I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Zebracat don’t worry about the asthma meds unless you are told about such things you won’t know - if she has problems on this combo in future ask to see a respiratory consultant who can tweak further.

As for the unis what us the lowest offer those unis report they offer before contextual drops?

Zebracat · 28/11/2021 12:08

I think they are all AAA, except for Cambridge, which is lower but still a very long shot!.

Monkey2001 · 28/11/2021 12:26

@Zebracat bit late now, but this one at Newcastle would be BBC if she applied through the Partners scheme (which she easily qualifies for). www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/y001/

Monkey2001 · 28/11/2021 12:28

That Newcastle one is also good for History and Philosophy as you can choose most arts/humanities and standard offer AAB.

Zebracat · 28/11/2021 12:57

@Monkey2001. Thanks, you know so much. We did look at Newcastle, but it’s a stretch geographically, and she’s also a bit worried by party reputations. But it is a seriously good offer. And, as an insurance, it would work. I’m so worried she won’t get offers, or will get offers but then not make the grades.

Monkey2001 · 28/11/2021 13:13

@Zebracat my DS doesn't drink so will not be partying so much if he gets into Newcastle, there are quieter accommodation options. But I get that it is a long way away from most of England!

KingscoteStaff · 28/11/2021 14:10

The Ocean at the end of the Lane last night (AMAZING, by the way) was 70ish% masks.

Zebracat · 28/11/2021 14:50

I think quiet accommodation could be really helpful. Proper snowing here in the Midlands!

Hattifatteners · 28/11/2021 15:03

That's so exciting @Zebracat! I am from a country that gets proper winter every year and I do miss it.

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 28/11/2021 15:08

@Zebracat we live near the south coast but were supposed to be spending the day in Birmingham yesterday, decided against in case it got heavier / icy by the time we needed to leave but have enjoyed seeing snowy pics from relatives.

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail thanks for comments re St Mary's. I wish we had looked into it a bit sooner, it was next on the list but we felt saturated with info and stopped. DS is really dither on his 5th choice so this might be a good option.

Zebracat · 28/11/2021 15:20

Pic for the snow deprived.I swear I am 6 years old whenever it snows.

Lovely picture, but hope it stays was away from Bristol as DS has driving test tomorrow morning. I assume they cancel if it snows.

ealingwestmum · 28/11/2021 16:10

Best of luck to him tomorrow Monkey!

icanbewhatiwant · 28/11/2021 16:23

@Fruitygal thanks for the all the useful info.

@Piggywaspushed just looked at Keele, thanks. No philosophy with history. It's there with politics on on its own.

@Monkey2001 thanks. Have forwarded it to Ds. Not that he reads my messages.

I went to a Christmas fayre with dh earlier. Ds messaged asking what time I'd be home as he needed to get the train to go to watch football, he said no one is home. I thought it was odd he was worried at leaving ds3 home alone, he's not usually bothered. We got home and he waiting for us...I didn't realise he actually wanted a lift to the station, he'd been to a party last night, lots of alcohol no doubt, so didn't think he should drive. Quite rightly so...but I didn't even think of that. I'm glad he was sensible anyway.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/11/2021 16:24

@Monkey2001 yes...good luck to Ds.

Piggywaspushed · 28/11/2021 16:27

Given Keele's reputation for joint degrees, I am surprised ican. That's a same!

Good luck tomorrow, monkeyjr.

Fruitygal · 28/11/2021 16:37

@Monkey2001 good luck with driving test tomorrow

Piggywaspushed · 28/11/2021 17:16

Its snowing here!

The DfE have just emailed all secondary heads to tell them to mandate masks in communal areas/transport.

Then there is a bit about SI which is impossible to understand.

It is massively going to confuse people if they have to isolate for some close contacts and not others.

Decorhate · 28/11/2021 17:19

Yes @Piggywaspushed my understanding is that it’s different rules if someone is diagnosed with the new variant

Wonder if we will manage to keep going till the end of term.

Wheresthebeach · 28/11/2021 17:36

Oh wish we had snow in London…

Interesting about masks @Piggywaspushed…I didn’t think indoors was announced in any way so I guess DofE is looking at absences maybe?

Feeling increasingly worried that exams won’t happen which puts more pressure on mocks…

Wheresthebeach · 28/11/2021 17:38

Yes isolate if new strain I suspect until they are confident that the vaccine works against it. I presume that means that all orc tests routinely confirm strain?

Oblomov21 · 28/11/2021 17:51

Good luck monkey.

Fruitygal · 28/11/2021 18:17

@Wheresthebeach PCR standard testing does not pick out strain as this is a more complex process. About 50,000 of all the tests per week are variant checked.

@Piggywaspushed masks in all corridors and public transport is a basic provision that DDs school never stopped?

To prevent spread if we don’t know how the strain may react to the vaccine - the kids need to wear masks in class. DD decided she wants to go to all her Christmas stuff so said would prefer they brought back masks in class so things aren’t shut down again.

Wheresthebeach · 28/11/2021 18:25

@Fruitygal so how will people know? Or is this one of those things announced with no thought !

Fruitygal · 28/11/2021 18:33

@Wheresthebeach - heaven knows ?!?
