I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thanks @Fruitygal I will see if he’s set up the accounts and if he’ll let me access them to have a look. He’s only visited one of his 5 choices and it’s not one we’ve had an offer for yet. He says he doesn’t have a preference at the moment so we really need to get visiting!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 11/12/2021 13:15

Congratulations, collywobble. Is an A in EOQ on the cards?

crazycrofter · 11/12/2021 13:57

DD’s emails happened to be open on our pc earlier so I checked the email from Southampton and there was a link to book offer holder days there. She’s not noticed it, so I’m guessing there might be the same from Manchester too. I really hope they do ahead in person. She’s got her grade 6 singing in an hour so I won’t mention booking in until after that - one stressful thing at a time!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 11/12/2021 14:20

Good luck for the singing exam, crazy - hope she’s in fine voice and it goes really well for her!

crazycrofter · 11/12/2021 14:32

Thanks @Alsoplayspiccolo! She’s never done a live singing exam before! She did a few flute grades, the last one of which was quite traumatic and then she did grade 4 singing online (recorded). I really hope it’s not a disaster!

Monkey2001 · 11/12/2021 16:08

@crazycrofter hope the singing exam went well. Was it ABRSM or Trinity? It is nice to get the result within a day for Trinity, the wait can feel long for ABRSM.

Zebracat · 11/12/2021 16:08

Spent the morning helping with the friends application for Engineering with foundation. It was actually lovely. She is really strong on Maths, and has further maths, but wasn’t encouraged to keep up with stem subjects at Alevel. I really can’t understand why a school wouldnt work hard to keep students in Maths if they enjoy it and are talented. She had done lots of research and knew what she would be getting into. So we just had to structure and strengthen the PS. I told her about Lincoln, because it is so recommended on here, and she is adding it. I think she will be fine.

EwwSprouts · 11/12/2021 16:21

Brilliant list @singingstones!

Congratulations to those who have just got the application in or received offers. Fingers crossed for those sitting mocks or real music exams.

Still one more week of term here. Do admissions departments get a proper holiday over Christmas or do we keep asking our DC if they've checked their email recently?

@Zebracat lovely update.

collywobble · 11/12/2021 16:23

@Alsoplayspiccolo thank you! Yes it's a subject he's passionate about so fingers crossed but you never know. He's said it will help him focus now but I think it's a gamble to firm it and might be better firming a lower offer. We will reserve judgment I think until offer holder days as he's only been to visit Leeds and Loughborough .

My Uni is closed from 23rd until 4th Jan. Might have a flurry next week

Thank you @singingstones for the wonderful list! I've screenshotted as my brain is so sieve like at present.

In particular I couldn't remember all the Oxbridge lot...good luck with the results all! And to your Dd @crazycrofter our last Trinity grade was back within a week I think 🤔. Dd actually doing the performance diploma now and has completely shocked me by planning to sing a German lied at her audition. Southampton one of the few that allows Jazz and Pop I thought she'd go that way!

Thanks @OrangeCinnamonCocktail. DS can expect occasional prodding! They have a task manager system for homework so email is just not on his radar.

crazycrofter · 11/12/2021 18:12

Thanks, it seemed to go ok - she didn’t cry anyway Grin It was Rockschool actually @Monkey2001 so seemed a bit more relaxed than ABRSM? I’m not sure how long the results will be. When is your DD’s audition @OrangeCinnamonCocktail?

Not sure yet, Southampton interview all that apply that meet entry so expecting it to be Feb onwards with that one we have to send a recorded audition in advance. Planning to sort that In Jan. Cardiff no idea especially with the latest variant and Wales being a bi stricter...might all be online.

@singingstones thanks for the updated list!
Lots of offers for our Corona Cohort! Smile
Sending positive vibes to all still waiting for the UCAS acknowledgment that their DCs application has been received and for swift offers!

TizerorFizz · 11/12/2021 18:38

@Zebracat
I would say Lincoln is not that recommended by Engineers. It’s ok but others have a better track record. People like it as a university but it’s not really considered an engineering university.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 11/12/2021 18:49

collywobble, if he really likes it, I’d take the gamble and put it as first choice; DD’s favourite is aspirational (matches her predicted grades but she is worried they are slightly ambitious), but I’m of the view that she’ll regret it if she doesn’t aim high and then ends up getting the grades she needs.
With so much up in the air around exams, uni places etc, I think it’s worth going for broke, knowing that clearing and deferral are safety net options if all else fails.

Glad the exam went well, crazy. I always think singers are very brave - who knows what will come out when you open your mouth under pressure?! Shock

collywobble · 11/12/2021 18:51

@Alsoplayspiccolo that's really good advice thank you. I'm such a pessimist and look at the worst case scenario.

20newnames · 11/12/2021 19:58

@TizerorFizz re Lincoln being recommended by engineers, it depends which engineers you ask! Those that know the detail of the course and facilities and the links with Siemens seem to really rate it. The issue of course is that the engineering department there has only been around ten.years so only producing graduates for about 6 years which means the track record is limited obviously.

This is why they only require BBB to get in despite the facilities, they haven’t (yet?) got the prestige of the top engineering universities which nearly all require A*AA.

It’s a different proposition but a good one if your grades don’t stretch to the top ones or as an insurance.

Zebracat · 11/12/2021 20:56

Thanks again everyone. 4 of her choices were BBB for the foundation courses, which could have been disastrous, so felt quite pleased to get Lincoln on there. She wants to live at home, so her choices are constrained geographically. I don’t know enough to have suggested she widen her research to product design and I think she. Just wants to get it done. A good foundation course will surely steer her if she’s not in quite the right place. I think she’s a quiet kid who could well improve on her predicted grades, in which case she could then get a better offer..

Delphigirl · 11/12/2021 21:06

@Fiddlersgreen there is nothing in DS’s Cardiff offer email about an offer holders day sadly

TizerorFizz · 11/12/2021 22:12

@Zebracat
She wants to live at home? So Lincoln is near? That really makes other very good options impossible. Don’t forget that Siemens in one employer! They won’t take all grads and they certainly won’t offer a broad menu of engineering. I really think product design or product engineering is what you really want. But if Lincoln is the live at home option then suggesting elsewhere won’t be much use. Lincoln is very good at PR.

TizerorFizz · 11/12/2021 22:25

@20newnames
Looking at the tiny number of engineering courses at Lincoln you will be hard pushed to find many engineers who would rate it as an engineering department. It’s very very narrow. Certainly nowhere near as good as a decent poly and seems allied to one employer. So Engineers in many of the major disciplines never will meet anyone who studied at Lincoln because they don’t cover the breadth of engineering. I would also say their mechanical engineering is narrow.

20newnames · 11/12/2021 22:29

@TizerorFizz you seem to have strong opinions about Lincoln. Do you have personal knowledge of graduates from there or have looked into the course content to state it “certainly won’t offer a broad menu of engineering”? In our analysis it is certainly a wider course than York for example.

I am genuinely interested in why you are so anti as DS is planning on putting it as his insurance.

20newnames · 11/12/2021 22:31

@TizerorFizz
We obviously crossed posted. I would disagree with some of your post but will leave it at that rather than get into more debate.
