · 12/02/2022 08:12

Are you two going to be at any of the same talks? I have never knowingly met anyone I knew on Mumsnet, although i.think DS1 must have met the DC of a couple of people.

Decorhate · 12/02/2022 08:18

Dd was on the same course as the Ds of another MNetter. Not close friends but they have definitely met.

Monkey2001 · 12/02/2022 08:53

It looks very likely that some Biology/Sheffield/Nottingham/hockey DC might meet (@Heifer DD looking particularly likely!) and I think the Oxford 2 must sometimes be at joint classics things although doing different types of Classics.

BlueMarigold · 12/02/2022 09:06

Even if they did meet, how would they know?

Oblomov22 · 12/02/2022 09:06

Sorry to hear that Decorhate.
Like Heifer, I'm a bit worried about Nottingham, we've heard nothing.

Heifer · 12/02/2022 09:08

I did think that @Monkey2001 but we're not going to the Sheffield day now. DD is set on Nottingham as firm. Just need to double check York is ok for insurance (she didn't love it last time but knows it's a good uni/course and they offered of BBB, so would be great as an insurance).

I've meet Mns before, from my days chatting in the Bar thread. When I moved up North they arranged to meet me to welcome me to the area :-) was lovely, havent seen them for 5 years at least but we do still chat on FB etc.

Heifer · 12/02/2022 09:12

Has anyone else been to the offer open days at Nottingham this year?
DD and DH did really enjoy it and gave them nothing to worry about. It's just the admin side that worries me tbh.

Chewbecca · 12/02/2022 09:42

I went to Nottingham OHD this week with DS, very happy with it too. What admin bothers you? Hopefully you know they’ve postponed the accommodation entry opening date this year? I am hoping DS’s 5th offer or rejection is in by then.

Fruitygal · 12/02/2022 09:48

Arrived in Sheffield !! Bloody cold 🥶 but it is up ⬆️ north

Heifer · 12/02/2022 10:31

Hi Chew, I only knew re accommodation change because someone else mentioned it on here and I then took a look - it def said March previously on the website. Nottingham haven't mentioned anything about the change in any of their 100s of emails (no more than other uni emails tbf). The admin that bothers me is some things I've read online plus so far, 2 emails with log in details didn't work, received a letter saying that DD didn't attend the open day so would she like another slot, when she had attended, scanned the QR code and registered and lastly received another email saying that the start date we originally received may have been wrong. Nothing on its own to worry about but not sending great competence vibes :-)
BlueMarigold · 12/02/2022 10:32

@Oblomov22 why are you worried about Nottingham?

Piggywaspushed · 12/02/2022 11:39

Not sure yet fruity! It's a bit bracing today isn't it??!

Chewbecca · 12/02/2022 12:24

Totally understand what you mean, I feel similarly about Loughborough - they have sad they will send stuff within certain timeframes, then nothing. It’s probably no reflection on how much DS would enjoy the course and his time there but you can’t help feel off put by these things when perhaps there isn’t much between them anyway.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 12/02/2022 13:31

Sorry not been around all ...Will catch up in a bit. Had an MBA Assignment to get in.

Hope the Sheffield open day goes well.

Fruitygal · 12/02/2022 16:43

Sheffield offer day was excellent definitely one of the two!! Really friendly, research and kit impressive. Buffet lunch with great selection (yes you can win me over with salmon en croute, mini savoury croissant 🥐 and chicken kebabs) 😂🤣

NCTDN · 12/02/2022 16:53

Ooh you'd win me over with that too!! Maybe dd should've applied there!

Piggywaspushed · 12/02/2022 17:07

We didn't get a buffet lunch Shock
