I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thanks, RHU and Reading are jostling for the last place on DS's UCAS form. I think I marginally favour RHU.

NCTDN · 10/12/2021 21:53

Thanks @DoggerelBank @Shimy for the laugh - sorry if I'm laughing at your expense
@Zebracat is your dd looking at liberal arts?

Nard75 · 10/12/2021 22:12

Congratulations to everyone who received offers this week and good luck to those who have had interviews.

DS eventually submitted his application today at school and has had email back from UCAS to say they had received it. His 5 choices were Maths at Warwick, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham and Aston.

Could someone confirm the next step will he get emails from the unis with offers or would he have to log into ucas site. Also do you only accept 2 offers or can you accept all? Sorry for being dim but this is all new to me and DS isn't one to be forthcoming with information.

Monkey2001 · 10/12/2021 22:21

@ExquisitelyDecorated happy to be corrected! It was mainly on the basis that lots of CCC courses are available in Clearing, and at that point I don't think the universities look at PS, but I could be mistaken. It is great if lots of places are like Lincoln who send out lots of offers but reduce them for the candidates they like best.

@Nard75 once all your decisions are in you can choose your Firm and Insurance which automatically causes the other 3 offers to be rejected. DS's GF got her Maths offer back quite quickly from Birmingham.

Nard75 · 10/12/2021 22:27

Thanks @Monkey2001 I don't think Warwick offer until next year but hopefully he will get offers from the others before then.

crazycrofter · 10/12/2021 22:31

@Nard75 I think you get an email to say that track has been updated every time you get an offer. Glad the form has gone off!

ChristopherTracy · 10/12/2021 22:58

Yes you get an email, that can come some time after the site has updated though - two hours in one of our cases so logging in also useful in the first week after submission.

A lot of our offers seemed to be around 4.30 in the afternoon.

singingstones · 10/12/2021 23:10

Quick update as the thread is nearing an end and lots of lovely new applications and offers to include. Still no form in here but DS's tutor has been texting me questions about his PS tonight so we live in hope that it will go in soon.

Thanks for the new list @singingstones and thanks to everyone for all the support to my endless questions it is invaluable.

Zebracat · 10/12/2021 23:37

@NCTDN. Yes she is, but only at Warwick, she didn’t like any of the other courses we looked at. Historyplus at Birmingham, Exeter, RHUlAnd a very very longshot at Cambridge Arts foundation. What is your dds preferred option?
@Seeline for when it next gets updated, although, hope there might be an offer then too. I love your list, thank you for it.

Volterra · 11/12/2021 08:21

Thanks for the list Singingstones.

Nard75 great news that UCAS form is in. Our DS’s may overlap on a Birmingham application, DS has more to fill in but waiting till MAT results. I think Bath will be first choice though and he needs to decide if he asks Exeter if he can switch his application from the MMath to BSc.

I noticed parents’ evening and report focused a lot on achieving the predicted grades . I think they have tightened up on predictions this year. 2 out of the 3 people I know last year missed their predicted and know of one who was in clearing. Don’t know how representative this is of the whole year.

Was talking to a couple of parents in DS’s year. One was not happy as they wouldn’t predict A* despite him getting one in an extra paper he sat at the end of the summer. Another’s DC has just had predictions increased from AAAB to A starAAA . I’m getting the feeling rightly or wrongly they are working towards getting their predictions to match actual grades achieved. Hope so as DS needs that for both his offers at the moment!

icanbewhatiwant · 11/12/2021 08:30

I just looked at the list. Ds decided not to put Leeds down as they want A in history. He's not sure he will get an A. He wants to go to Sussex so chose universities that might offer lower than Sussex. He put Southampton, Lincoln and I think Gloucestershire. I've never heard of that one. Not sure on 5th. I think it was herts. If they all offer he'd like like Sussex as firm and Southampton as insurance. But obviously depends what offers he receives.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 11/12/2021 09:14

Fantastic updating, as always, singing.

Now that DD’s application has gone in, I can confirm her final choices :

Birmingham - English and film
Southampton - English and film
Reading - English, film and theatre
RH - liberal arts
KCL - English with film

Delphigirl · 11/12/2021 10:09

Those sound like really great choices @Alsoplayspiccolo. I think she would have a great experience at any of those. Fingers crossed the offers start rolling in.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 11/12/2021 10:27

Thanks, Delphi.
It’s been a slog - she really didn’t want to lose theatre, and Reading is the only uni to offer that combination, but we discussed that it might be easier to keep theatre going as an extra-curricular than film.
Liberal arts would allow her to pick modules for all 3 subjects, so another good compromise.

Her top choice is actually Birmingham, but she hasn’t visited the campus. She went to an open day at Southampton and really liked it, so an offer there would be wonderful.

It all feels a bit more real now.

Seeline · 11/12/2021 10:34

Sorry @Zebracat - not quite sure what you mean here 😁

singingstones · 11/12/2021 10:38

I think Zebra's post was for me!
Thanks for the updates, I will keep them up my sleeve and post again early in the new thread.
Fingers crossed for at least one pre Christmas offer for the stragglers!

ealingwestmum · 11/12/2021 10:51

Routing for some offers to come in for you next week Piccolo and ican

ealingwestmum · 11/12/2021 10:52

Rooting even 🙄

collywobble · 11/12/2021 11:10

We've just had another offer through for Leeds to study Economic History. It's local to us so would be DS first choice but after his most recent mocks it could be tricky as it's AAA although reduced to AAB if he achieves an in EPQ. So more of a aspirational choice now possibly. Maybe it will give him some much needed focus ?

Monkey2001 · 11/12/2021 11:47

Thanks for the excellent list @singingstones

Fingers crossed that all goes smoothly now that the excessively stressful application process is over @Alsoplayspiccolo

@collywobble hope the offer from top choice gets DS motivated. It can really help, my DSs both like specific targets to aim for.

The poor medics will probably be waiting until March or April before they know whether they have any offers, DS1 had all his by the end of Feb half term, but they seem to have got slower with Covid. I have seen several people on TSR with excellent stats getting pre-interview rejections, so we just have to be grateful for the interviews for now.

Fruitygal · 11/12/2021 12:22

Congratulations to everyone!! Interviews, forms in and offers x

@Nard75 You’ll get a confirmation of receiving application from most unis in 48hrs apart from the odd place like Exeter etc that are super slow. Then you hear about offers ( hopefully no rejections but if you do get a rejection in the first 14 days you can apply for another uni).

As an offer comes in UCAS will be updated and then the student gets an email to tell them something has changed and prompting them to look on ucas for the detail.

Do not accept or decline ANY offers until you have them ALL in AND if possible you have visited a couple for an offer day. You will hear about offer days from the uni. A couple of days after the ucas offer is shown on the web site the uni tend to email the student and ask them to set up an account snd book an offer day.

The offer day is sampling a day in the department etc the DCs get a real feel for the place and I would recommend for their top 2-3 choices.

Wheresthebeach · 11/12/2021 12:37

Thanks singing, and congrats colly nice to have an offer.

Fiddlersgreen · 11/12/2021 12:45

DS is still telling me he hasn’t seen anything about offer days from any of his.
He has Bournemouth, Brighton and Cardiff, does any one know if they are doing offer holder days?

Fruitygal · 11/12/2021 12:53

@Fiddlersgreen offer days are currently on but some unis offering virtual but pretty pointless - the kids need to get a f2f feel for the unis. Who knows with the current situation Re covid whether they will be cancelled?

I got kids to forward their uni emails to me after the accommodation cock up of DS2. Sometimes the offer days are only seen once they have set up their uni accounts using the info in their emails. 3/4 offers so far have offer days we’ve booked on two of them. Only one mentioned them in the email the rest were only once you set up a profile. The DCs often skim read and miss the set up or think they’ll do it later
