Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thank you for a new thread@Orangecinnamoncroissant. Just place making. I am following all the ups and downs of your DCs with interest, but I haven't got much to say. DD had her mocks early January, but still no results and nothing from Bristol either.

Zebracat · 07/02/2022 22:33

Thank you for the 5hread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant.
Our girl still has covid.she’s lost over a week and is still quite sick, she says..I understand she can go back after 10 days but I’m not sure she will be well enough.. I’m not massively sympathetic to Ill health , I think she gets really comfortable with lying around all day, plenty of energy for watching crap and chatting , but if I suggest she does an hours work she reports that she just can’t. She does have a rotten cough though, and is testing positive. It’s probably me.

Thanks orange. Onwards, as Boris would apparently say.

ExtremelyDelighted · 08/02/2022 07:06

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and also (Hampshire person checking in) yes to having seen the Alec Baldwin thing, I follow Hampshire Live too, very bizarre!

@singingstones thanks again for the updated spreadsheet, all present and correct here.

Isthisjustnormal · 08/02/2022 07:11

Thanks @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and @singingstones for keeping us all on track.

Dd tested positive for covid on Sunday, so feeling a bit hopeless about ds's 18 plans coming up...

Just catching up on the updates on content: ds reports some gaps on psychology and comp sci but not much change in maths. DD having been off school yesterday hasn't had a teachers view of GCSEs yet so I need to catch up on those. Started in a new role yesterday so was shattered and asleep at 8:30!

I do get frustrated with the amount of admin these changes create for teachers, kids and parents! DD has a series of checklists printed out for all her GCSE subjects for revision which we'll need to go through and rework. We'll make sure that happens, but I can't help thinking about those of her mates with less engaged parents who may continue to work through text books or exercise books in their revision - I wonder how much support school will give there to ensure the kids 'miss out' exactly the right things. In some ways A levels are easier as there are few subjects to be on board with - I do hate GCSEs!

Volterra · 08/02/2022 07:17

Thank you Orange and Singingstones.

22Newnames · 08/02/2022 07:25

Thanks singing

singingstones · 08/02/2022 07:29

Love the Alton article - I do have a bit of a soft spot for Alec B, even though I'm sure he's a nightmare handful in real life.

Wheresthebeach · 08/02/2022 07:49

Thanks Orange and Singing
DD off school I’ll so we haven’t had teachers reaction yet. Seems a really mixed bag.

DoggerelBank · 08/02/2022 07:51

Thanks, Orange and Singing!

Wheresthebeach · 08/02/2022 08:16

I agree IsIt I think a lot will depend on the teachers. Much harder with GCSE's than A levels as there is just so many more subjects.

If we don't get some sort idea from the school about ti all I'll write to the HofSixth asking about what sort of grade knowing the core content would represent. I suspect the answer will be 'your guess is as good as mine' but you never know. The real problem is if they say 'our understanding is....' will I believe that that's what will actually happen or will they pull the rug out from under the kids?

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 08/02/2022 08:19

I don't know why @ExtremelyDelighted @singingstones I just found it so funny, him walking past the kebab shop and all that. I used to like Alec when we were younger! A few years ago a friend and I heard Russel Crowe was filming by the coast and staying at a nearby hotel , so we spent lots of time in a nearby pub hoping to meet him Grin
