I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@20newnames Very nice result! DS referenced a STEM open lecture he attended at Lincoln in his PS. Strong links to industry were name dropped.

EwwSprouts · 07/12/2021 17:34

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail Ooh exciting!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 07/12/2021 17:36

She started jumping up and down and the dog got excited and started spinning and barking Confused

Anyway bit of anti-climax as Sussex..who she had hoped for insurance (and have written to say lowering their offers to covid cohort) have offered ABB, BBb if firmed. Southampton is her top choice and have a grade range of ABB to BBB..thanks to @Decorhate we know they have a good spread of grades, just got to get through interview.

Fab news @20newnames Lincoln seems so up and coming !

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/12/2021 17:43

Congratulations, Orange! Is that her first offer?

20newnames · 07/12/2021 17:45

Thanks all.

Eww Yes, Lincoln's engineering dept was set up in conjunction with Siemens which was a big attraction to DH in particular as he said they really knew what industry wanted (he is an engineer).

Great news about the offer @OrangeCinnamonCocktail but a bit frustrating that it is the same as her top choice.

AnneOfCleavage · 07/12/2021 17:45

Great news 20newnames and Orange on the offers. Happy Christmas indeed.

3 mocks in 2 days down and going okay so far. Hope it continues. Her hand is really aching as both days have been all essay based mocks with exams lasting 2.5hrs for one paper.

Cooking all her favourite meals this week to make it a bit better. Weather is foul so also dropping off and picking up so made it for work by a whisker this morning as weather made the traffic slower.

BlueMarigold · 07/12/2021 17:58

Congratulations @20newnames and @OrangeCinnamonCocktail!

Oblomov21 · 07/12/2021 18:03

Congrats Orange.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 07/12/2021 18:07

@Alsoplayspiccolo

Congratulations, Orange! Is that her first offer?
Yes....Form was finally submitted last week. Expecting a lower offer from Surrey who are being vague about interviews/audition but have made a clear statement regarding the grades required BBC Dd not sure it is place she will be happy though.

RHU don't interview so will see what they come back with, suspect it will be ABB you probably know they are well respected Musicology wise.

Cardiff and Southampton will definitely interview and audition. Eeek.

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail great to have an offer, even if it does not look like one which will be used. Wasn't top choice Cardiff? We have a friend doing music at Cardiff uni and they were super flexible on results day. If you look at discoveryuni, for music 20% had 96-111 points, which could be CCC for 96 plus extra for music grades.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 07/12/2021 18:36

Thank you @Monkey2001, Cardiff was tops for a long time, but Dd anxiety has got the better of her. She is not sure she could be that far. Luckily the Southampton course is really good too, she likes the city and it is v near home. Cardiff looked so good for her/so much fun.

So Southampton now top. Cardiff and then Sussex next two faves.

@20newnames one of ds's friends has an unconditional from Lincoln too, I don't know what subject though.

Ds has a meeting after school with head of 6th form tomorrow, to go over his ucas stuff. Let's hope it's ready to go.

I know he won't let me read his PS. So no chance I'll have a say in what goes in it.

Finger's crossed for the quick Sussex offer for DS @icanbewhatiwant

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail thanks. Sending it off will be a start! Not sure if it's being sent tomorrow. I've not been asked to pay...but I can't remember paying when ds1's was sent his off.

ealingwestmum · 07/12/2021 19:48

Good to read about Sussex Orange (and, your DD’s lovely reaction)!

crazycrofter · 07/12/2021 20:03

Great news @OrangeCinnamonCocktail! Dd said mournfully earlier ‘I just want a uni offer’… I almost replied that she should have got her form in earlier then!

Glad the mocks are going well @AnneOfCleavage. Dd has had 2, both seem to have gone ok. Ds is also doing GCSE mocks this week; he had the day off today. At 6.30 he rang me on my way back from work to pick him up from the gym. I asked how much revision he’d done before the gym - he said 1 hour Shock and was put out that I wasn’t impressed!

Oblomov21 · 07/12/2021 20:17

Ds got report and mock results. 3 x B. I'm not entirely thrilled. A*AA predicted. Teachers all said they gave them hard papers to shock them, and nearly all students ran out of time, so they are working on time management majorly.

Oblomov21 · 07/12/2021 20:25

I wouldn't care about the 3x B normally, in normal years, because I'm quite a fan of the shock hard mock (because I did worry that ds was becoming complacent and cocky). But I'm now concerned because if exams don't go ahead, and they look at mocks more heavily (we also have February mocks) then I'll then wish teachers hadn't gone for such a shock mock.

Oblomov21 · 07/12/2021 20:28

I mean, I refer to Horace and Monkey's earlier posts re the discussion for 22 exams:

"Feel like whatever they do, some kids will be unfairly disadvantaged. What a mess."

Although he got his sociology highest mark, of the class, almost full marks, in crime. More to do with Piggy help and links ❤️ (thank you) and teaching himself, than the crap new teacher, Me thinks.

If it was a 'shock mock' would they standardise against rest of class. I think I know what I'm saying...it is probably not coming across...

Yeah that feels particularly unfair this year. It isnt like the teachers dont know that using those grades is a possibility.
